  1. Take a close look at the point where the water rail bolts to the head just above no.4 primary. I had a slight weeping from this which caused some fluid to trickle along the head gasket line. Howeaver changed the water rail gasket and it completely cured it, just a thought....... Phil
  2. Cheers Peter, it's a 1.6SS have also just modified the oil pump as per your spec on DA's site and I'm about to fit an Apollo, will stick to Mobil 1 0W-40 then. Phil
  3. Which oil is the best to go for, I use my car for road use only. I have been using 0-40 but as I'm about to change the sump baffle thought I would sound out opinion on this first. Have seen threads saying that mixing the oils can cause premature break-up of the foam baffle. Phil
  4. Robert, have emailed you about throttle and plenum in response to your pics Phil
  5. I've fitted my tax disc here and I managed to undo the bolt with a socket on the inside, you will need to slightly bend the knee panel outwards to gain access but you can easily bend and re-shape it after. Have changed the tax a couple of times without any problems. Caterham actually fit their holder to the bolt that holds down the front bonnet clip, at t he bottom I'm considering moving mine here as I think it spoils the line of the car at the base of the windscreen. Foam Filters

    Foam Filters

As I've got a 1.6SS it has a dry foam filter, does anybody know the process for cleaning one of these, or is it a case of completely changing it. I used to have twin forties on a previous car and this is straightforward as you use a proper cleaning fluid.
  8. Blimy, if Harry changes his mind then can I have 2nd refusal! Phil
  9. Colin, undo the two bolts holding the caliper to the caliper mounting bracket. You need to use two spanners when doing this, one to hold the sliding pin I think its 15mm, and the other to undo the actual bolt 13mm. Carefully ease the caliper away, take care as they have a rigid brake pipe but there is plenty of movement but don't go berserk! Lift out the pads and away you go. Also use copper ease on re-assembly it will help to stop brake squeel. Phil

    Gaskets

    Thanks guys, Phil
  11. I smacked a dead Badger last year just after getting of the ferry in Portsmouth late at night in the dark. I was lucky I surpose as i caught it with the offside wheel and not under the nosecone, the impact and vibration wave that went up my arm was truly something else though. However checked everything and no damage at all, now how lucky is that..... Phil

    Mushy brake pedal

I have these calipers on the back of my 3Dr Cossie, the position of them is pretty much the same as a caterham, however to bleed the system on the cossie you open the nipple and press down the brake pedal and then switch on the ignition whilst holding down the pedal. This activates the ABS pump and the fluid is powered through the rear calipers, it takes 10 secounds for each side to bleed clean. It comes as no surprise to me that they are a pain to bleed on a Caterham, I have partially pushed the caliper out when bleeding as this allows greater flow of fluid but you will need the specaial wind back tool afterwards. Hope this helps. Phil 😬
  13. Tom, I've got a place in Hereford that specializes in nothing except fastenings nuts and bolts etc, can't remember what type they were know but it certainly improved access and being able to line things up. Splitting the headers into 4 separate pipes made a huge difference though and made aligning them into the collector easy, I checked this with powerspeed first and they said it was ok to do this if required. Phil
  14. Mike, I had a few problems similar to this when fitting mine. In the end I decided to slightly re-shape the area of the primary pipe that was fouling the diagonal. I also did away with re-using the manifold studs and went for bolts instead as it made fitting so much easier, also I cut the primaries into separate pipes instead of two and two. On the plus side the change has been great, noticeable pickup, great looks and the sound well........... Phil 😬

    Gaskets

How re-useable is the Cam cover and sump gasket on a K Series? Is it feasible to refit these using something like Hylomar Blue sealant. phil
  16. Chris they cost about £9+P&P from Caterham. Dead easy to fit. Phil
  17. I'm about to fit one of these systems and have noticed threads discussing the extra fitting of a one way valve in the top braided hose which returns to the cam cover. Am I right in thinking that the fitment of a valve will stop the oil draining back into the sump, presumably it keeps the oil back through vacuum pressure? If this is the case then on start up oil pressure should be instant rather than the slight delay without. Does anybody know how effective this is and where I can get such a valve. cheers Phil

    Fitting an A-C tank

Mav, I'm situated in Radnorshire, Mid-Wales so probably too far. I'm not to bothered fitting the actual tank etc as I always do my own work including engine rebuilding and so on, it's just that I don't have any instructions for things like torque settings and how to wire the switch on the dash, I hate doing electrics and the correct sequence for the re-fill with oil i.e. does one undo the breather pipe and fill the tank to avoid the delay with oil pressure on start up. If you've got any instructions then this would be greatly received. cheers Phil
  19. Now, before you all say not again I've just acquired a S/H unit and intend to fit this in the next few weeks. I've replaced the Dowty and O ring seals as I understand they tend to p-- oil out somewhat. I gather there was an article on this in low Flying about a year ago unfortunately my subscription only began last March so I do not have that info. Can anybody send me this info in particular the wiring up of the oil temp switch any help greatly accepted cheers Phil

    Alloy throttle body

Hey Ash your right about Ebay, there was one going about a month back but typical I missed it as did not have access to my station for a few days....phil
  21. It is great stuff and well worth the effort of applying and getting covered yourself, just think you can go for a long walk afterwards in the pouring rain and not get wet.........Phil 😬
  22. Ian just noticed that your car is a 2001, no way they've seized in that space of time. As TF says you must use a special wind back tool on the piston that actually twists the piston back in, if you try to simply push them straight back as you would with front calipers you'll K-nack them.... Phil
  23. Ian, they are definitley the same as a 3dr Sierra cosworth as I've just fitted some to mine. I assume your handbrake mechanism began to stick they are notorius for that, good luck Phil

    LSD noisy

Chris, in theory you should only need to top up both gearbox and diff, I think the diff takes EP90 and the box a Ford gearbox oil GL5, fill both to the lower edge of the filler hole. Phil
