  1. Is that a subtle (early) 911 plug, elie? :-) Jonathan
  2. A lot of the Evans claims rely on the existence and effects of local boiling. I don't think this happens to any significant extent in most 7 engines in usual operation. One of the reasons for this scepticism is the lack of evidence presented by Evans. Engines probably run hotter (as stated by Evans) because of the lower thermal capacity than water or water and ethylene glycol. I haven't seen any measurements of pressure in the liquid coolant. Some of the benefits claimed on the old website depended on this. Again I don't understand why Evans don't present any data on this. There may be a reduction of pressure in the gas space (compared to water or water and ethylene glycol) but that's a different matter. Jonathan PS: I'm recirculating the arguments in the multiple threads on this, but it is coolant... :-)
  3. How big is the current mirror, and how high is it on the screen? Would getting it a bit higher help? Good range at CBS. There's a recent discussion of which mirrors suck and which don't (it's the other way round, of course, for members in the USA). That would probably give you the most choice of positions. Have you looked at mirrors on the stanchions or leading edges of the doors... and you'll get several answers that one in the middle isn't needed, I would find that difficult. Jonathan
  4. This should narrow it down... and according to the Assembly Guide it's item 2. Jonathan
  5. AMENDED: I was thinking of only using adhesive when I wrote this. ... On adhesives... I suggest you read these threads: 1, 2, 3. They include several different recommendations and experiences (including mine) and one very interesting question. But I think the most important factors are preparing the stay and making a tube of sticky stuff around it rather than a contact patch. Jonathan
  6. Agreed, Andrew. Glad it's fixed, callumskeat. And I'm sorry you didn't get all the advice you wanted. IMHO this will be a lot better when we get technical wikis to accumulate the knowledge from the forums. Jonathan

Thanks. I assume the higher viscosity at the hot end is because they know the engines will be hotter on the track and the other oil would get too thin. I have no idea why they have recommended different viscosities at the cold end, but it might be due to what was available at some time rather than what was needed. Jonathan

Glasgow: What engine are we talking about, and what are the two recommendations? Thanks Jonathan
  9. I'd look asap for some A021Rs while they can still be bought for legal use on the road. And have a look at this thread. Jonathan PS: Where are you, please?

Because different engines need different viscosity lubricant. Factors include oil pumping system and clearance on crucial bits like bearings. Too little viscosity and it doesn't lubricate, too much and it doesn't get there. Jonathan
  11. Welcome. Please could you tell us what size wheels. (Some are only available in certain sizes. And read the archives with care: there have been some recent changes in what ranges are available.) Jonathan (now on A021Rs)
  12. Two updates. After some admirable persistence we know the following: "Well, I had a long chat yesterday with a charming gentleman from Evans (UK). In summary: Evans do not use OAT inhibitors (including 2-EHA) in their waterless coolants, due to the need for solubility in non-aqueous solvents He was unable to say (for IP and commercial reasons) what inhibitors they did use, but explained that the formulation differed according to the type of engine the coolant was designed for For old engines (with a high brass/copper/iron content) he recommended Vintage Cool, provided that the engine has a coolant pump (that is, not a thermo-siphon design) to cope with the higher viscosity Evans coolants are fully compatible with, and do not harm, silicone hoses, seals etc (claim based on extensive testing)"And Evans' UK website has been completely redesigned. The biggest difference I can find is that the claim for increased engine power seems to have gone. This may be related to the following from the Advertising Standards Authority: After consideration by the ASA of complaints received, the following companies and organisations agreed to amend or withdraw advertising without the need for a formal investigation: Hydra Technologies Ltd t/a Evans Cooling Systems UK 28 January 2015. Jonathan
  13. I use Comma DOT 5.1. I have no idea if it's better or worse than anything else. I'd like a harder feel. There's a vast amount on this in the archives, including "DOT 4 v DOT 5.1" and specific comments on Castrol products. I can't draw any conclusions. Jonathan
  14. Toothbrush? Nylon brush on a Dremel? Jonathan
  15. When was it last changed? Jonathan
  16. There are almost certainly brighter LEDs available. Could you add a photo? Can you expose the switches and lamps? And what sort of connector is there that allows the wheel to be removed? Would it give access to a probe? Jonathan
  17. Here's the previous thread. Jonathan
  18. :-) Why is there any remaining gunk? Jonathan PS: And did you roll the can under the sump?
  19. I think this was discussed recently, but I can't find it... yet. How about a neat incision parallel to an edge to allow access, spray contact adhesive and a cushion used as a press to keep it down until it's stuck? If you don't want to do it yourself have a word with SFBS and Oxted Trimming. (We have a member at Oxted.) Jonathan
  20. I'd take it off again, have a good look, and check the fittings with it off. Where are you? Is it the same as this one? If so it's Vauxhall part 90284952, and a quick search for that suggests it's available in both the UK and the USA. If not I'd be happy to post one, unless there's a better way... You'll also need seals etc. Jonathan
  21. I'm out of canisters, but there are some bags left over, both black (with the partitions for tools) and red. Pictures on this page. Red bag: £3.71 each Black bag: £4.59 each Envelope (non-optional) to hold a lot of bags: £0.24 Postage: £2.80 per envelope, regardless of exactly what's in it. Anyone interested? Jonathan
  22. Which gearbox, and is it all factory standard? But you'll end up turning and counting... Jonathan
  23. Titon will make them whichever way and length and handedness you like. Very happy with mine, bought through Prima. Jonathan
  24. I've always thought that beefing up the fan might be worth trying. Jonathan
