Ialso had the "problem". I spent ages looking for loose bits, worn bushes, several tracking adjustments, worn track rods etc then with someone else available (phil w) was able to determine that the rack was at fault. Once the rack was disassembled it was found that the yoke attaching the rack end to the track rod had broken, new rack required.
Point is, no way would I find that on my own
and no, the Phoenix is no longer terribly local for me, damn it :(
