  2. That looks like them - you need a LH and RH one (they are different). They make life much easier. Yellow SL #32

    New to Sprinting

If you can come to Curborough this weekend then that will give you the best possible chance to see what it is all about. Your car will most likely fall into class 2 or 3 depending on the tyres you have fitted (Avon CR500, Yoko A021R/A032R/A048R, Toyo R888 = class 3 and most normal car tyres = class 2). This year's regulations are here. There might even be some places available for Curborough - no point in putting it off 😬. You will need to apply for a Non-Race National B licence from the MSA. You then just need an approved race suit and helmet - details in the blue book you receive with your licence. There are a couple of minor mods to the car (and I mean really minor like a bit of yellow tape around the earth lead!). You need an FIA rollbar to take part in club events (this is not required for other series but is a sensible precaution). Yellow SL #32 Edited by - Shaun_E on 17 May 2007 08:58:22
  4. Why do you think there will be a problem with 8" rims? These are a standard Caterham size and in fact the MB mag wheels are 8.5". There could be problems with the offset of course but if you search through techtalk, you'll find the offset of the Caterham wheels and can purchase wheels to the correct offset. The only other problem is that the latest Caterham 8 spokes won't fit around earlier de-dion tubes but 10 minutes with an angle grinder soon sorts that out. Won't it look a bit odd with 15s on the front and 13s on the back? The Caterham 13" 8 spokes look great, can be had in anthracite, black of silver and will fit. Tyre size should be 205/60 on 8" rears. 185/60 would be appropriate for 13x6" fronts. Yellow SL #32
  5. Martin - we'll miss you. Gill is still nervous but says she might let me win this weekend 😬. Hopefully see you at Curborough. Yellow SL #32

    Wipers

My old screen was a bit scratched by the wipers. New screen and new blades resolved the problem. If the scratches aren't too bad then you might be able to use glass polish to remove them and then fit new wiper blades. I now use Rain X on my screen all the time and the wipers hardly ever need to be used. Yellow SL #32
  7. Simon - we probably won't stop as we want to get there in daylight and get the tents up. If weather/timing/hunger change our plans then I'll let you know. Yellow SL #32
  8. Standard R400 fitment is 195/45R15, optional are 205/45R13 rears. CSR is 255/40R15 on 9" wide rims. I guess you could buy some other wheels (Compomotive CXRs for example) in 9" with the correct offset and fit the CSR tyres. Alternatively you could try the 215/50R13 Kumho on an 8" wide wheel (class 3 and 5 sprint competitors are using this tye now). They do a 235 section one which will also fit on an 8" rim. Powerful K's

If you use second hand parts (block, VVC/MS2 head, crank, single tang rods) you could probably get a 230bhp engine for £6000-£7000. My 227bhp unit set me back around £6500. Specification is Scholar 1.9 EVO2 block, 82mm Pistal forged pistons, DVA ported VVC head (std VVC valves), Piper BP285H cams (retains hydraulic lifters), Jenvey DTHTBs, Bernard Scouse airbox, Caterham 4-2-1 exhaust system, Emerald ECU. It uses a standard crank and single tang rods and all reciprocating parts were balanced by Vibration Free. Peak power is just below 8000rpm, peak torque is 167lbft. If you used all brand new parts then you could easily spend over £12k. From my specification you could go to solid lifters and wilder cams which would add a few hundred pounds to the cost but should get you up around 240bhp+, but you might then want to look at steel rods (£850ish?) and even a steel crank. I have been tempted to go solid lifters in the search for more power but I think my engine is a good compromise - valve clearances don't need adjusting, top end refresh is not required and at less than 230bhp it isn't pushing the outer envelope of what the K can take. That said, it will need the slipper design pistons checking at some point - you could use Omega pistons to avoid this requirement. Have a chat with Dave Andrews at DVA Power. N.B. this was a couple of years ago so some prices may well have increased. Yellow SL #32 Edited by - Shaun_E on 9 May 2007 09:07:24

    ZF LSD

Have a chat with Phil at Road and Race Transmissions tel: 01959 525105. Unless you are racing, another type of diff might be more suitable such as Quaife ATB or you might find a second hand AP diff. I also understand that TranX also make a plate type diff similar to the ZF. Yellow SL #32
  11. Have you seen these? Yellow SL #32
  12. We are planning on camping there Saturday night as well. See you there. Yellow SL #32
  13. There are recommendations on Dave Andrews' K series engine page although there may be more recent experiences available. The Caterham VHPD 4-2-1 system is pretty close to these I think and works very well on my set-up. Yellow SL #32 Edited by - Shaun_E on 24 Apr 2007 15:12:01

    41mm socket

In case anyone else needs to get one, there as an ebay shop "MAX engineering supplies" who sell Sealey and Draper 41mm sockets. I bought a 1/2" drive impact socket for £15 (of which about 1/2 was the postage). Just search ebay for 41mm and they should come up. It arrived very quickly and the seller has good feedback. R500 doors

I saw a pair on ebay yesterday - might be worth a look. But yes you can buy them separately from Caterham - just be sure you are sitting down when you ask how much . Yellow SL #32
  17. If you only want it for the car and don't need a video camera for other things then one of these packages here look pretty good and it the way I would probably go now. I would probably choose the mpeg recorder with the screen just for ease of setting the bullet camera up. Yellow SL #32
  18. Mine is almost identical to the one Paul M has. I got it from Car builder solutions and mounted it on the front of the driver's footwell. It is vented to underneath the footwell to avoid fumes reaching the cockpit. Yellow SL #32

    Insurance

Who are you insured with for road use? If it's Egger Lawson then you should have free trackday cover for up to 4 trackdays. Some of the other insurers might also cover you for a top up fee of about £40/£50 - my policy with Adrian flux allows me to do this and I am pretty sure that Haggerty do as well. I understand that policies with Footman James may cover trackday's as well. If you are with a mainstream insurer then Competition Car Insurance are probably your only option. Yellow SL #32
  20. Better front pads? Or a brake limiting valve in the rear brake circuit. Yellow SL #32
  21. A quick search of the VOSA website came up with the link I was looking for: here. The important bit for us is in the box in the bottom right corner. Yellow SL #32 Edited by - Shaun_E on 13 Apr 2007 11:49:52
  22. Annoyingly VOSA have revamped their website and my link to the definitive document no longer works. Also the site I had a link to that had the MOT manual on it appears not to be working anymore. The best I can come up with is this site. 7FAQ has this. Yellow SL #32
