  1. Race cars without batteries have a quick plug in (male/female) connection for engine starting and this takes much more than 40 amps. I am sure you can search for this. Piers
  2. Yes, the single grub screw was taken out before I unscrewed the gear knob. I'll try some fiber washers tomorrow. It may well have had something inside the knob that fell out, but I did not see anything. Thanks for the information.
  3. I should have added that it is the metal Caterham 6 speed gear knob.
  4. This afternoon I fitted a new leather prop shaft cover to replace the old damaged one. To do this requires the removal of the gear knob that has a small allen screw in it, which I undid. When I removed the gear knob, the six speed gear indications were at 12 o'clock. It was very very tight to undo and I used my wife's kitchen bottle top removal tool to undo it. Now the new cover is in, but when i tighten up the gear knob, it only goes to 10 o'clock. So I am doing something stupidly wrong or was there something in the gear knob to limit it. Not having the gear indications at 12 o'clock looks all wrong.
  5. Correct, K&N do a spray can with oil for air filters.
  6. I have bought a new prop shaft tunnel cover for my R300K. The original tunnel cover was damaged by the Tillet seats cutting into it on both sides. The original Tillet seats were removed some time ago and replaced with leather seats. So, I now want to remove the old tunnel cover and fit the new one. I am assuming that I have to somewhere release the cable on the centrally mounted handbrake lever to get it near vertical and undo any holding screws, before it can be removed. Can someone advise the best way to do this? Do I need to remove the seats and where are the captive screws holding the cover in place?
  7. 18.1 volts from the alternator means the regulator has had it and at that voltage will damage your battery.
  8. Let’s hope it is the sender as they are notorious for failing. About five years ago, my company did some long term diesel engine running tests on oil pressure senders. We found that the cheap Chinese made units were in most cases lasting 20/25 hours and in brief were crap quality. The more expensive VDO German made lasted for the running test that was 1000 hours. Good luck and hope it is the sender.
  9. I think they are called Thackeray washers and there is a specific setting/gap needed, otherwise it airiates the fuel. Piers
  10. So it has been sitting unrun for eight months with twin DCOE Webber’s. Maybe the jets have gummed up with stale fuel. Have you tried cleaning all jets ?
  11. I had an 85 Super Sprint and the rear A frame bushes were replaced every season. I never replaced the others and probably should have.
  12. /sites/default/files/images/users/7956/large_51A5A0DC-7B6F-4911-B5CB-C39A88FCFF16.jpeg I have recently had to replace the smaller rubber pipe breather to the right of the photo, due to a split in the pipe. At the same time, I wanted to replace the main petrol fill rubber connector, as I assume it would got hard with age (it hasn’t yet). The original that I took out was 930 mm (3 5/8”) long. The replacement I got from Chris at Redline was 1180 mm (4 5/8”) long. Fitting the new longer inlet was impossible, due to the metal breather pipe connection on the side of the pipe work. Now I could cut the new one down to size, but both the old and new have a angled section at each end, so if I cut the new rubber pipe, one end won’t have this. Any advice please.

    1.8 K series

    /sites/default/files/images/users/7956/medium_IMG_0039.JPG /sites/default/files/images/users/7956/medium_Connector_0.JPG This is a standard R300 K inlet trumpet.
  14. I too have a 2004 R300 and the clearance is absolutely minimal on the front wing stays. The R300 had 15” wheels as standard fitment and 195/45/15 CR500 tyres. I recently bought some used 15” wheels (Antracite 10 spoke R300 std) and they were fitted with 195/50/15 Yoko tyres and they fouled the wing stays. It is that tight. However, new 195/45/15 CR500 are still available and would make a good touring tyre. Piers
  15. Check to see if you have a spark when cranking. If so, then your ECU May have a bad earth. Taking all precautions, take the air filter off and spray a small amount of fuel in each throttle body. If it fires immediately on cranking, then you have a bad earth. The injectors draw a fair bit of current and a bad earth prevented mine from operating/injecting when cranking. I had this problem on an R300 and if was very difficult and time consuming plus expensive to find the fault. Also check the multi pin connector under the throttle bodies for corrosion. - mine was green. It’s not easy to get undone but persistence is needed. Piers
  16. Sounds a tricky one Simon. I am sure someone will be along soon to point you in the right direction. Hope all well otherwise. regards Piers

    Wipers

Lee. How is the car running now. Have you had a rolling road session yet ? Piers
  18. Having read this post, yesterday at The Shell petrol station near Rye, I was extremely careful to double check I had selected the right fuel. It is too easy to make a mistake if you are in a hurry or tired. Luckily, three of us were out for a Blat to Rye and in no hurry and enjoying the weather.
  19. I have these on my R300K and direct replacement and with no wiring mods. They are louder than the standard horns. i think I had to extend the existing wiring.

    Decat pipe

I used to fit the decat pipe on my R300 after the mot when I first got the car. To be honest, I could not tell the difference or notice and change in sound, so after a few years, I gave up.
  21. John I had this on my R300K a few years ago, after it got a monumental soaking on the way home from Brands Hatch. It came on and then later glowed dimly as it started to dry out. I have assumed that the water got into some of the connectors, but now it’s fine. A hair dryer on the connections may help.

    Nosebadge

This is interesting. I have an original Lotus badge taken off my 1973 Europa Special and I have two original World Championship plaques that go on each side of the car into a chrome holder. I bought both from the Lotus Distributor in Portsmouth many many years ago. The Europa (reg:512LOT) was sold to Japan 25 years ago. I should never have sold it. I wonder what they are worth as I have no need to keep them, so if anyone is interested, let me know. Piers
