  1. According to the archives it's normal. I'd clean it and top-up and carry on. But it will be interestng to see how much oil it takes... Jonathan
  2. Traditional nail polish remover is based on acetone, which will remove most paints. Modern stuff is much less aggressive (which is why it doesn't work as well on nails). There's a long list of solvents I'd try before acetone. Jonathan
  3. :-), but have another look... Jonathan
  4. Can you borrow a timing light, either the in-line or clamp-on (Snap-On) type which will show whether you have a spark on each plug when you crank the engine. I didn't know that clamp-on testers existed. Difficulty in testing the HT side has sparked a lot of discussions recently, and there may be others who are currently suffering. What's the cheapest that that you would consider buying... and are there kind Members who would lend one? Thanks Jonathan
  5. Have you already cut through them with dental floss or similar to remove the plate? After that I'd try a thumb nail or credit card to get under the residue. If that fails then a gentle chemical cleaner such as this. Usual warning about trying it somewhere obscure first. Jonathan PS: There are lots of different products labelled "Sikaflex" and this assumes you used something similar to the rest of us.
  6. Did you find this picture and does "Type 2" look like yours? http://www.brise.co.uk/images/D/image-04.jpg Where are the two brown wires? I don't think the relay issue is relevant to what you are doing. Jonathan
  7. Do you have any diagrams or manuals for it? And did you buy a connector thing with the alternator? Jonathan
  8. however I note scouring the wiring diagram that the feed for the rad fan is a switched live and runs past the point the other alternator connections exit the loom. So probably the best way is to splice a connection in the vicinity to that switched live to feed the alternator as it is intended. Sounds good. Does that come from a relay in your car? Thoughts about fuse ratings? Have a guess and carry some spares... Jonathan
  9. I'll use the Search function but don't hold out much hope. It's not too hard to find the thread, but the link to the diagram is U/S. I've activated a back channel... But if it's only for emergencies I'd carry a jump wire or the components thereof and apply it when needed. Jonathan
  10. And why it saves so much time to measure the battery voltage at rest, idle and during cranking. This comes up repeatedly. So why the reluctance*? I can guess at two possibilities: the cost of a multimeter (around £12) and lack of familiarity with how to deploy it in combat... Glad it's all fixed. Jonathan * :-)
  11. There's a diagram in the archives which shows how to do this with a diode to enable you to keep the built-in switching. Have a search and tell us if you can't find it. Do you want an indicator on the dash as well? (There's also a get-you-home tale which isn't the one you want.) But why do you want to do this: what's the advantage over the usual set-up? Jonathan
  12. Private Mail unable to be sent. You need to tell Shaun. Send me a Private Mail if you haven't got his email address. Happy New Year Jonathan
  13. Oh well, in that case: what's the battery voltage at rest, during cranking and at idle? Jonathan
  14. Do you want rubber or sliicone? Jonathan PS: This question is not a trailer for this year's film of the book. ;-)
  15. ... if I could retro-fit a spare wheel carrier on the back... There's a discussion in the archives but I can't remember the outcome. Jonathan
  16. I'd suspect bad earths and/or bad connections in the bulb holder. I'd trace those with the meter looking for 12V at the feed to the bulb holder and continuity from the bulb holder to a good earth. Jonathan
  17. Did you solve this? Thanks Happy New Year Jonathan
  18. Which type of LSD? Jonathan PS: There's a vast amount of discussion on this in the archives.
  19. If you don't get an answer here I suggest you email Darren at Caterham. Happy New Year Jonathan
  20. For road use I'm very glad I have a heater. Some K series (and some others) have problems with cooling systems. But at any moment the vast majority don't, and there are well-tried solutions for those who do. I wouldn't worry about that aspect. Happy New Year Jonathan
  21. !!! Workarounds: Create the text offline and paste it in. Submit and "save" the photos one at a time. These shouldn't be necessary but they might save you time and frustration. Jonathan
  22. Sometimes just a second pair of eyes is needed. Where abouts are you? There might be a local member nearby who can take a look. Agreed. This is a staggeringly powerful approach to finding and fixing faults. See also medicine. Jonathan PS: Always worth testing those voltages at rest and "cranking"...
