  1. 225 /40- 18 bridgestone potenza. I was amazed at how difficult the tyre was to get off and fit having such a stiff and small sidewall. The tyre also weighs a ton this will put a lot of strain on the dampers being unsprung weight. The more I look at this `development` the more I think we have lost the plot.
  2. Well its a replacement job £230. I certainly will not fit them next time , just imagine you are up in the highlands of Scotland or some other remote place 100s of miles from a tyre fitter that would have a chance of stocking these poxy RFT`s you would be in real trouble. They are not for me I am afraid. The trouble is most new cars have them as OE and do not even have provision within the boot space to accomadate a get you home wheel or jack and tools to to the job. Sheer madness IMO Rob.
  3. Just noticed that I have a screw embedded in the edge of my NS front tyre on my BMW 3 series, does anyone know if runflat tyres can be repaired? Thanks Rob Edited by - Rob walker on 19 Aug 2008 18:53:44
  4. My chassis was supplied in 2004 as a superlight and has S400 as the 9,10,11 & 12th chassis numbers. Rob Edited by - Rob Walker on 19 Aug 2008 09:18:03
  5. With kit cars that were to be self assembled then if you purchased your complete kit before June 1998 you had 2 years to complete the build and it would still be emissions test excempt. If you were building from secondhand parts then you needed to prove that the engine was manufactured before 1995. As regards factory fully built cars I think it may be 1992 but I am not sure.
  6. Some nice touches there I like the Watts linkage billet bellcranks and ARB drop link mounts, very nice. Did you make them?

  15. Geoff, The pipe fittings are BSP and are either 1/2" or 5/8" simply measure the outside diameter ot the threaded boss to determine which. Merling sell the fittings, and for what its worth I wouldn`t use push on pipe fittings on my car. Suggest you cut your old fittings off and get Merlin to swage your old fittings onto some new pipe. BE SURE TO WASH OUT THE PIPES BEFORE USE, as there will swarf from cutting the braiding within the pipes. Rob
  16. Tim, The only sure way of finding out what static side loading you have is to withdraw the drivshaft and remove the hubcarrier and assemble the whole lot on the bench or held in the vice. It is possible that you have some bearings that have been machine out of tolerance or damage to either your hub carrier or drive flange. Rob Rob
  17. Cagey & Tim, You are both failing to understand how the rear hub bearings are loaded . The 200lbs torque as applied to the hub nut on the end of the driveshaft is only applied to the drive flange which is used to clamp the the bearing inner races together against the step machined on the drive shaft. It is not applied to the taper roller bearings which are contained within the hub carrier. There should be little or no static side thrust applied by the torque applied by the hub nut or they will fail in minutes. The taper roller bearings rely on the 5mm machined step within the hub carrier for location of the outer races. The overall width of the two complete bearings and step is 35mm which and this is accomadated within the space that is machined on the driveshaft. I am not a fan of this bit of engineering as there is no provision for correctly adjusting the amount of static side thrust that each wheel bearing sees. I had a total failure on track at Le Mans 2 weeks ago when the NS bearings broke up completely and also cracked my disc. Rob Edited by - Rob Walker on 18 Jul 2008 18:55:44
  18. Now waken up Cagey, Tim is having problems with the rear hub bearings. These are not adjustable unforunately 😬
  19. You should not be able to feel any play in the wheel bearings. You need to find out why you have play.
  20. Small round Fiat Coupe side repeaters installed into the headlight bowls is by far the neatest solution and is SVA compliant.
  21. I am told that Jason is now working at Janspeed in Wilts.
  22. When removing the head its all too easy to get a small amount of coolant leaked down the head bolt holes. This may be your problem, drain out your oil and refill and see if the problem returns before whipping the head off again.
  23. My car does this and was traced to the scuttle rubbing against the top of the dash tube. If you skirt some WD 40 in the area where the scuttle and dash curve it should stop creaking. You could also slacken off the two nuts that hold the scuttle down or fit a full roll cage this stops the chassis flexing 😬
  24. Roger, Do you use ss wool with your long strand eglass or just the eglass on its lonesome ??? I am now wondering if the ss wool is necessary ??? See you a Le Mans Rob
