Nick - transplant didn't happen last weekend as my mates workshop floor was covered in the bits of his disembowelled MGB V8
- os it's on for this weekend 😬
Ian(Mr Picky
) - there's always someone who asks too many awkward questions - in that firstly I dont have the answer off the top of my head and secondly that I now have to go outside in the rain and find out. You BCJ engineers are all the same 😬 😬

no experience of 48s but after much deliberation about 2 years ago I opted for CR500s (i have 15 in prisoner wheels) and no complaints - performance in wet excellent - in dry can't complain

I've noticed that my CR500s are wearing a bit unevenly - are there any 'standard' settings that I could give to a local tyre fit centreto check for on tracking / toe in/out etc. Mainly for road use with c. 3 track days per year. de dion
Cheers

you know where I'm coming from here - to replace the toob I just tied the whole hub, driveshat etc assembly back with strong wire, taking care where putting the new toob in. It seemed a lot more straight forward than Chelspeeds approach - whole job done in c.2.5hrs including cup of tea stops and moving the car from outside to avoid torrential downpour.
having said that 'changing ears' sounds more painful so maybe the removal of the above items makes life easier

PS engine change delayed until this weekend

😬 😬 😬 😬
all I've got to be is patient and make sure I remember to print this page

thanks as ever guys
got a hoist
planning to remove engine and g/box (already had that tip) -drip tray
header tank not sealed
will need to find space for dry sump tank - I saw where that went on Norm's car - but my battery is in the middle of the bulkhead - air horns on the nearside
Norm I've got your numbers thanks - I'm also grateful that my firend who's helping is a Rolls Royce trained engineer who is about to embark on a complete rebuild of his '72 MGB V8 😬

next weekend I should hopefully be removing my existing xflow and installing Rob Grigsby's motor. Everything I hear from those that know these things says it should be straight forward
Any particular tips anyone can give to help things go smoothly.
Thanks - Rog

You're right it's the stress on the primaries that causes the problem. My friend and I decided after umming and erring that trying to support the exhaust just in front of the silencer box by attaching a bracket of some description to the chassis wasn't going to happen in the time we had.
So we set about making the contraption you see through good old-fashioned trial and error. The clamp going over the top of the primaries is made from two standard 'U' clamps bent back to an angle of 90 degrees. The threads of the clamps go through a bar at the back of the pipes. That steel bar is attached as described to the engine mount.
The car'll be in bits next weekend so I should get some more pics with the clamp off the car. Hope that helps - Rog

Hi Mike
no I'm afraid....I'm not meeting Rob until 22nd to pick it up. But I've already negotiated suitable in a mates workshop so I'll be ready to do the swap hopefully that weekend 😬 😬 😬 😬

.........yep temptation got the better of me
*tongue* 😬 😬........now the fun starts...anyone got a socket set I can borrow 🤔
Sorry Norm (Mr Verona) I know i've gone against your advice concerning swapping engines (no disrespect Rob), but it had to be done.
Upgraditis has been killed............for the time bring

...oh yes and another thing. I had a new flange made for 2 & 3 pipes by CCM. I then used RK copper gaskets and it still blew - it just took longer to give ❗

I'll try and get the pictures sorted out asap.
I'm not sure any gasket will solve the problem - to me it seems to be a fundamental design flaw with the central manifold bolts being across the horizontal and the (unsupported) weight of the primaries and can 'pulling down' on the joint, a gap is bound to appear between the head and primary exhaust flange - hence the need for support from below.
It should be possible to copy mine - the support is made from steel and two U clamps welded together and attached to the lower rear engine mount. Pictures will make it clearer.

I was fortunate enough to spend a few hours with Norm on Sunday 2nd when he was completing the above. Thankfully he can multitask as I was asking basic BDR type questions
The run through sun, rain and hail in my Xflow to Sheffield was fun - but the sound of the Norm's car just in the garage was..well impressive to say the least 😬 😬

Norman just directed me to this posting
Like all the similar posts I became increasingly pi**ed off with replacing c.6 gaskets for cylinders 2 & 3 - never a problem with 1 & 4. I also used the copper type from Roger King and whilst they lasted longer they did not cure the problem.
As Norm points out I kept moaning about the problem to a mate at the regular Friday night drinking and session. Fortunately this friend is an engineer with a well equiped workshop and after about 3 hours trial and error one Saturday afternoon he made a bracket that supports the angled section of the primary pipes.
We decided this was easier (at the time) than trying to fit a support between the frame and the pipe just in front of the silencer.
If anyone's interested I'll take some pictures and put them in a web album for all to see.

agree with previous comments - when I am negotiating with someone - I don't expect to do it in full view of everyone - apart from that I agree with the need for rules

..for a 91 de dion xflow - older, slimmer style leather seats. 2 x headrests needed.
New style do not suit seats
cheers

I went to Oulton Park on 28 June with very loud xflow. the dB limit was 105db. The track official put me down as 104.9 😬 😬 😬
I asked him what the correct reading was later but he said he'd have to shoot me if he told me 😬
My 7 is 13years old and is still on the first silencer - hence the reason why I'm about to purchase a new one from Powerspeed
Rog

Thanks for the info guys
looks like I'll go with Powerspeed. Spoke to Dave down there again today and he says he will take the silencer and the 4-1 collector and fettle that into one piece as well - he seems to think that provides a more robust soluton.
Ian - dont need new dampers 😬 I found out yesterday having talked to Barry at CCM that they sent the wrong de dion tube. They sent me the post '96 de dion and there is a different one for my model year
that's why I'm running ground effect. Made cutting the lawn easy though 😬
Ah well another opportunity to get to know the back of her
..the car

I need a new silencer for my 91 xflow. a mate up here in the Mid-Staffs gang has recommended Powerspeed.
Although I see regular glowing reports on the quality of the Raceco gear - the prices are a bit high for a 13 year old car that only does c. 3-4 track days a year
I've talked to Dave at Powerspeed and he reckons c.£200+vat should sort me a 6.5inch repackable silencer.
No doubt the shy and retiring amongst you willprovide some feedback on these guys or make other suggestions
*tongue*
Cheers Rog
