  1. This is just the LSD unit out of my 1997 Superlight (casing and CW&P not included). It's done about 40k miles but was working perfectly when removed from the car. I am selling because I have upgraded to a Titan unit. £250 It's quite heavy so would prefer collection from Slough/Maidenhead but I can have it couriered at cost (probably between £10 and £20). 2. Thanks folks. I am taking my wingstays to Adrians tonight as he is taking some stuff for blasting and powdercoating tomorrow. Yellow SL #32 - member of Drowned Rat Racing

    AVO or Gaz?

Our Class 5 speed championship winner uses Ohlins 2 way adjustables. Nitron do 2 and 3 way adjustables as well, depending on how deep your pockets are. Penske are also well regarded but expensive. The important things for adjustable dampers is that they have repeatable settings and that pairs of dampers actually match. This is where Nitron (and I guess the other more expensive brands) beat the cheaper units. I have heard some horror stories about AVO dampers which is the main reason I chose Nitron. 5. Does anybody know of a good place to get some wingstays blasted and powder coated? Needs to be reasonably close to Slough. Yellow SL #32 - member of Drowned Rat Racing
  6. It is very fiddly to get the angle correct but it does come out the top. If you are really struggling then you could try jacking the rear of the car up and dropping the petrol tank instead(making sure you don't strain any of the connections). That should also give you enough room to rotate the boot floor into a suitable position to get it out. Yellow SL #32 - member of Drowned Rat Racing
  7. You could fit a Laminova oil/water heat exchanger. This will help to warm the oil more quickly (and act as an oil cooler in the summer months). IMO cruising at motorway speed puts little strain on the engine so it is unlikely to be a problem. Yellow SL #32 - member of Drowned Rat Racing
  8. Adrian - I've just switched from Magnecor to a set of Halfords own brand due to the misfires I was getting at Aintree. Part of the problem for me is having a VVC head with distributor (EU2) ignition - the standard K-series Magnecor leads don't fit well as the VVC head is taller than a standard K16. I doubt you will have the same problem but it has put me off using Magnecor. Yellow SL #32 - member of Drowned Rat Racing

