  1. Chomp Chomp Chomp. Thanks Adrian (the diet starts tomorrow...) Michael.
  2. Ah, but Nifty - when madam says "What do you want for Christmas" - it often pays to have an answer ready and waiting... Michael.
  3. My old wooden workbench is falling apart so in preparation for the rebuilding of H5 URF, it's time for a replacement (Tam take note, Christmas is coming soon etc etc... ) Does anyone have any recommendations for where to go. Can be up to 1m45 long, have a sturdy (wooden?) surface to mount a vice etc to. Some storeage underneath would ne nice too. Have looked at Machine Mart & Screw Fix - any recommendations for other places to check? Thanks - Michael (currently sipping a bottle of Chapman's Best from a 50th anniversary glass). 4. Caterham technical has access to the old wiring diagrams. Might be worth a call to them? regards, Michael.
  5. I was that other person delivering my chassis to Arch last weekend and damn rivets still haunt my nightmares. How many of the little blighters are there? What's more, before I took the chassis up to Arch I check and rechecked that I had punched all the rivets through to the chassis yet I still found 4 or 5 that I'd missed when I got to Arch Good luck! Michael.
  6. As part of my chassis strip down I need to decide which parts should be refurbished/replaced. I am obviously having all the bushes renewed, but what about parts like the track rod ends - they are only cheap to replace, but do they play an active part in the suspension or should I jusr regrease and put back? Thanks, Michael.
  7. No problem at all with riv-nuts in the ali. I then used some really tarty red anodised bolts to fit in them Michael.
  8. Mike - each to their own I replaced my rivets with rivnuts (24 if I remember rightly) - takes a minute to undo them all as long as you have an electric screwdriver with the right attachment! Regards - Michael.
  9. Danny - a move to class 4 sounds like the best idea I've heard all day (for the rest of us lower down class 3 anyway 😬) Michael.
  10. Thanks - I don;t think there;ll be any problem getting the Alpha wiring out - as you say that has bespoke connectors and is labeled. My question is more what comes in the generic "engine" look - I assume that this is the main wires from engine to earth, battery, alternator, coil etc? Michael.
  11. Thanks for the kind offer John I may be in touch later in the year! Regards - Michael.
  12. H5 URF is nearly down to bare chassis and will soon be back at Arch for some TLC. Despite my mechanical numptiness, I am fairly confident that I will be able to get the mechanicals back in (maybe with a little help) but it's the electricals that are keeping me awake at night. Since the wiring taken out is pretty ropey in parts, I've ordered a new car loom from Caterham, but not a new engine loom. Can anyone tell me exactly what the engine loom comprises, as I guess I'll need to open up the spaghetti mess that I now have in a large box, and separate the two. The car is a 1700 Xflow on Alpha 3D ignition. Thanks - Michael.
  13. A less fun (but also less destructive) option is shown here Michael.

    Rear ARB?

Thanks all for the advice. The car is coming apart a treat at the moment. However, just starting to have the disturbed nights thinkintg about whether it will ever go back together again Michael.

    Rear ARB?

I know that setup is a very personal thing, but do most people run with a rear ARB connected or sprinting? H5 URF was not equipped with the fittings for a rear ARB but now she is being stripped down and sent back to Arch I have the opportunity for such an "upgrade" - what do most people run? Thanks - Michael.
  16. How easy is it to get a good Crackle paint finish on a cam cover - is it a DIY job or one for the pros? Regards, Michael.
  17. I got new wings from DC a couple of years ago. Prices are very competitive, but they were quite a lot thinner/flimsier than my previous "Caterham" parts. That did mean that they were a lot lighter though... Michael.
  18. Crikey - yes, almost exactly the same break as on ours. I did speak with Bruce at the 50th who confirmed that he had had "4 or 5" similar cases over the years. Certainly said that it could be satisfactorily fixed on a Saturday. However, I know that he's on a week's holiday this week - i'd give him a call next week to discuss. Regards - Michael.
  19. Thanks for the advice so far. Looks like Caterham can still have a loom made up for me - does anyone know if this comes labelled up. or is it just colour coded? There wan mention of a wiring diagram on the FAQ but I can;t see that :-( I do have a wiring diagram for a Crossflow (probably a few years after mine was built) - hope that has not changed too much. I'm hoping that Caterham technical can sort me out if not. Regards, Michael.
  20. Thanks all for your words of advice. If I do go for a new loom (must call Caterham/Red;line and see how much they cost) - does this come labelled, or is it just colour coded? Michael.
  21. What have I done?!? A combination of a broken weld (wingstay to chassis), a few beers the night before and a nagging doubt that H5 URF, being 16 years old and not exactly lightly used, and I spent Saturday starting to take her apart for a complete strip down over the winter. The thing is, my mechanical skills are, erm, limited and I've got a nagging worry at the back of my head that it may not be all plain sailing. So please, all those who have trodden this path before, please let me have your words of wisdom before I make too many obvious mistakes. It's the wiring that's worrying me most - is there a trick to labelling the wires up so that there is a chance that in a few months time it will all make sense again? I'm tempted by a new loom, but worried that this might make things more complicated still? Anyway, be warned that there may me a lot of questions coming over the next few months Michael.
  22. Hmmm. I'm in one of those pictures yet have no recollection of having my photo taken. Must have been drugged Great evening, even if bits of it are a bit hazy Michael.
  23. OIII! - there's nothing wrong with flares [twisted logic] Downforce means drag (bad), so surely upforce is good?!? [/twisted logic] Michael.
  24. Well, it was Tam any my first time to Wiscombe and what a great place... High points which stick in my mind - - following a local who we hoped knew where he was going to the venue down tiny country lanes, through the forest, into and out of the morning mist and over a ford - an amazing start to the day - Having been to venues like Harewood and Lys y Fran, I didn't think that there could be any more picturesque hillclimbs - how wrong! - The array of machinery from the 1920s (?) onwards all being driven the way they were intended. - The paddock banter/mickey take/laughter/help and support which is now so typical of the L7 club events. - Meeting several L7 club members who had come along to spectate and who, having read the reports by a certain Mr Snotes, wanted to talk about what they needed to do to join us next year Low Points Commiserations to Adrian and Jeff who had offs - hope the damage is quickly fixed ☹️ Anyway - great weekend, great people, great event. Gutted that the season is nearly at its end. Regards, Michael.
