  1. Simon In order to get the rings to properly mate with the cylinder walls during break-in the oil film has to break down during this process between ring and wall. An ester based oil like Redline may hinder process. Interesting to know if Silkolene or Motul are used as break in oils? M1 replaces ester with AN and may not hinder process to the same degree as an ester based oil.
  2. It would appear that restoreusa (developed by NASA - and used in Shuttle!!!!!) has minute balls of copper, lead and silver. These "balls" are supposed to be pushed/forced into the scratches in the cylinder walls from the heat and pressure of combustion.
  3. Simon, Does the 300V range have detergents for road use and are they a good choice for cold damp winter conditions.

  8. CSimon I understood that approx a year ago that, Mobil uses Trimethylol Propane (TMP) esters and smaller amounts of other esters in the PAO/ester blend, with appropriate additives. The System-S is a spin-off of their Ultron oils, in which a recently developed ester called "Trimethylol Ethane" or TME (a neopolyol ester) is used. The TME is derived from a carboxylic acid of 3,5,5-trimethyl hexanoic acid and an appropriate alcohol. This ester is extremely oxidation stable. This new ester is currently produced in a viscosity of 4.9-5.0 cSt. When blended with various viscosities of PAO, any multivis grade range is possible without VI's. However, they appear to have dropped hydroscopic esters and produced a better PAO that PAO ester blend.
  9. Simon, Any thoughts on Peter's questions of the 7th? Not too keen on mixing but I would assume OK with M1 to beef up 0W40 if you do not want to change brand. Apparantly M1 is going/gone Esterless using AN instead, is this a backwards step performance wise although not cost wise?

Esters still sound good to me with right blend.

  12. Simon, I will go with your OCI above. With regard to polar esters these will compete with anti wear additives for surface metal. For a pure race engine esters and high moly make sense for temperature extremes, but is the PAO ester approach better for road and track car use? As moly has been mentioned it would be useful to compare additve packages compared to Motul Redline M1 and Castrol.
  13. Simon, Any views on following and ExxonMobil are using GIII in US not in M1, and info on test Engine wear actually decreases as oil ages. This has also been substantiated in testing conducted by Ford Motor Co. and ConocoPhillips, and reported in SAE Technical Paper 2003-01-3119. What this means is that compulsive oil changers are actually causing more engine wear than the people who let their engine's oil get some age on it.
  14. MB Classification was the starting point? Has oil filter been considered re extended drain and add pack?
  15. Memory retention is the reason why skimming does not work and comes back when heated to more extreme tmps.
