  1. I fitted a post 96 long front to my 94 car during crash repairs and found it was straight forward. If fitted by Arch, there should not be any issues with position of engine mounts or other pickups. I found the general handling and feel of the car was improved. Wide track was designed for the post 96 chassis but can be fitted to a pre 96 chassis, but it must be remembered the top damper fixing is lower so the spring / damper is considerably more horizontal than design, thus affecting the rising rate. Malcolm
  2. Paul I had my extinguisher cylinder refurbished at Demon Tweeks about two years ago, but was expensive at around £70...... Other annual service on the system that I do is to remove and lubricate the inner operating cable. Neglect and water ingress with corrosion can result in a refusal to operate when most needed!! Malcolm
  3. Nick Just make sure any foil covering on the fabric heat shield tubing for the wiring is stripped well away from any exposed terminals on the starter cable....guess how I know....it was touching the terminal and crankcase! Malcolm
  4. See my edit above about your 1400 flywheel. Malcolm
  5. I used all the 1400 clutch components when I fitted an 1800 (the pressure plate is still fine 13 years and hundreds of hillclimb starts later). Cutting the spigot is very straight forward, measure twice and wear eye protection. Malcolm edited to add, just in case you were unaware, the original 1400 LW flywheel from Caterham (and original Rover item) has a different trigger pattern for the ECU. Not a problem if you are using a re-programmable ECU such as Emerald, but it won’t work with a later Rover ECU.
  6. Nick No spacer need. Small amount of fettling metal off the crankcase was needed. The older Brise has the solenoid under this starter, so the wires were a slight stretch, so I recall I lengthened both the solenoid signal and brown car 12v feed wires and renewed the starter lead with a longer one. I ran all the wires through heat shield tubing and installed a separate relay to protect against k click. Never had any heat related problems (but sadly the solenoid has failed - maybe heat? Brise don’t support my particular model any longer, and a specialist auto electrician was unable to identify the solenoid despite an extensive search - cheapo made in China) so I’ve had to re-fit the original. Malcolm
  7. Correct, you need a new 2nd gear, at least. All of the dog teeth that are visible are nicely rounded, and gear engagement will be difficult at best. chipped gear is not the cause.
  8. K series dry sump system (remote tank rather than belltank) on eBay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Caterham-7-Rover-K-series-complete-drysump-system/142571784985?hash=item2131f0cb19:g:oJMAAOSwa81aBClI I have no connection with the seller.
  9. There is a history of standard piston failure associated with regular rpm in excess of 7k. There are some stronger Rover pistons (Trophy 160), but might be best to consider forged pistons.
  10. I usually stuff a paper rag in the hole when working around / above the clutch fork and remove after.
  11. Beware the standard Rover flywheel bolts are easily damaged during removal (guess how I know!) so use the correct size impact socket along with a Rover flywheel locking tool (on eBay for not a lot) for both undoing and refitting. On refitting ensure the mating faces are clean, then use the old bolts initially to seat the flywheel and then replace with new bolts and torque up correctly.
  12. Hi Rob Please include me on the tour. Thanks Malcolm
  13. Pugwash, I ve generally found that with regular use and maintenance the Elan is very reliable. Unfortunately these days many owners only do 100s of miles each year and this is why reliability problems arise. Having said that, I ve got a three hour drive home in the Elan on Saturday from Pembrokeshire, fingers crossed!
  14. Deadline looms - now is the time to buy shares to save the Llys y Fran pub at £200 each, so far £120k of £300k needed to save it, otherwise it will close. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-west-wales-41319425 Where will Jeremy go for his hanner peint cwrw next year?
  15. A nice Elan DHC S3, 4 or Sprint would fit your requirements, John
  16. Jeff That little spout on the top of the rad is flimsy, don't snap it off like I did! malcolm
