  1. POSTED ON BEHALF OF TONY PASHLEY

    Hendrixs…

I don’t know if you’ve been able to make any progress; if not, this may be of interest.

Do you have a mechanical fuel pump?

I experienced precisely the same symptoms that you describe in post number 3 above - even down to the car letting me down, likewise, en route to an MOT test (in my case, in the middle of five lanes of M25 in the morning rush-hour).

I, and several others, had convinced ourselves the problem had to be electrical but couldn’t fathom it out (this is on a Xflow/carbs/electronic ignition/dizzy/no EM). I gave in and resorted to ‘diagnosis by replacement’, swapping out as much as possible from my stock of spares - all without success until I finally removed the mechanical fuel pump. The movement of the actuating lever felt inconsistent and just a little ‘jerky’. It was not really clear to me how a faulty spring or diaphragm could be interacting with that particular time/temp/load cycle, but once I’d fitted a new fuel pump the problem disappeared instantly and entirely.

I’ve since switched to an electric pump, but for reasons unrelated to this failure.

Your case may be different, but hope you can resolve it soon.

    Tony Pashley.

  2. What a brilliant venue and a great weekend.  So glad that Wiscombe is still on the calendar.

Here's how it looked from behind 8 valves

.  Quite happy with the run, and especially with the fact that I managed not to get too distracted by the fact that my tonneau tried to make a break for freedom half way up the hill!

Equally, I took the car out for a run on the road today and the clutch cable snapped within 1/2 mile.  Looks like I was lucky *byebye*

  3. HendrixsWhiteStratReturns,

I'm genuinely interested in why you say that.  Without wanting to tempt fate, having been properly jetted on the rolling road 5-6 years ago, my Webers never get any attention.  Maybe I might check the balance between front and rear once a year (2 min job), but other than that, they just work.  Now, I don't do the miles these days that I once did, but the car starts easily (battery kept on conditioner) and the carbs are just not something I ever think about.  What issues do they give you?

  4. A Xflow upgraded with 3D ignition (as many are) need not be that thirsty.  I certainly know of someone with an (admittedly highly tuned) Duratec who gets far worse fuel efficiency than I do with my 1700 Xflow.  I am probably biased, but I love my Crossflow and it has done me well on road, track and sprint for coming up 20 years now.  I've sometimes dreamt of more power, but in reality, its 150bhp is probably not far off the sweet spot for performance in a Seven.  When I first had the car, parts could be picked up in scrappies for next to nothing.  That's certainly not  the case any more, but everything you could possibly need is still available, often manufactured to far better quality than the originals.  Pick up a Burtons catalogue for details.  The achillies heal of the original Caterham 1700 Xflow was the pistons which were only generally good for 20k miles.  I doubt there are many engines out there on the original pistons however.  Ideally, you'd be looking for an engine which had been upgraded to forged pistons which are stronger but also lighter and lower friction.

  5. Have to agree that Lynn did a fantastic job.  *clap*  Quite how she managed to keep up a commentary all afternoon without even the benefit of being able to see what times were being set, I'm not sure...

Mind you, I don't know what she said about me.  If I did, I might not be feeling so generous!

    Great weekend all round.

  6. To carry this to its logical conclusion - where are people buying their ZZSs from, and what are they paying?  BMTR looks like £120/corner, but Birmingham isn't desperately convenient for me.  Other than Avon directly and CC, anyone else I should be looking at in the SE?

    Cheers,

  7. I received a 10% off voucher for Grand Prix Raceware with my MSA license this year (not as good as the VAT free available at Autosport Show, but better than nothing!)  Otherwise, if buying from DT, ask for Dave Kimberley  who is/was? a Club member and will normally offer 10% off too...
