  1. Based on this, I went out at the weekend to buy a decent grease gun as the cheap one which I had previously never seemed to have much luck at getting oil into the trunnion grease nipple.

Guess what, the new gun has the same problem - so what am I doing wrong? Is it that the fitting is wrong? The gun doesn not "snap" onto the nipple - should it? All I seem to get is oil on the floor. I have taken the nipple off and the spring valve thingy does push in OK... Advice please!

    Thanks - Michael.

  2. Thanks.

Can someone confirm that the gearbox (and the diff) should just be filled until they overflow? I'm noty going to cause any problems with the a frame bush getting oily if I fill the diff to the max am I?

    Thanks - Michael.

  3. I have been trying to find EP80 oil to top up the gearbox, but the two motor factors I have been to only have combined EP 80-90 oil. Can I safely use this, or should I be looking for the "Real thing"?

    Thanks - Michael.

  4. This is probably an old chetnut, but without the search facility, I'd appreciate your advice.

I'm looking to replace my rather shot adjustable Spax dampers on my 1991 De Dion Xflow. What are the relative merits of the different options such as Leda/Spax etc etc please?

Also, in the meantime I need to temporarily increase the ride hight of the car before Le Mans. Unfortunately, I don't have the proper C spanners and the collars look pretty rusty. Is there any trick to sdjusting them without the proper tool, or is it not worth trying? Is there anyone in the Berks/Bucks area who has a spanner they could nend me?

    Thanks & regards - Michael.

  5. This won;t help much but a couple of years ago, I was in the same situation.

Not having found a better source, I ended up shelling out £75 ish to Caterham. About 2 weeks later, went to the Stoneleigh Kit car show and there was a stand selling them new for £20 ish.

I wasn't happy, but I'm afriad I didn't take the details of the company...

    Good luck - Michael.

  6. I had a can mixed for me at a local motor factors, which is pretty much perfect on my car which is standard Caterham Red.

    The "formula" was apparently:

    TB40 - 61.0

    11-65.3

    54-82.4

    59-101.7

No ideal what it means, but it did the job!

    Michael.

  7. Thanks to Peter Griffiths, I was pointed here:

If you are in a hurry, I do suggest phoning rather than e-mail as they seem to only deal with web enquiries in batch mode! BTW, they also do a fantastic bag for headsets which is £16 or so, which I find great when travelling.

    All the best - Michael.

  8. Andy,

I had exactly the same thing on my car in the first 6 months of ownership - although rather an older car, I doubt that the clutch cable arrangement is any different.

The problem for me was this: The eye on the end oc the cable is supposed to pivot as the pedal moves - if it siezes, then the cable itself bends every time the pedal is depressed. Adjusting the tightness of the nut holding the cable in, and a bit of grease every 6 months and I've never had one snap again.

Hope this helps you too - Michael.

  9. Hmm- thanks for your feedback so far. My point is that it is very ambiguous if it states that "Engines" must have a secondardy mechanism.

The main reason for my concern is that the only car that I saw with any throttle closing problem at Curborough last year was that his second spring which was fitted for the event was fouling the first!

    Regards -Michael.

  10. Can someone who knows please advise me regarding getting our 1700 Xflow ready for its first sprint later this year?

I was of the belief that in order to pass scrutineering, I would need double external throttle return springs on the carbs, and I have heard other people say this also. However, reading the Blue Book E12.4.2 it simply states" Engines... must be equipped with a positive method of throttle closing by means of external spring/springs so that in the event of failure of any part of the throttle linkage the throttle(s) are sprung closed"

To me, this means that the single external spring already fitted should be enough. Am I right?

I appreciate your help as I don't want to get turned away from the first event!

    Thanks - Michael.

  11. There was a stand at Stoneleigh last year selling them for about £15-£20 if I remember properly.

This was after I (stupidly) spend the Caterham price because I didn;t know where they came from ☹️

    Michael.
