  1. You've got the point about clearance already. I use rubber nuts/ well nuts to hold bits like the jack and tools in place in the engine bay. Some of them come out when I remove the screw. You could glue them in place. Jonathan
  2. I'll leave you to discuss anti-roll bars. "A fat tyre putting down more rubber in its footprint does in theory have more mechanical grip, all other things being equal." But, other things (weight, tyre pressure) being equal a wider tyre doesn't have a bigger contact patch, it's just a different shape. (The illusion may occur because it's easier to see the width of the tyre than the length in contact.) This is true across the sum of the tyres at all times (disregarding hills and squat) but the distribution of contact area between the tyres might be affected, depending on camber, compliance etc. (This isn't anything to do with the relation between contact area and grip, which is genuine and not adequately described by classical friction.) Jonathan
  3. I see what you mean. I'd just assumed the other way. How can we tell the difference... private mail the apparent sender? Jonathan
  4. Several today, including underfloor heating. Haven't seen this before. Jonathan
  5. Well done. Most people who use conditioning chargers fit a "cigar lighter" socket under the dash in front of the passenger side. That can be used for charging the battery (without removing the bonnet) and to power 'phones, satnav devices, inspection lamps etc. If you want to do it that way there are lots of details in the archives. Do you have a battery master switch and would you like USB power? Jonathan
  6. Fascinating. Thanks x2. Jonathan
  7. Is it oily? Do these engines have a crankcase breather into the inlet side somewhere? Jonathan
  8. When stationary or driving straight. But when the car corners the tyre scrubs and rolls with the ground. Thanks. So what's the difference between the tyre contact areas of narrow and wide wheels when cornering or rolling? Jonathan
  9. Thanks for all the improvements. I think my revised highest priorities are: Searching. It isn't currently searching everything and it needs filters. Supporting quotes from previous posts. Allowing my client-side spelling checker to work. (OS X Safari.)Jonathan
  10. Its contact patch is larger... ... only if the pressure is lower. If the pressure is the same the contact area will be the same, but a different shape. (Ignoring the extra weight of bigger wheels and tyres.) Jonathan
  11. :-) Lots of family in Chile, but still no relation. Jonathan
  12. Sorry to hear that. Does the dimmer have any statement of working range of lamp power? Which regulation is the problem? Thanks Jonathan
  13. More in this thread. It's a good idea to test the effect of both Return and Shift-Return and to add the browser and OS. Jonathan
  14. Paul: Do you have a rule of thumb for the factor of wire rating over nominal current? Thanks Jonathan
  15. For a direct feed I'd have a fuse on the battery side of the panel so that it works if the wire shorts where it goes through the panel. Jonathan
  16. Do you want an accessory socket and/or charging socket in the dash at the same time? Jonathan
  17. Thanks, Phil. Now on my present list. Jonathan
  18. I don't know anything definitive and Hillier doesn't mention it but that appears to be common. "Look at the bottom of the speedometer face for the numbers 940, 960, 1000, or 1020. These numbers are the number of revolutions the speedometer cable must turn in one mile of travel. Your speedometer may or may not show a number. Most speedometer (sic) from 1965 on use 1000." Jonathan
  19. Thanks A photo with the lights on! :-) Jonathan
  20. Using Shift-Return: Line 1 LIne 2 Line 3 Jonathan
  21. New lines now working, but I'm getting double line spacing on each one. (Safari, OS X). Jonathan
  22. Line 1 Line 2 Line 3 Safari OS X Jonathan
  23. As TomB says. Photos next to an untreated 7? What's the nominal current that youre taking through that alternator terminal? Does anyone know if there might be a problem there, or the nominal current for a non-LED indicator bulb for comparison? You could easily add a relay if there is a potential problem.Jonathan
