    cooling

Could be too much coolant in the system, giving no room for expansion.
  2. Thw wings are marked with a black spot of indelable ink, rubs off with Tcut. Glue wings on with Gripfill or small strips of glass fibre.
  3. Complete scuttle £110 plus vat from Caterham plus another £100 if you want it painted. Don`t think you can get them from anyone else.
  4. Its not necessary to remove the fuel tank merely loosen the boot floor to gan access to the fuel tank fixing clamp bolts, slacken off or remove these the tank can then be lifted away from the rear skin giving you plenty of room to refit the light. Taking the tank out is hard work , bootfloor out . roll over bar off, seat belts off on it goes.
  5. If the system is properly fitted it should not leak oil at all. Common problem is a protruding boss on the engine block that fouls the inner union this prevents the sandwich plate from seating squarely. I had to dress this unused boss with a file.
  6. If the CF wings are unpainted they seem to stand up well so no need to fit protectors IMO.
  7. Cracking exhaust ports, haven`t heard of this problem could you elaborate Bob please.
  8. Steve, Its worth knowing that if you fix the brake peddle when pushed fully forward the master cylinder won`t drain. I remove the peddle box top and tie wrap the brake peddle when fully depressed.
  9. Its easier to tighten the unions onto the sandwich plate before fixing it in position. I would worry about mounting the tank brackets with tie wraps, if it comes loose its bye bye engine. I don`t share your concerns about corrosion of the chassis when drilling to mount the tank brackets properly with pop rivets as this method of fixing is used throughout the car.
  10. John, When contemplating fitting a steel oil gallery and non-stretch bolts it should be born in mind that the engine was machined as a sandwich with the cast ali oil gallery which as we know allows the whole block to distort when the torque is removed from the stretch bolts. Replacing these components will certainly effect how the engine distorts . Its possible that this could lead to main bearing problems. The stretch bolts also allow for blocks expansion/contraction and maintain roughly the same torque, fitting stronger non-stretch bolts will effect the clamping force on the whole block/head sandwich. Its anyones guess what the longterm effects might be.

Sounds like you have worn syncro rings or you are using the wrong oil. A GL4 spec oil works best.
  12. Emerald M3d k is plug compatable, easy to use and costs £600 inc vat. This price includes coms lead, software and user manual. The big thing in favour of the M3D is that Emerald thats Dave Walker and Karl Paton are experts at mapping the K series having mapped over 500 K`s. Tel 020 7737 7114.
  13. Its possible to push down the wiper pillars below the scuttle and get away without removing the wiper /mech but the washer jet will have to be removed as the aero screen should be positioned 75-80 from the front of the scutttle and that over the top of the wiper pillars and washer jet. You also need the hole as one of the fixing points.
  14. Andrew. I am in the process of fitting one of these screens. Yes it is possible to fit the screen using the existing holes as used for the full wind screen. The two wiper holes, screen wash jet hole and holes for the heated screen wires can all be used as fixings. To use the heated screen wire holes its necessary to extend the bottom return lip of the aeroscreen by 20mm. You could use some glass fibre, CF or bond some small pieces of alli to extend the return.
  15. I have just fitted a pair of the 5 1/4" from Stafford Vehicle Components, I am very pleased with the quality and can confirm that they are exactly the same as the ones supplied by W******D. Having returned the W*******D because they cost £50 extra. I beleive they also supply Caterham with the 7" units. SVC telephone number is 01827 67714.
  16. Don`t know why anyone bothers with a linkage when fitting jenvey D2HTBs to a K series, all you need is a stay plate bolted onto the side of the head and you have a perfect throttle weight and the ratio remains the same as the Rover which is spot on and this will save you about £80. Its also lighter and has less to go wrong. If ever there was a case for DIY this is it . Edited by - Rob walker on 18 Jan 2002 20:48:58

    Dry sump

Johnty, If you don`t run with a heater or could do without one then mount the tank directly above the gearbox within the transission tunnel sort of halfway through the tray infront of the front bulkhead/scuttle. Alex Wong has this installation. It necessitates cutting a 9" hole in the tray and having a tank mounting plate welding on the tank half way up its height. Very neat when done.

Oily, I recently measured all the oil retained within the head after running the car and quickly removing the cam cover. 750 ml of oil was removed using a syringe . This represents about 12% 0f my oil capacity, obviously the retention will be greater when the engine is running and at higher revs.
  19. Gripfill. Made by laybond available at most builders merchants
  20. I believe the problem with the Jenvey linkage is that it gives too much peddle travel the leverage/ratio is wrong for the seven. This makes it hard to Heel toe with this linkage.

    Dry sump

Pied Piper, your posting makes sense and is a possible explaination for my oil leak. I had trouble getting my head round why the seal should be distorted whilst running because the seal will be pressurized by the oil pump to whatever is normal oil pressure. The problem must occur the moment the engine is switch off and oil pressure will imediately decay allowing any remaining vacuum within the engine to pull the seal in or away from the crank surface. Then after a few days as the sump pan fills we have a small oil weep. I shall release my cam cover oil filler cap and allow air into the engine before switching off and see if the problem goes.

No Rob the Pace Pump is mounted in virtually the same place as the Caterham . On a modified engine mount off side. Andy, doubt you could use the Caterham bell tank with the Pace sump pan as the Caterham Bell tank is clamped/bolted through the sump pan. It is possible to remove the oil pump internals from the stock K oil pump with the engine in the car. The point is this requires some fairly technical spannering which may be beyond some peoples abilities.

Peter, Running the system sealed is a bad idea, I don`t do this any more. Would you like to elaborate Peter. I have been plagued by a small oil leak from the area at the rear of the engine and suspect the crankshaft rear oil seal is been distorted by running sealed. This small leak occurs after the car has been stood for a few days and some of the tank oil has drained into the sump. I have resealed the sump pan three times but to no avail and now suspect this seal.
