Quick update -
Matt at Quaife was supposed to be checking availabilty with the parts manager yesterday and coming back to me. He hasn't ☹️
I sent him a chasing e-mail at lunchtime and hope that by monday we will have an answer.
Regards - Michael.
-
Still waiting for quote from Quaife. Will let you know when they come back to me.
Regards - Michael.
-
Fantastic - YHM!
Michael.
-
As per the title - doesn anyone have a spare central mirror stem for an SPA mirror available?
I know that a few people have gone for shorter/longer stems, and might have a spare knocking around?
Thanks!
Michael.

OK - Quaife are preparing me a formal quote, then we should be good to go.
Peter - where dod you find the reference QMAMCS? I cannot see it in their catalogue, but have asked them for their best price as part of this overall buy.
Regards,
Michael.

OK – new Summary of who wants what.
I propose to put a deadline of next Monday evening to close this. After this time, I will talk again with Quaife to see what deal we can get on the lids with the number of requests that we have. I will then request cheques for the appropriate value and place the order when I have these.
I believe the current interest to be as follows. Any changes/additions, please let me know.
Barry Train CONFIRMED - 1 x Alloy Gearbox case QMAMC5
Norman Verona CONFIRMED 1 x Alloy Gearbox case QMAMC5
Simon Bell CONFIRMED 1 Alloy Gearbox case QMAMC5 and 1 x Lid
Myself CONFIRMED 1x Alloy Gearbox case QMAMC5 and 1x Lid
David Chesney AWAITING CONFIRMATION 1 x Alloy Gearbox case QMAMC5
Nick D CONFIRMED 1x Alloy Gearbox case QMAMC5
Luke Beaumont CONFIRMED 1x Lid ONLY
Regards,
Michael.

Ok - just waiting for re-confirmation from David and we will be good to go.
David - if you could please drop me a note confirming that you are still interested, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks - Michael.

(As posted on ChitChat sorry for duplication)
Ok - This is starting to look good.
So far, we have interest from the following - each interested in 1 x Quaife Ford Sierra alloy main case (5 sp) part number QMAMC5 as seen on page 16 of Quaife's catalogue here
Barry Train
Norman Verona
Simon Bell
David Chesney
Myself
I would appreciate if you could re-confirm your interest in this to my home e-mail address which is michael_calvert@dsl.pipex.com
If everyone confirms, we are ready to go. Based on this I'll confirm the order with Quaife and request a cheque for the value. This will then just leave the question of shipping to be resolved.
if anyone else is interested in joining this bulk buy, please let me know ASAP.
Best regards,
Michael.

Fit an alloy bellhousing? Quite a few kg saved for not too much money?
Replace the clutch as you suggested.
Clean the engine bay whild you have got good accesss.
Oh, and if you are RAELLY bored while waiting for the engine to come back as I was, polish the exhaust!
Michael.

Michael.
-
Right - here's the deal and it looks like a good one!
The Alloy casing which saves 4.5kg is normally £345, they are willing to offer for £276 if we can get 5 orders together.
The Layshaft which I believe is also required is normally £45 but they will offer for £36, again for a minimum order of 5.
The Top cover which they recommend for additional strength they will reduce from £58 to £46.40 for 5.
All of this is plus VAT and delivery to be discussed.
Full details are on Page 16 of Quaife's catalogue - here
We have 4 people interested so far. Anyone else?
Regards - Michael.
-
Right - that's 4 potential takers already. I'll give Quaife a call tomorrow and have a chat with them.
Regards,
Michael.
-
Good suggestion Simon - I'll start a new thread to see who else would be interested.
For me, the Quaife casinmg makes a lot of sense. It's not an AWFUL lot of money when rebuilding the gearbox anyway, and it's a very useful weight saving and a lovely and strong piece of kit.
Regards,
Michael.

Sounds like the symptoms which I had a couple of years ago on the way to Le Mans. Turned out to be the coil as suggested above.
A replacement from a French Scrappie cleared the problem for good!

Hello All,
I am planning on having my gearbox upgraded by BGH over the winter and on going to the Quaife Alloy case as a weight saving measure at the same time.
AMMO managed to get a good deal on a bulk buy of the Quaife alloy cases last year. Is there anyone else interested in clubbing together and going for another bulk buy? I would be happy to arrange this if there is the interest.
Regards,
Michael.

Mike Riley (Metal Mickey) is a master craftsman who has made the ali wings and nose on his car (and restores some SERIOUS historic machinery). He could be a good person to talk to.
Michael.
-
Norman,
I am also hoping to buy an Ali gearbox case from Quaife in the next couple of months. I was considering seeing if anyone else was interested to get a bulk buy going as AMMO had some considerable success last year doing the same. What are your timescales?
Regards - Michael.
-
If you don;t mind my asking, did they give you a price?
Michael.
-
Paul,
If you did get them to make you a taller one and you didn;t want your standard one, I'd be interested in buying it from you...
Michael.
-
Pop rivetted to the front of the passenger footwell is the classis place. Is that not available for you?
Regards Michael.

You didn't leave the handbrake on did you?
[ahem] a "friend" I know did that and had LOTS of smoke :-)

Dear All,
I would appreciate your help in choosing the best options for gearbox ratios when I have the gearbox hopefully rebuilt by BGH at the end of the year. This is a long message but please read on as I would really appreciate some input to help me make the right decisions.
The car is a 1700 Crossflow on a 244 cam with approx 155 BHP – It is rev-limited at 7300 and gives peak power around 7000 (I believe). It only really comes on cam at 4000 revs. I have the standard 3.92 diff and run 185/60R13 tyres.
I have the standard 5 speed box, which I believe has the following ratios;
1st 3.360
2nd 1.810
3rd 1.260
4th 1:1
5th 0.825
Playing with Gearcalc gives the following results for the set-up as it is today:
Gear Mph per 1000 RPM Mph @7000 RPM Mph @7300 RPM
--------------------------------------------------------
1 4.91 34 36
2 9.12 64 67

Gear Change RPM drop (change @7000) RPM drop (change @7300)

2 -> 3 -2127 (to 4873) -2218 (to 5082)
3 -> 4 -1444 (to 5556) -1506 (to 5794)
4 -> 5 -1225 (to 5775) -1277 (to 6023)
What I am looking for is a better spread of gears low down (car gets used for sprinting) but still to maintain reasonable road manners for touring as we do 8-10K miles a year.
Is the RMP drop the best figure to monitor when choosing the ratios? I guess that I am looking for each drop to put me back in the power band? Assuming that this is the correct approach, what is the logic behind the number of revs dropped decreasing at each step as you move through the gears? I am sure that this is for a good reason, but I am having trouble getting my head around it!
The best option seems to be what BGH calls the E7 box which gives me the following choices:
1st 2.66 or 2.75
2nd 1.750
3rd 1.260
4th 1:1
5th 0.82, 0.84, 0.86. 0.89
My best guess for a choice would be as below which would give the following figures.
1st 2.75
2nd 1.750
3rd 1.260
4th 1:1
5th 0.86
However, this is built on gut feel rather than real logic so any comments and things to consider in making this choice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks –
Michael.

How do you overfill the diff please? I thought that you just filled it through the bolt hole until it would not take any more and peed out everywhere? I'm not sure that I have a breather pipe - do I?
BTW car is a 1992 De Dion.
Thanks! Michael.

No Problem Andy. So I am sure though and do not double count, did you send me an e-mail from the address S*****b@aol.com?
