After posting, I checked. (I know, wrong order.) It looks as if all the ones sold in the UK were 4 door, and there were a few with 2 doors sold elsewhere.

Agree about the gold/ bronze.
Four door version was produced later. PROBABLY WRONG: SEE BELOW.

Try searching the Web for "belt overspool".
Are they new and where did you buy them? If they are new I wouldn't open them up but would talk to the vendor.
Jonathan
I don't think there's a Yes/No answer to that. (Note topical reference.)
Have a look at this thread, and Guy's and others' words of wisdom.

Have you got a part number?
Have you tried Google Images? The top link leads to quite a lot of exploded diagrams.

Quoting SM25T: Sump clearance on the 'Ring' ... sounds like a medical query !Every time I see the Subject I start thinking about lowered floors...

Does it look from the outside as if you are getting full travel on the valve?
Lots of reports in the archives of some leakage through the valve even when it's "closed". Are you sure that it wasn't hot when closed before you reversed them?
The direction shouldn't matter, but here's another example where it was said to.
Suggestion that you can use one off an old Golf.

PS: Quoting Juju: ... plastic metal (if ever there was an oxymoron...).Hmmm... is that an oxymoron or not? The derivation and current scientific meaning of plastic is something like able to be shaped/ keeps its shape.
