  9. Classic old Mini problem, battery in the boot, starter in the front, crappy connections accross the subframes and body, as Tom says try to take direct connection from battery earth to Engine block, needs to be chunky jump lead type cable, first thing I always used to do in my yoof, run direct eath cable to Block on minis. Re temp, its all additive, battery gets cold overnight, cables colder, engine colder, it might not be earthing but for sure its the first thing to verify. Could try a quick visual, look for a braided flat copper strap somewhere around the engine steady, going from Block to Bulkhead, quite often go greenish, corroded or just plain snap, if you don't want to run a cable all the way from battery you can try replacing the braid with a couple of new ones from block to bulkhead (running from different places) one of the dangers if the earths are dodgy is everything can earth back through accelerator cable and things start getting hot . 11. Not convinced about carbon Tet in a garden spray in an enclosed space, now I am not one to worry about many H & S rules but, from Wiki, just for simplicity, Exposure to high concentrations of carbon tetrachloride (including vapor) can affect the central nervous system, degenerate the liver[10] and kidneys[12] and may result (after prolonged exposure) in coma and even death.[13] Chronic exposure to carbon tetrachloride can cause liver[14][15] and kidney damage and could result in cancer.[16] More information can be found in Material safety data sheets.[17] maybe this article on waterless car wash products will help Tim Edited by - tbird on 19 Jan 2013 21:26:35
  12. the rear two hex bolts holding seats to runners may not be obvious, they hide under the leather at the bottom of the seat back, thought about using a leather punch to facilitate re fitting as you have to force the leather back with the hex key as trying to locate bolt in thread, makes it very easy to cross thread, you will want plenty of copper slip for re fitting. 13. S3 or SV Nigel, Just looked up 76250 S3 Not for me thanks Tim Edited by - tbird on 14 Jan 2013 18:43:19
  14. Car has been fine until this attempt, started every time without the need for any throttle - and it has a isolator switch which I assume leaves some current to the ecu & immobiliser Paul No, if isolator switch is wired correctly it should disconnect everything, My car can sit for weeks, even months with the FIA switch removed and battery is fine Tim

    Advice on POR 15

Do as they say and decant small amounts of POR15 into a second container and reseal the tin, don't work straight from tin, before you put the lid back on tin put 2 or 3 layers of clingfilm between lid and tin or you will struggle to open the tin again once it dries it is a very effective glue 😬 Tim
  16. My Technical head says it wouldn't be a problem, most have short cct protection of some sort so even if it did try to draw loads of current it would probably be OK, but I still would,t do it. probably be more worried about spikes than actual current Are you actually suggesting you start up with conditioner powered up or switched off at mains, I might risk it with it powered off. Think if I thought taking bonnet of was that much faff I would wire up an accessable auxiliary socket in the cockpit. Tim
  17. Could the brushes need cleaning 🤔 , probably not too easy to test but can you rig a multimeter to check battery voltage under load, I guess you have check electrolyte levels and usual stuff like cleaning battery connectors you say full charge, have you any measurements for off and on load voltages at battery Tim Edited by - tbird on 2 Jan 2013 17:27:35
  18. another for Eneloops, very low self discharge, you can keep a charged set in a box for months and they will still give usable service, I use theses 7day shop often have deals on them but can't see any at the moment. Tim Edited by - tbird on 29 Dec 2012 16:19:46

  22. Now tell the truth Jonty, you'r just after "Best Technical Advice contribution - Blatchat (Tech Talk)" Award Tim
  23. you may have done this, but don't forget to be as scrupulous about checking/cleaning up the earth path as well, the current needs to be able to go as fast as it comes 😳 as it were 😬 Tim Edited by - tbird on 25 Oct 2012 00:27:29
