  1. The discs are Caterham specific made by ALcon. I had a similar problem with runnot and the discs were exchanged under warrenty by Caterham the problem was eventually traced to the hubs. My advise would be to put a rear disc on the front hub and check runnout with a DTi if the runnout is still present look at the hubs and bearings before condeming the discs.
  2. Simon I second what Dave has posted my two units have both behaved that way.
  3. Graham, All 96 onwards had 2.25 rear progressive/ dual rate rear springs irrespective of the adjustable platforms.
  4. Anyone gone through SVA and passed with the Caterham uprated rear brake set up. Thats 2 pot AP calipers, and the separate Airheart hand brake calipers. Any feed back would be appreciated Rob
  5. My Focus has done 82K and I have noticed the dampers are getting shot, any small pot hole or bump is felt and the car skips at the rear. Is this similar to your problem?
  6. Chris, You have first shot, I have e-mail you my address etc. Cheers rob
  7. I received my new kit yesterday complete with a Banner Battery. As I plan to fit a lightweight competition battery the Banner is surplus to requirements. For sale at £40 a good saving on the new Caterham price. Could deliver to Llandow on the 27th March. Tel 0117 9239941. Rob
  8. Elin you are a clever clogs, go to the top of the class, I have also done tham on my own using tie wraps to hold the joint under compression but its easier with two pairs of hands.
  9. I have not seen the stretchy replacement type but have seen the split gaitor kits that you glue to gether. I was not impressed the rubber was very hard and I could only envisage problems sticking the two halves of the gaitor together with all that graphite grease around. I have raplaced several gaitors with the pukka Ford part, its messy and you need a 3 legged pulley drawer to get the tripod joint off the end of the driveshaft and a helper to hold the joint against the spring pressure whilst you swage over the steel shroud. Yuk!
  10. 45 lbft for the live axle that has 3/8 unf studs the de dion should be 55lbft IIRC. I always coppa slip.
  11. The rear crank seal needs a smear of Automotive silicon ( RTV or similar ) on the face that is pushed against the block.
  12. Rob, When you removed the wiper motor there should have been several black earth wires connected into a 8mm lug that was grounded to the chassis with one of the wiper motor clamp fixing bolts. The earths need to be connected or you will get all sorts of trouble. You can ignore the plug that you disconnected from the wiper motor. Good luck.
  13. Simon, I bought my Hawker from PowerVAmp who are in Weston Super Mare Tel 01934 643000. They sell a Hawker 625A 16AH battery which is used on jet ski`s and as such very rugged , 6.1Kg cost £52 plus vat. I recon it should be big enough for your purpose. Rob
  14. You have no chance at Castle Combe, Thruxton, Goodwood or Bedford with the latest short can. Should be Ok everywhere else.
  15. John I have never heard such a load of old toss in my life. Almost as bad as your Barnby Wheels article. Can`t wait for your article. Are you on commission BTW?
  16. If the gudeon pins are interference fit then you should not be fitting circlips. The gudgeon pin is suposed to be slightly offset and will find its own center IF its been correctly positioned on the rod end.
  17. Graham, I would be interseted in 6 X 4 litres of Mobil 1 Motorsport 15 W 50. It is possible I could pick up the order if the postage turns out to be expensive. Many thanks Rob
  18. Two pot rear calipers with integral mechanical handbrake mechanisms have been around for years I had a set of Bendix calipers on my 1991 Lotus Esprit which worked well. Surely someone can design a more modern product to fit the Caterham. The neatest solution I have seen is that fitted to the Radical SR3 which runs with a separate bespoke mechanical handbrake caliper along with the 4 pots. The only snag they cost £375 for the pair.
  19. Chris I think leaving the pistons pressurised sounds a bit suspect. i would expect the pressure to leak away through the ring gaps after a very short time revealing nothing. When conducting a leakdown test which is similar its usually possible to hear the leakage immediately and pinpoint the cause or simply compare leak down from cylinder to cylinder which should all be the same on a healthy engine.
  20. At the Motorsport show PTP assured me that they had no problems related to head gasket failure EVER on their K competition engines and that standard head gasket is more than up to the job. The reason they offered for this surprising statement is that they always use a vacuum pump to draw out all the air after filling and bleeding the coolant system. I would like any feedback from anyone that has tried this and how they did it. I thought of trying a hand vacuum device such as the Mytivac coupled up to the bleed off line which runs from the head to the expansion bottle, any thoughts?
  21. I am not sure they would even fit the Caterham as the the whole caliper assembley required at least 105mm clearance inboard from the centre line of the disc, I think the protruding handbrake actuation lever may foul the radius arms. Peter T Are you sure? that they were a stored energy device, if thats the case then they will not meet MOT/SVA regs. I Find it hard to accept thet High Spec would have developed a caliper that is of non compliant.
  22. The High Spec rears looked useless to me. The inboard piston that houses the hanbrake mechanism has a flat surface presented to the rear of the pads and is made out of Aluminium, I would be concerned that this will efficiently transmit most of the heat generated by the pad directly into the caliper and the fluid. I quized the guy on the stand who reported that they had not tested them on track to date .
  23. Marius, from my experience the new slave cylinder still fails. It is possible to replace the inner seal but quite tricky, I used rolled thin brass shim to install the inner seal.
  24. I screw a self tapping or wood screw into the cap through the small hole until the screw bottoms and drives the cap off. The cap is then undamaged.

    head gaskets

A bit oil emulsion in the breather bottle is quite normal and does not instantly indicate a failed head gasket neither does a 1500 rpm tick over. The VHPD idles around 1200 normally any increase could just be a stuck IACV. I would removce the IACV and strip and clean it internally, carb cleaner is very effective.
