  1. Thanks all - so it looks like the "Quality Ratchet crimper" at £30 in the site which Mark has suggested would be about right? Doesn't sound too expensive if this is an appropriate piece of kit? Regards -Michael.
  2. Hmm, looks like a new tol is needed. No, I only have a cheapy one without a ratchet. Any recommendations re makes/types to look for, or is it just a "ratchet crimper"? OK, so I invest in the proper tool, then: Strip insulation twist strands together? Dip in copper grease (what does this help with?) Squeeze until ratchet mechanism does its bit Do I need to worry about heat shrink sleeving? Thanks all - Michael.
  3. What is the best way to attach spade connectors and the like to wires? Whenever I use my crimping tool I end up with a connection which I never trust 100%. I then normally try to add solder and get in a mess Is there a guide to best practice here? What about heat shrink and the like? I've jusr received my Big Red starter button from RS components (ordered 7pm last night, delivered 08:40 this morning - amazing ) and want to make a good job when I do the wiring. Thanks! Michael.
  4. And just to end a happy day, BGH have just called me - they's stripped my gearbox and quoted me less than I expected for the rebuild and conversion *smile* Michael.
  5. Thanks for that Norman! As Tam says, I now have to travel on business, and will miss the shed's do ☹️ However, if you could please bring this along for Tam, it would be much appreciated! All the best - Michael.
  6. Thanks Shaun - didn't think of that Seriously, paint MIGHT do the job, but I'm looking for something which will go "in" the material, rather than ot on the top and possibly flake off. Ian - Thanls for the hint - I'll have a look. Michael.
  7. OK, so a red leather dash isn't everyone's idea of great taste, but it's what our 7 came with and I'm (quite) attached to it. However, it's rather tatty after 13 years of wear, particularly around the indicator switch where the colour has worn away. Does anyone know how I could restore it to its original colour without replacing the lot? Thanks - Michael. Edited by - Mcalvert on 29 Nov 2004 11:42:03
  8. I bought one from Redline in Caterham only last week so suggest that you give them a call. Only cheap too! Michael.
  9. Matt - not at all - I did exactly the same a couple of years ago and found that with no screen it was amazing fur for about 2 minutes, then pure pain! I took the plunge and went Brooklands in my case and have never looked back however - go for it! Michael.
  10. Er, Brent... This is 2004 and there is a great new thing called "All day Opening *smile*" Mind you, when will we catch up with the rest of the world and have "all night opening" as well? Michael.
  11. Thought that might be the answer. It's time for me to swap my 0.5l pot for a 1l pot at Halfords in that case... Michael.
  12. ... to do a fluid change on my X-flow? Thanks! Michael.
  13. Hmmm, The Alloy is more lime 4.somethink kg and a bit more than £100 also. Probably still a lot cheaper than the magnsesium one, anyway. Mind you, carbon, magnesium ... GREAT pub brag words Michael.
  14. Yes, they marry up with the standard bases. These are used on the front of the half soord as they will only come off in one direction, so that you can remove them, but the wind does not get underneath them. On the downside, if someone catcheds the door accidentally when getting outm the poppers tend to break rather than come off the base, so I suggest keeping a few spares in reserve (beware, they're £1 each!) Michael.
  15. No problem - As long as they are ready and fit in the car, I'll drive all those going to BGH round myself. Regards - Michael.

    Tyres

Ozzy, There was an advert in LF last month I think of a tyre company in High Wycombe that had decent Yoko prices including fitting. I've always used George Polleyin the past, but next time I'll give these guys a chance if they can save the postage and fitting charges. Sorry - don't have details to hand though - Michael.
  17. No problem Norman - I forgot that yours was now going to BGH too... Michael.
  18. Right, it's just got a lot easier. Quaife have confirmed that there is no difference in the casings, it's just that they have an optional conversion layshaft which can be bought if anyone needs it. They indicated that they might be willing to throw a few in for cheap/free if required by anyone. From the previous posts, I am not sure that anyone does actually require this conversion kit. If anyone disagrees with this, please let me know! As I said before, it looks like the bare castings are now there, and are being readied. If I can get the time off work, and they are ready, I propose to go up to Quaife on Tuesday 16th to pick up my case and take it to BGH. At the same time, I will pick up and deliver yours Simon, and get Luke's lid to be sent on. Andy, if your case is going to be built by BGH, would you like me to deliver it directly to them and save the courier charge, or would you like it to go to you first? Regards, Michael.
  19. More to the point Shaun, if you dropped the engine off at Milton Keynes, could you ever convince Gill that all you had changed were the verniers 😬 Michael. Edited by - Mcalvert on 2 Nov 2004 16:17:47
  20. Nice light one though 😬 Michael.
  21. OK - will mention this to them Michael. Edited by - Mcalvert on 2 Nov 2004 13:41:51
  22. BTW - have jus been told that the cases are now in They need to be machined and de-burred so within 7 days or so should be ours. Regards - Michael.
  23. OK - so here's my understanding of the requirements: Norman Verona Standard Ford Stub - will be fitted with BGH internals Barry Train Machined for a Quaife Dog Box Simon Bell Ford Stub - will be fitted with BGH internals Michael Calvert Ford Stub- will be fitted with BGH internals Nick D TBA Peter T Ford Stub Davey B TBA but likely to be standard Ford Andy Barefoot TBA Is that correct so far? Regards - Michael.
  24. Sinon - If you're going with BGH then I'm 99.999% sure that you still have the Ford stub. However, I'd appreciate if you could double check as this is what a fair few of us are doing! Regards - Michael.
  25. Hello all, I have had confirmation from Quaife that they have received the order and cheque which I sent. They have asked for re-confirmation that the gearbox cases will all be used with the standard Ford stubs. I know that this will be the case for me – is this different for anyone? Regards, Michael.
