  1. Uh oh...busted! Better get the de Beers catalogue out again *cry*.

    Clicked on the link - very tempting although I didn't like the phrase "will fit on the existing Caterham cycle wing brackets with some slight modification". Will also need some wider front wheels I think.

    New de-dion is going to be a lot of effort to gain 8mm (4mm each side) - will need new brake pipes as well. Probably cheaper to get some wheels with a different offset.

    I'll just temporarily ditch the rear ARB if the new tyres foul on it. Stiffening the rear damping will probably compensate reasonably.

  2. 235s should arrive today so I'll see if it looks like they will fit.

    Rob G. - are you around this weekend? If the 235s won't fit (and it looks like the 215s will) then I would like to buy yours. Please can you Blatmail me your phone number so I can contact you over the weekend. Thanks.

    Adrian - not sure how the offsets compare between MB and Caterham 8 spoke but it certainly sounds like I might have an issue. I'll see if Caterham have stock of De-Dion tubes - this is going to be one expensive upgrade!

    While I'm at it, if the 235s fit them maybe I should try and fit 215s up front! What is required to do this? I assume I will need new wings but will I need wider wheels (currently 6" Caterham 8 spokes) and will offset be an issue?

    Simon - I guess you have Barnby rims which are 8.5 inch wide. Not sure whether offsets are the same either so I may have issues with the ARB drop link as it comes pretty close to the 205s I have fitted at the moment. I'll just have to try them and see. A new style de-dion tube could be on the cards as I understand that to be a bit wider.

  4. Having spoken to Mark, 175 / 215 combination produces some high speed understeer which is dialled out with stiffer rear damping. I don't think that will be too different to my current set up (185/205 Toyos). I am told that 215 vs 235 is actually only 10mm difference in width so maybe won't be too much of a problem. My biggest concern is having the tyres foul the drop links on my rear ARB - this might still be a problem with the 215s.

    However - if Rob Grigsby doesn't get back to me then yes please Lynda if you are selling them.

    Rob M - thanks. I have ordered the 235s but if they are no good and I can't get 215s from either Rob or Lynda in time then I will take you up on your offer.

  5. Trying to get 175 front and 215 rear but no 215 available in soft. There are 235 available in soft but will this cause me any problems? Would it make the car unbalanced (rear overtyred) or are there any likely issues with fouling - wings or ARB -using standard 8" Caterham 8 spoke wheels?

    I understand there isn't much difference in overall width between the 215 and 235 but I don't want to end up with loads of understeer.

  6. 5w50 would be fine as would 0w40 or 5w40. It doesn't really matter, just use a fully synthetic oil such as Mobil 1 or Silkolene.

    Having said that, I use Halfords motorsport oil (5w50) which is alledgedly the same as the Caterham branded one.

  7. What a brilliant weekend!

    I was very pleased with my progress - I seem to have made a bit of leap forward: nearly 4 seconds off my previous best at Llandow and my Llys y Fran time was much closer to the class leaders (and 8 seconds quicker than last year although that was of course a wet time). To win a trophy was icing on the cake - sorry I wasn't there to collect it but we had a 4 hour journey ahead of us and wanted to get home at a reasonable time. I'm really proud of Gill - she knocked about 16 seconds off last year's Llys y Fran time and nearly 10 seconds off her Llandow time.

    I made another attempt at the Blonde Wig award on Saturday when I forgot to check the wheel nuts between runs and nearly lost a rear wheel *eek* despite Gill telling me that something wasn't right with it *redface*! Thank you to whoever told the commentator about that *wavey* for him announce over the tannoy.

    Thumbs up to Julie for getting totally hooked after Llandow, securing a late entry to Llys y Fran and then putting in an excellent first run. The leaking sump problems means she has already experienced the extreme highs and lows of this sport that we all love.

  8. Adrian - could you not just remove the sender (top of the tank) and fish it out through that hole? I can't remember how big the hole is but it might be OK. Otherwise drain the tank, remove the pump and fish it out from there - the hole the pump sits in is plenty big enough to get your hand in and there is a gap between that side of the pump and the side of the car. Best to get a new pump gasket and just be very careful when refitting not to distort it but otherwise there shold be no problem sealing it.

  9. I could never get the silicone hose to seal on the submarine pipe even with 3 jubilee clips! I eventually swapped back to the rubber hose. I have now bought some Mikalor hose clamps which should provide a more even clamping force around the hose so I will refit the silicone hose next time I drain the cooling system.

    I have also been told that a small smear of silicone sealant will help matters.

     

    Don't go to Power Engineering as a) they don't hold them in stock and b) they aren't the cheapest. I got mine from http://www.actionsealtite.com/prod-clamps.asp, but there are loads of on-line places that stock them.

  10. Top tip - put gaffer tape over the leading edge of the tonneau and half door. I've been doing this ever since I nearly ran over Tam and Michael's tonneau at Pembrey.

    I watched my Goodwood video last night. Due to the windscreen I couldn't get to max revs in 6th but I did get to nearly 7000 which according to gearcalc is about 130mph *eek*. Yesterday I ordered a pair of perspex aeroscreens!

  14. IME A021Rs don't last very long on a dry track day - they overheat and wear very quickly. I use CR500s for road and track but would probably use R888 medium if I had dedicated track wheels (I use R888 soft compound for sprinting). The other alternative is Kumho Ecsta V70A in medium compound - I have not tried these but most sprinters use them in soft for competion and some have used them in medium for trackdays with good results.

    R888s/Kumhos/A048Rs are fine in the damp/wet - none of them are good in standing water but then IME A021Rs aren't that great in those conditions either.

  15. Any pre August 1998 kit built car is exempt from emissions testing. For factory built car's it will depend on the engine as to whether a CAT is required. Any engine or car that is pre August 1992 will not need a CAT test but will need to pass a basic emissions test (CO here.
