  1. i KNEW YOU COULD DRIVE TO THE mot IF YOU HAD NONE BUT NOT IF YOU ALSO HAD NO TAX. Sorry about the caps. I had intended to fix some of the little issues like number plate lamps not working at home but I'll fix them away instead. Good one about insurance though (damn loopholes). I'll mot it then tax it locally to where it's stored. PS it hasn't failed, I just know it wants some tlc first so it doesn't. Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  2. My car has been declared off road for a bita dn I'm trying to reverse this. My MOT is run out. My tax has run out. To travel to the MOT centre I need tax for which I need an MOT. How do I get the MOT? Do I need to? Also - I really need to get the car from where it lives at the moment, to my garage where I can work on it so it'll pass the MOT. Any suggestions? 3. Common problem can be not having bled the system properly as it takes ages to get all the air out of the rears. When the rears aren't working too well the whole thing feels a bit wooden. Try bleeding the brakes. Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  4. I sued the Catrham part number and found the comparable unit from Halfords. Can't really help now with specifics as too much time has passed. Also - I probably don't have the same lamps as you do (modified 1994 car) Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  5. 1 gramme per cc (metric I know but I'm sure you can convert)
  6. Fit some xenon bulbs instead. I think it's more likely that your reflectors are past their best but xenon burns brighter for the same wattage and heat output. Did this on the 7 ages ago and transformed the lighting Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  7. I would advise against steel wool as the steel element will remain in the aluminium and cause pitting at a later date. ☹️ Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  8. See the other thread on blatchat at the moment - you may also have an issue with the top steering bush being worn. Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  9. sO YOU NOW HAVE 1) Tracking 2) Bump steer 3) Front to rear rake angle And don't forget to add bolt position of the rear radius arm. I found that having this in the lower position improved matters. 4) Also I reckon mine's got worn balljoints which doesn't help much. 5) I've also had the camber adjusting lock nut be slightly loose so my camber changed under load (also unhelpful). 6) Also: Check that you've not got slop in your rack as this can let the car do whatever it wants (hold the wheels steady and rock the steering wheel-you'll feel it). when you do this it's worth checking that the bush that is behind your dash that supports the steering column is not worn. When it's worn it makes the car feel quite dead and you won't realise it without testing for it. Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  10. Mine don't leak - is this a bad thing?!! . I sealed mine with some gasket compound to stop the rattling but they didn't leak then either. There shouldn't be any fuel able to back up this far should there? Unless you've an XF. When you reach certain rpm the engine spits out as much fuel as it takes in (only an expression), I think that's at about 3000rpm, due to resonance I believe. Do you run there alot? Mine used to be an XF Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  11. I assume that you've inspected the fuel filter baskets for any signs of leaks? The nut that sits on the top of the basket can leak fuel. Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  12. Good jacking point at the rear. Unless it mean that the bar gets bent by doing so. Dreaded previous owner? Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs

  14. Think that you can get Bilsteins for older cars. If not try freestyle. Didn't have a good experience with Ledas myself Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  15. Replace dmy XF with zetec. Am happy with it but would recommend selling and getting a newer car with better suspension geometry ('96 onwards) if you can bear it - I couldn't bear selling mine after so many skinned knuckles. In retrospect I would do so.
  16. Have fittee Alcon - no drawbacks that I can see. Like them muchly Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  17. Ah, yes, you still use yours don't you? If you park the car permanently in the garage it's never an issue ☹️ Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs

    Fuel gauge

Check the earth to the unit - there's a cable under the left hand side of the dash which tends to fail to make a circuit over time . Gets you lots of funny stuff - does it get worse when you turn the lights on or the indicators? If so - earth Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs

Have to go with anti freeze - leaking radiator? Forgotten to tighten the radiator / header tank cap? Loose hose? Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  20. We in the 'berks' area know a man that has a newer zetec thingy under his bonnet which is supposed to be lighter too for the same power output. Supplied by Raceline. Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs

    Zetec Help

Servicing is dead easy - there's nothing to do but change oil really that you wouldn't do on any other 7. As to difference between a K - You'll find the zetec will pull in any gear where a std K wouldn't. My opinion is that the zetec is the best tourer and easier to live with but it is rougher running. It's a longer stroke engine, so if you're familiar with the xflow or K you could miss the rev happy nature where they go ballistic at high revs. The Zetec goes to those revs but it doesn't blast through the last few thousand so much faster than all the rest, like the shorter stroke stuff (I'm probably offending all those (like me) with zetecs but I think it's true). Lastly, it's likely that most zetecs are conversions of older chassis cars (pre '93 or so) and they wouldn't ride as well as the conversion you identify would. Personally I like mine, I like the oomph when you bury the throttle and it sounds better than a standard K to me. Get the close ratio box from SPC though and you'll find it even better. Also - if it's on carbs, check the progression which can be suspect if they haven't been modified correctly. Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
  25. Sounds like the wife to me. Cover her in oil and apologise before going on another track day. If there's anything more important than the car being trackworthy, it's ensuring that the wife is more so! Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec carbs