  12. I have spoken to Adrian about ally carrier so that looks like a good solution. Cooker cable will get replaced with proper stuff and wiring routed out of harms way but I don't think I will be replacing the loom completely this year. Shiny new RiF wings arrived this morning 🥰 I'm off to drop my gearbox and diff to Phil on Wednesday. Yellow SL #32 - member of Drowned Rat Racing
  13. I spent today taking the car to pieces again - engine, gearbox and diff are now out. The gearbox is going to Road and Race for a refresh and some stronger internals where needed. The diff will also be going there for some new internals - a 3.9 crown wheel and pinion...oh and a Titan LSD 😬. Propshaft will be sent for a refurb a well. My new Image billet ali wheels arrived on Monday and they are now shod in a fresh set of Kumho rubber. Just waiting for the new wider front wings to arrive to complete the set-up. I have a few bits to order from Caterham like a new upper steering column and quick release (to get rid of the play in the steering which has annoyed me for ages), a new CRB (the old one fell apart as i took it out ) and some other bits and pieces. Idiot award goes to the person who tried to remove engine and gearbox without having removed the gear lever first . Looks like the tunnel top will need some TLC and the reversing light switch might need new connections . See you all tomorrow. 14. Brian - yes that makes sense. I hadn't twigged the "use of categories" recommended vs. mandatory bit. I still think that an FIA bar + petty strut will comply but I guess that needs clarification. Cheers. Yellow SL #32 - member of Drowned Rat Racing
  15. I have read the rollover protection section several times now and as I see it there is no change to the requirements. However we may not have been complying to date! The change is to the classes. What is currently "modified production cars" has been split into "modified series production cars" and "modified specialist production cars". In 2008 (and I presume before that) a Caterham on List 1B tyres would have fallen into the "modified production cars" class. From 2009 it will be in the "modified specialist production cars" class. The requirements for rollover protection are the same and further they do not change in 2010. The issue then is to understand the rollover protection requirements in section C© of the blue book - a task that is not easy. My understanding is that it is mandatory for "modified production cars" to comply with points 31-35 OR 36 of section C©. It is also my understanding that an FIA bar with petty strut complies as it is a certified ROPS. So in summary I believe that Caterhams on list 1B tyres should have an FIA bar with petty strut fitted to comply but a full cage is not required and will not be required in 2010 either. For me personally this is an issue but I will find a way to resolve it. I guess we can lobby the MSA to allow list 1B for "Road going series production cars" and "road going specialist production cars". I suspect that will simply draw their attention to the fact we may not currently be complying with the rules. We could introduce a class 4a and class 5a which run on list 1A tyres but I can't see there being much support for them. I guess we will just have to fit petty struts (or cages) for classes 3, 4, 5 and 6. Yellow SL #32 - member of Drowned Rat Racing Edited by - Shaun_E on 21 Nov 2008 10:21:31
  16. Measure the backdepth (distance from hub face to edge of inner rim) - that is the critical measurement. DaveK's values above square with what I measured my Caterham 8 spokes to be (111mm and 139mm respectively). At those you shouldn't be getting any rubbing on the radius arm especially with the new de-dion tube. The radius arms have a hollow on them - is that facing outwards? I've ordered a set of the Carbon Bits ones for to go over a pair of 215 Kumhos. It's going to be tight with the race stays I have but should be fine with normal 13" stays. Yellow SL #32 - member of Drowned Rat Racing
  18. It's not a club event, but the Taffia pre-season shakedown at Llandow is a good place to start. Sessions for the first hour or so before going open pit lane and there are usually a few of the sprinters there. It's a simple track to learn where it goes but challenging to get right - it's also one of the sprint venues so worth it for some practice! Plenty of run off in most places and it tends to be a very relaxed day. Cost is £70 per driver so not prohibitively expensive for 3. Yellow SL #32 - member of Drowned Rat Racing

  20. Caterham 8 spoke wheels 2 off 13" x 6" and 2 off 13" x 8" finished in Matt Black. These are not perfect but they are straight. Pictures are here. One of the 6" wheels has been kerbed see here. Both 8" wheels have some scoring on the inside where I obviously didn't remove enough from the de-dion when I first fitted them. I've described them warts and all, but these are stil a good set of wheels and would set you back well over £500 new. £300 ono. Collection preferred but I can probably sort out delivery. I can also get them to the sprint awards lunch at the end of the month. Yellow SL #32 - member of Drowned Rat Racing

  22. How do you pass an MOT? If the engine is older than the car (and you can prove it) then your MOT emissions are tested to the age of the engine. I have no idea whether that exemption will also be allowed by the MSA. I guess the exact wording won't be known until the 2009 Blue Book is published. The proposed regulations were published in one of this years Motorsport Now magazines but I don't recall if there was any exemption for cars with pre-2000 engines. I suspect this is a situation that hasn't been catered for. Yellow SL #32 - member of Drowned Rat Racing
  23. Hi Ian - looks like class 2 is the one for you. Timing strut, yellow tape for the battery earth lead and a sticker to show how to turn the ignition off are all I can think of for the car - you'll need to read the relevant parts of the Blue Book which comes with your MSA licence to be sure. Race suit and helmet are required, gloves and boots recommended. Helmet needs to be BS6658-85 A or A/FR or Snell 2000/2005. See you in the paddock next year. 24. Top tip - use Rain-X on the windscreen - I rarely have to use the wipers now. Yellow SL #32 - member of Drowned Rat Racing
  25. VVC + roller barrels (or Jenveys)+ std engine mounts = same sump clearance as any other K series. VVC is a good starting point as it has bigger valves than the normal K16 head. Yellow SL #32 - member of Drowned Rat Racing
