  5. There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding surrounding Laminova's from the number of posts in the last couple of weeks. As above a Laminova is an oil/water heat exchanger. If the oil is at a lower temperature than the coolant then the oil will be heated. If the oil is at a higher temperature than the coolant then the oil will be cooled - it's that simple. In a Caterham, coolant is typically kept between 80 and 90 degrees by the thermostat opening and allowing the coolant into the radiator (an air/water heat exchanger) where it is cooled by the air passing through it. With a Laminova fitted, when the oil gets hotter than the coolant (as will occur on track or on a high speed blat) the oil is cooled in the Laminova to close to the coolant temperature - the heat exchange capability of the Laminova will determine how quickly. The size of the heat exchanger is important as it must have the capacity to exchange heat between the two fluids at a rate greater than the heat is being pumped into the hotter of the two. Equally the car radiator must be of sufficient capacity to remove heat from the coolant that is now absorbing extra heat from the oil. So if you get the Laminova sized correctly and have a radiator of sufficient capacity, it is a very good set up. I believe that the main problem with fitting an air/oil heat exchanger (a normal oil cooler) in a Caterham is finding somewhere to site it where it gets sufficient airflow without blocking the flow to the radiator.   9. Why not leave the poppers there and add double sided poppers to the aeroscreen? The trim that goes between the aero and the scuttle is enough to more or less fill the gap that will be caused by the poppers. Yellow SL #32

  12. Fine for no number plate is, I believe, normally £30 and no points. One other thing to think about is that a number of the speedcamera databases have regular mobile site locations on them giving you the chance to drive a bit more carefully and/or keep your eyes peeled. Yellow SL #32
  13. Radar and laser detectors are likely to soon become illegal see here about half way down. The bill failed last year but has been reintroduced. GPS based systems will still be legal. On that basis better to get one of those. I have a NavMan sat nav onto which I download the Pocket GPS World database so that is another alternative (TomTom, etc. all have the same facility).   14. Just checked the Palmersport website and the drive by is nominally measured at a distance of 20m with the car under full acceleration from 60mph. If you are near to Bedford, you can go there for a free noise check. Yellow SL #32
  15. 101db static is usually done by holding the noise meter 0.5 metres from the exhaust at an angle of 45 degrees to the tailpipe and then holding 3/4 of your maximum revs. The driveby I doubt you are going to be able to replicate - depends on distance from the meter, throttle opening, ambient conditions, which side your exhaust pipe is on, whether your induction is louder than your exhaust, etc. If you are borderline on the static test then there's probably a good chance of failing the drive by.   21. Oil temperature can rise quite high on a long high speed journey (e.g. motorway) but trackdays will almost certainly cause high oil temperatures. GJT - your engine builder is wrong. Oil temperatures can rise much higher than water temperatures as there is no cooling of the oil as standard - I have seen 115 degrees oil temp on track (Stack dash so fairly accurate). The apollo + laminova + Radtec combination does a very effective job of taming this. The important thing when using an oil/water cooler is that the radiator is up to the job of dumping the extra heat from the oil. A lower rated stat is not really necessary but I'd probably go for an 82 degree one anyway. Yellow SL #32

  23. I had a similar problem with by Bernard Scouse airbox. The solution for me was to put 3 washers under the driver's side engine mount to raise the engine a little on that side. This might work for you although by the sounds of Myles' problems it is then possible the plenum will foul the bonnet. Yellow SL #32
