  1. Are we allowed to test them? Jonathan
  2. *arrowup* *arrowup*I was going to suggest something like that, with a mate swopping the washer while you held a bung. But a finger (and the webcam) is much better... J
  3. Quoting revilla: I'll try to measure mine tonight. I'm not sure if it will be easy to get a tape measure straight from one side to the other but I'll see if I can measure anything meaningful. I will try to measure the actual DD length (i.e. between the inner edges of the ears) and the length including the thickness of the ears too.Could this be done by dropping plumb lines to the ground and measuring between the marks on the ground? Jonathan
  4. *arrowup* *arrowup*I think that power and torque at the wheel at any given road speed carry the same information... it's when you vary eg transmission ratios that they carry different information. Jonathan
  5. As above. Don't forget you can call AA/ RAC whatever if you're a member. Hope you get something out of the day. Jonathan
  6. As above, but please confirm that you have 12V between where you've connected it and earth. Jonathan
  7. Just finished reassembling. The tool was perfect. Conflicting advice on sense of thread repair. Couldn't find the replacement part (RH crank, spider and spindle) from Shimano and the whole kit (inc rings and bottom bracket) was €72 or more. Easier to find the version without a chainguard. Local bike dealer agreed to split a set and sold me just the bit I needed for £30, so I kept the old chainguard with the old outer ring. So, thanks to Warlands Cycles in Oxford, and thanks to all of you. Jonathan
  8. Multimeters: 1 It's worth buying one that has audible continuity testing. 2 Probes with a small spring clip make life easier. Jonathan
  9. *arrowup* *arrowup*Agreed. It might also be worth repeating the rev test a few more times: is it a randomly intermittent fault rather than being linked to the engine speed? SM25T's approach should reveal that anyway. Jonathan Edited by - Jonathan Kay on 26 Jun 2013 08:06:24
  10. 21mm crow foot wrench for £10.75 (I use an adjustable wrench) Jonathan
  11. Quoting the_village_idiot: However, you do raise a good point- it surprises me that it's not yet cost effective to filter and reuse oil for less intense purposes. Are there any sectors in which this is done? Aviation, truck fleets, F1... ? Jonathan
  12. Paul: Flushing: yes, just that. Shouldn't think you need a whole fill to flush. Disposal: Ethylene glycol is poisonous, do the Council offer an approved method? It's usually described on their website. Testing the temperature sensor: yes, that sounds right to me. The way you tested it already excludes most other simple faults. 13. It sounds to me as if you need to do two things first: 1 Find out why the fan isn't running when the system is hot: it works when jumped so is it the sensor or the wiring that is't working?? 2 Flush the system and refill with approved coolant. Jonathan
  14. *arrowup* *arrowup*Duff link, try this Jonathan
  15. "Wet and dry" is fine abrasive "sandpaper" that can be used with water removing the debris. (It probably doesn't contain sand or paper but that's not important right now.) Jonathan
  16. ... and they've just appeared. Now I'm not sure whether the 16:54 test used a page where there were some sigs. Doh! The most likely explanation is that one of those three interventions did the trick. Jonathan
  17. Not fixed by restarting the browser, deleting the BlatChat cookie or emptying the caches. Jonathan Edited by - Jonathan Kay on 21 Jun 2013 16:54:00
  18. I can't see sigs although they are On in my profile. I've tried toggling the settings and that does help. I'll play with the cache later. Safari on OS X Does anyone else have this problem? Thanks Jonathan
  19. I'm sure you're right but I have "Show Signatures" ticked in my profile and can't see anything, (Safari on OS X)... ... just toggled that setting "Off" then "On" and I still don't see them. Does anyone else have this problem with seeing sigs? :-( Thanks Jonathan Edited by - Jonathan Kay on 21 Jun 2013 16:09:23
  20. That's what I do for me, as opposed to the passenger. :-) Jonathan
