  1. Good point, I used the old Nitromors and the powder coat stood no chance...as you say, the latest version is useless.
  2. I refurbished the completely stripped chassis using the paint on POR 15 system. This was several years ago and the paint is still in good condition. Remove the old powder coat with paint stripper, clean up any rust and throughly clean/degrease the chassis tubes with Marine Clean. Wash off with water and paint the POR phosphate etch solution and wash off (after the correct time on metal). Finally brush on the POR 15 paint, second coat if necessary before the first has fully cured. It cures to a smooth, durable, chip resistant surface. The key is taking your time and throughly degreasing and washing off the etch after the correct time.
  3. LifeLine service agents will not service FEs that are more than 10 years old. If it’s lost it’s pressure it’s scrap.
  4. I would suggest selling the 6 speed (good demand for them) use the money towards obtaining a Type 9 five speed and refit it with a different set of gear ratios, look at the choice from BGH Gear-tech as one option. I agree this would be a far better option given the torque characteristics of the Duratec engine, and suit your requirement for fast road and touring. As above, use a gear calculator eg Quaife. Malcolm
  5. Thank you for the contributions above. Now sorted, with many thanks to Andrew Revill. The problem was due to poor contacts / incomplete connection in the Caterham to Rover engine loom multi plug with interruption of immobiliser to ECU signal. Malcolm
  6. As title, looking to re-new the sender. Thanks Malcolm
  7. EU3 K series. Another owner’s car. Out of the blue yesterday, after a long run, the engine failed to restart properly. On dis-arming the immobiliser with the blipper, get the red flashing light extinguished, the fuel pump runs, the engine fires and runs for a few seconds and then stops. All attempts to re-start result in the engine not firing. Re-arming and dis-arming the immobiliser produces the same result. Tried disconnecting / reconnecting the battery and rebooting the immobiliser with several blips on the fob, but getting the same result. I suspect this is the immobiliser failing to dis-arm, but I am not familiar with this system, my car is older. Help please! Malcolm
  8. See edit in first posting on this thread.
  9. Caterham 6 Speed to suit K series. Full working order. Currently still in the car so can be test driven. Will be removed and available in early September. Genuine reason for sale. Located in North East Wales. Offers in the region of £1500.
  10. If the Elise engine is EU3 and your existing engine/loom is EU2 you’ll need to fit a distributor drive to the inlet camshaft (or if same spec cams the swap the inlet camshaft), unless you fit the whole EU3 ECU/loom/wasted spark system from the Elise.
  11. Just checked, the alternator mounting bracket has the same size roll pin and is 13.4mm diameter when fitted ie compressed.
  12. Phil, I’ll see you at Harewood hillclimb, I’m doing Sunday only, but I guess you’ll be doing both days as usual?
  13. Nah! He’s not fast enough to cause the oil to surge!
  14. As above the correct torque is 205 Nm. Official Rover manual does not specify locking agent. The presence of locking agent alters the torque setting (so you don’t know what it actually has been set to) and next time around it’s difficult to be sure that the thread in the crank is perfectly free from old locking agent. I have fitted several and they have always remained tight. I have come across a crank bolt on someone else’s car that was under torqued and covered in locking agent..... Malcolm
  15. The problem may come for you if it is fitted to R4/500 K, as the AP listed above is up rated for these engines. CC then spec’ed it across the rest of the K range. So a Helix or Sierra may well be ok for lower performance engines, but I’m unsure for if they are suitable for R’s
  16. A recent thread highlighted the unavailability of the AP clutch centre plate for the K series (CP2257-44 diameter 190 mm), and using the alternative Helix clutch. It seems this is due to AP’s production moving to Italy and it is uncertain when it will resume. In the mean time, your centre plate can be refurbished (providing it just needs new friction material, and otherwise springs etc are serviceable), contact Alan Carson in the sales department in the AP facility in Coventry. Cost is £63 plus VAT and postage. Nil cost if you send it and it fails inspection. Malcolm EDIT 8/8/18. Looks like this was done as a one off favour and this is not a general refurbishment service. Apologies if this has caused any confusion.
  17. Revilla, Thanks. Searched information is a bit confusing and Rover appear to have issued two versions of instructions for this job, but what you say makes good sense.
  18. Thanks,Ian. I saw some universal tools when searching, I’ll relook at them.
  19. Rear VVC cam belt replacement. About to tackle this, any tips or advice, please? I can see restraining the inlet camshaft rear gear without Rover tool 12-182 (no longer available) to undo/secure the retaining bolt might be a challenge (I was reluctant to rely on the combined effort of the front cam gear and flywheel locking tools, putting a strain on new rear belt on refitting.) Malcolm
  20. I need the part numbers for Gates cambelts, front and rear, and also the manual tensioner (or is this the same as the regular K16) for a VVC, please. Thank you. Malcolm
  21. My 94 car originally had a mini based rack and was refurbished by Redline (under previous ownership) for a reasonable price. Parts will be available and as suggested a local specialist should be able to do this for a reasonable price. I think the only modification from the original is the fitting of lock limiting collars. I had similar problems with the Titan/Caterham relationship over the re-manufacture of K dry sump pans.... Malcolm
  22. +1 for Millers, but for a stock engine I use the 20w50 semi synthetic as it quite a bit cheaper than the fully synth.
