  1. You use POR15 on the bare metal/rust. If the area is likley to be exposed to sunlight(UV) much then paint over with Chassis Coat - also available from Frosts - or a paint of your choice. This is because POR15 discolours with exposure to UV.

  2. Mark,

I don't know for sure, but Caterham only offer one dry sump kit for the K-series (there is a separate kit for Vauxhall and another for Crossflow) so I think it is the engine that determines the bell housing rather than the gearbox. This is futher reinforced by the fact that they offer a lightweight ali bellhousing (for wet sump as an upgrade) that is independent of gearbox. I am sure that the Caterham 6 speed is derived from the ford type 9 and therefore they used the same mounting pattern.

  3. The normal Caterham size in Yokohama tyres (A021R, A032R and A048R) is 185/60. When Caterham introduced the Avon CR500 it was in a 175 but the actual width of the tread is similar to a 185 Yoko. So if you want Yoko's then get 185/60 but if you decide to go for Avon CR500 (more expensive) then you will have to get 175/55 as that is the size they come in. I can't think of anyone who runs Yokos narrower than 185.

  4. Clutch will be replaced as will CRB but Paul's comment is the one thing I was wondering. I only thought of it as on the Caterham website they sell the clutch release arm but mark it as "wet sump only".

While I am happy to fit standard items (i.e. the dry sump kit) I am not so keen to start making changes that are not so standard.

Any other thoughts on hydraulic clutch? I was too late to catch Caterham this evening but will phone them tomorrow.

  5. Does the kit from Caterham include absolutely everything required? Are there any other changes required (e.g. to clutch mechanism)?

I will be going to the factory on Friday and before I buy the kit I want to be absolutely sure that it really is a DIY job and that I won't have to make any unexpected changes to the car.

  6. Steve,

Unfortunately I'll be in Holland on 24th. I might be able to make arrangements to leave it at my work (about 1/2 mile from M4 J6) - let me try and sort something out. You can call me on 07736 017315 if there is another way.

  7. Pair of standard 7" Caterham headlamps with Chromed bowls, normal H4 bulb fitting. There is some rust at the bottom of the bowls although hardly visibile when fitted. Pictures here and here. Please note the indicators and mountings are not part of the deal - just the headlights.

    £30 or nearest offer.

Buyer collects from Slough or Penn Sevens or pays postage.

  8. Heated windscreen with Ali surround. Well used, with some pitting and minor scratches. All but one of the heating elements work and there are no significant chips or other major damage so could be rescued with a bit of glass polish.

Picture here. Please note the rubber seal will not be sold with it.

If anyone wants it as a spare or temporary solution or maybe to cut down - £25 or nearest offer.

Buyer collects from Slough or from Penn Sevens. I might even be at Seven Stars this Sunday.

  9. OK cheers.

I've done a search for spark plugs but there seems to be a wide variety of opinion on what to use.

Any recommendations on what spark plugs to use with 1.6 Supersport engine (or what the Caterham standard part is)?

  10. Yes - if it's the yellow coloured socket on a Sony then that is AV in as well as out. The bullet cam actually uses the playback mode rather than the normal record mode.

  11. I want to replace the following items while the engine is out and they seem quite pricey at Caterham - are there other cheaper sources for any or all of these bits?

    Part Caterham price

    spark plugs 41.96

    distributor cap 25.42

    rotor arm 13.99

    coil lead

    fuel filter 13.75

    alternator belt

If so where and does anyone know the part numbers?

  12. Water temp sender is in the water rail but I can't remember which end. Follow the radiator top hose to where it joins a black metal pipe mounted on the engine - this is the water rail - and you should easily find the temp sender near one end of it. Not sure that shorting it will cause a reading as I would have thought that as the temp increase then so does the resistance - shorting will effectively give you zero resistance and therefore a low temp reading.

If fiddling with the wires has an effect than it could be the connections from the sender to the switch that flicks between water and oil temp are what is causing the problem. Probably just need cleaning up or maybe the connectors need re-crimping to the wires.

  13. Pretty sure the answer to this is "no you can't" as there is nothing to locate the axle fore and aft - it would probably put some rather nasty stresses on the drive shafts.

What you need is one of these. Or do what I did and make one - in my case using 4" fence post and some castors from B&Q. I made 2 so that I can wheel the whole car around.

  14. Oliver - they are a bit of a mess! Can't believe I didn't notice that wear when I took the clutch off 😳.

Now - what are peoples' thoughts on the cause of that wear? I assume it is incorrect preload on the CRB so that the CRB is not rotating with the clutch. Guess I'll have to re-read the low flying article before replacing the clutch and ARB.
