  1. Thanks, everyone. Oiled and tightened from here on. Mine is muzzle-loading only: I don't think the shanks can come out the other way past the spring and pivot. Jonathan
  2. Glad it's working better. Please can someone explain about the restriction bit. But here's the tough one... how about keeping the position of the tank and the filling level, and changing just one thing: the presence of the restrictor. That could add a lot of information. Jonathan
  3. Is that because connections to the live post touch the edge of the bracket? Thanks Jonathan
  4. While we're waiting for a clever explanation of what's different on and off the jacks... Check discs for damage and gravel Check for cable ties or handbrake cable catching something that rotates (that one could be different with the suspension loaded or not) Check play in diff and prop shaft UJs Use a piece of wood as a stethoscope (or a clinical stethoscope) to help locate the noise. There's a notorious problem with gravel in the rails or under the seat, but your description doesn't sound like that. Jonathan

I noticed you didn't get any responses. I live in a village and the disturbance from bikes and cars with very noisy exhausts on public roads has one of the most detrimental effects on our quallity of life. And there aren't many of them. But there may be a wider point. Future restrictions on unusual cars may be more likely and more stringent the more people they annoy. Jonathan PS: if anyone doesn't know the area the Ridgeway E of Avebury is a great walk with an amazing history. PPS: :-)
  6. If the car was originally a Fireplace... Autocorrect, or a comment that comes right from the hearth? :-) Jonathan
  7. Good to know. Thanks Jonathan
  8. Can someone explain the 1 and 4 issue, please? Thanks Jonathan
  9. Is yours like this? Jonathan PS: So at least it's undone now? :-)
  10. When would you use an analogue meter? I've got my old lab imitation AVO in the garage and I don't think it will ever be used in anger again... Jonathan PS: What I'd really like is an HT tester module... and an oscilloscope.
  11. I chose a PVR 25 and bent the existing strap. But if I were doing it again I'd buy a battery with a new matching box from their shop on eBay. Then I'd mount it flat and put tools or the jack or something on top. Check the type of terminal is right for your leads, and I needed a longer fat red lead to the alternator. Jonathan
  12. Agreed. I recommend the Draper 60792. And treat yourself to an additional pair of leads with croc clips. Jonathan
  13. Would I be right in assuming all is OK at the gearbox end and the problem is most likely with the speedo itself? Probably. There are three recommended repairers... and members have been pleasantly surprised by the prices*. One is another manufacturer and might not do VDOs. Check the archives and let me know if you can't find them. Jonathan * It's interesting when there are good experiences of all the options. See also silicone hoses.
  14. A duff starter relay isn't the only cause*... but what did you do to yours? If you have replaced the relay I'd start (!) with disconnecting, inspecting, cleaning and reconnecting all the relevant leads. Then I'd measure the voltage across the battery at rest, while trying to crank and at 3,000 rpm. Jonathan * And neither is anything else.
  15. What John said: is your sensor near a wheel or on the gearbox? Jonathan
  16. I wrecked a drill bit on a rivet that snapped in the nozzle. But I am fully aware of what caused that part of yesterday's entertainments. It was one of those jobs that whatever I did dug me deeper in the hole I had created, with an ever-increasing collection of tools scattered around me. And it all started with thinking about a holiday... Thanks, martyn. I'll try that. Jonathan
  17. Reassembly is the reverse of careful fiddling? :-) Jonathan
  18. Top of a valve assembly? What's the make and model? Jonathan
  19. Advice from the experts please. I was doing some light pop rivetting yesterday, and as often happens, the retained bit (? shank, ? stem) wouldn't release from the jaws. It's a Stanley hand-operated thing with two jaws. Well, actually it's two of them that both do it sometimes. I got the second because I complained that the first had this problem... as do many others according to a widely-used search engine. I'm now highly skilled at removing the thing (spray oil, mount a nut in a vice and press the jaws down on the nut so that gravity helps the thing drop through the hole in the middle.) But why does it happen and how do you prevent it? Thanks Jonathan
  20. According to the table my official starting point should be 039558 but my speedo is reasonably accurate and set to 008786. That ratio is intriguingly close to 4.5. But nowadays I'd always set these from speed measured by GPS rather than an estimate of circumference. Jonathan
  21. The thread about diagnosing faults with the electronic speedo sensor, and a recommended modification. Jonathan
  22. If you have any doubts about the oil: full oil and filter change asap. See SM25T's questions and comments above on type of system and how to check level. Jonathan PS: We'll get to that battery when you've solved everything else! :-)
