  1. Is there some ambiguity between "jump starter" and "charger"? Jonathan
  2. I don't know what those big jumpstart packs that garages use do but you can imagine it's more than just a parallel battery. I think they're just high-capacity batteries in jumping mode but they may include sensing circuits. So no difference from anything domestic apart from capacity. I don't think they will lift the voltage above alternator levels because that might wreck any car electronics as well as cooking the battery. (They often include 24V output but that's not really a potential difference.) Jonathan
  3. Is there still a question for car/bike use about it being desirable to have a specialised control system? Thanks Jonathan
  4. Thanks, Nigel. I've seen that explanation but I don't understand what's happening at the electronics level. Jonathan
  5. Morgan - A Suitable Car for Tehran? http://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/624/cpsprodpb/FF08/production/_83788256_rkot.png Luxury shopping in Iran: BBC News article. Jonathan
  6. ... depends which way the wind's blowing! :-) Jonathan PS: Although I've never understood that effect...
  7. It isn't clear why some have problems and others don't. For the initial fill have you found the stuff about the radiator first, another bleeding tee in the heater hose and vigorous massging? Once mine was full and happy I'd top up the expansion tank without even jacking up the car. But it never uses any. Jonathan
  8. Same problem here: OS X + Safari, not resolved by logging out and in. Jonathan
  9. Were you using it frequently before this happened? Any changes made that might have affected anything? Jonathan
  10. Interesting numbers. If the dynamic range of the alternator is greater than that of the engine then you should be OK... if you can get the precisely sized pulley ratios. But no-one has added quite enough data yet. We need: Intended idle speed (which will prevent discharge under high load) Maximum engine speed Minimum alternator speed to generate enough oomph Maximum permitted alternator speed.Taking Shaun's dilemma... if those are 1,000, 8,500, 2,000,18,000 (rather than 20,000) then it should be just OK as the dynamic range for the alternator is 9 and for the engine is 8.5. Anyone got all 4 numbers to check? What's your maximum engine speed, Mark? Jonathan PS: There is a workaround... a variable idle speed...
  11. It does sound like a fault within the speedo. Did you find the thread with the links to the three repairers? Jonathan
  12. Which? didn't compare chargers. How many places do you need? My most recent buy was a 4-place Chipmunk that charges either AA or AAA in any slot, seems OK. 7dayshop is often cheapest. Jonathan
  13. Panasonic Eneloop top-scoring Best Buy AA in Which?, July 2015. :-) Jonathan
  14. Which dash (could you add a photo?) and which sensor? Jonathan
  15. Yes, with some experience of particular models: 1, 2, 3. I'm surprised this hasn't been more widely discussed or adopted. Jonathan
  16. Is it a really big electrical diagnostic service? :-) Jonathan
  17. ...recently changed the coolant (last summer) and topped up again last month after reseating the top rail and noticed lots of gold fleck in my coolant, I am running Comma Red Xtreme G30 in a K series. Is this the hoses, nomal for this coolant, or possibly something else? I haven't heard of that. What colour are the hoses and where were they from? Can you get some of the flecks onto filter paper? (Thinking about copper grease, metal wear... ) Jonathan
  18. Yes if you blip the throttle it'll charge but as soon as it goes back to idle the charging stops (volts go back to 12. I think that there are some reports that blipping causes the voltage to stay higher than it was even when the speed has dropped down. I've never understood that effect. Interesting that the window of success is so tight on some cars. So far we have the suggestions that this is caused by the need to avoid overspeed beacuse the dynamic range is so high, and by the need for the fan to be on so often. Any other ideas? Does anyone make a speed-limited pulley? Jonathan
  19. Just been out to check. Same engine and same hoses. The J pipe between the thermostat housing and the metal pipe was by far the hardest to fit. Usual approach: lots of lubrication with silicone grease, do the difficult end first, and check who's within earshot. But it came out alright in the end, without a kink. So I agree with SM25T: fiddle till it's right, both in rotation and longitudinally. Jonathan
  20. I'd try Road and Race in Shoreham, probably 01959 525105, and Redline. There is a third party supplier of the whole assembly somewhere in the recent archives. And I'd still like a diagram of all the parts... please, someone? Jonathan
  21. There are some figures in this thread, including the maximum permissible speed of the alternator. I'd check that end as well as you think about the pulley size. What voltage do you get at 1,000 rpm? Has anything changed recently? Jonathan
  22. I have an unproved suspicion that some kangarooing in some 7s is sometimes caused by underdamping of the whole of the control loop including the human bits as well as the pedal, cable, throttle springs, airflow lag etc. Does it decrease if you add some friction by leaning your leg against the cockpit? Jonathan
  23. Has the pedal height changed? Jonathan
  24. Have you had a look at the curves stored in dyno-plot, linked from this thread? Jonathan
  25. Thanks, I see what you mean. If the bracket were proud of the battery in the risky area I'd cut it back. (And follow Paul's other advice.) Jonathan
