1600 K - OIL CONSUMPTION FROM NEW?

Recommended Posts

How much oil should my engine be drinking? I have 1000 miles (600 last week) on the clock and a brand new Roadsport 1600 K. Having just had the 500 service I pressume I have Comma 0-50 fully synthetic in the wet sump.

I even got Milwood to show me how to read the dip-stick but still do not trust myself *confused* and do not want to over-fill it.

I did 300 miles in a daytrip to Markey Harbrough from Bristol, most of which was at about 4000 to 5000 rpm 😬

And another thing - is Mobil 1 0-50 the same stuff and can I top up an engine with Comma in it 🤔 Only I can get mobil 1 anywhere.....

Grateful for advice please *thumbup*

I don't know about how much it "should" be drinking, but my SV with a 1.8 K is not using any oil between oil changes at 5300 miles in 8 weeks of pretty spirited driving.

I must admit and agree with you that the dipstick is not the easiest thing to read when checking the oil level "hot-and-running", as recommended. A quick stab and withdrawl (Ooer!) and the right lighting usually gives satisfactory results, but I do it several times to make sure I'm getting a good average reading.

All the recommendations I've seen from "knowledgable" sources suggest that it's better to stick to the exact same oil for topping-up as is in the sump - both viscosity/grade and manufacturer.

Hope this helps 😬

It'll use some when VERY new, but generaly Ks don't seem to use any.

If you're well past the 500 mile mark and using oil I'd get it checked under warranty.

If you overfill (unless it massively overfilled) the symptom will be high oil temperatures at sustained high revs. if its underfilled the oil pressure will plummet in corners.

Check it as they recommended every 100 miles or so until you're happy it doesn't use any.

DrivRich,

I posted queries about compatible oil not so long ago - the answer I was given was that Halfrauds fully synthetic is *identical* to the Comma (I've found this referred to on other sites too). So I bought some and topped up with that (not having an obvious Comma dealer nearby).

I'd check the 0W50 though - I thought the std in a 1.6k (like mine) was 5W40...

Here is a link to my previous thread..here

Thanks Everyone *thumbup*

I checked the manual for my ROADSPORT:

For 16 v engines = 0W50

For Performance and Track driving = 5W40

I was kind of thinking that as I am not doing any track work this year, I would be 0W50. More protection when cold and I do not spend sustained time at high revs. I tend to use most of them on the accelerate but cruise at 4000rpm.

Checked the receipt from the 500 Mile service which notes SYNER G was used. Checked the Comma website and found that G is 5W40.

So I will stick to 5W40 for any top up which may be required.

On another note - the service receipt says 4 litres of oil 🤔 I am sure I put more than that in when I built her *confused*

DrivRich,

Millwood include 4 litres in their std. service - and then charge for any additional top-ups. I've got an appollo tank - so was charged for an extra '2 litres' - although I believe the total oil cap for such an installation is 7.5 *confused*

I did top up after their service - after using the hot-running check method - but the extra that I needed was tiny.

Dave. Regards your oil consumption. Mine is a 1.8K 140bhp (9 months old and 8k miles under its belt) from new mine has used oil. To start with about 1/2 a litre every 400-500 miles.(Ouch!!) However this has now tailed off, as the engine is bedding in. I rang rover technical UK and they state that my engines acceptible oil consumption is "1/2 a litre every 850 miles, after it has covered 2500miles".(Bearing in mind mine is a 1.8 not 1.6-yours may differ). In short from enquiries on blat chat, some burn oil, some don't. Also rang Roger King Engines,(seven guru), and he also stated some do some don't. My oil consumption is now within manufacturers limits, about 400 ml per 1200 miles at last count, however Caterham state that the K's should not really burn any, and if it continues by the end of the year they will have it in under warranty.

In short do not be alarmed if it burns oil to begin with, but as already advised by Hoopy, I strongly recommend you check after every long blat to monitor it. Keep a record of the levels , and you can see if consumption is getting better or worse. If it still uses some after about 6-9k miles let Caterham know, and they can help under warrant if applicable.

Hope this helps a little .Cheers Rob
