    Fuel Gauge

With the gauge plugged in, I'm getting 12.7 V on the green terminal, 2.8 V on the green/black sender terminal and earth on the earth terminal, but nothing on the gauge - the needle remains at rest on the left. Is all of that measured at the sender? Sounds to me as if that's consistent with no connection to the gauge as well as a faulty gauge. All other instruments OK? Several possible lines of investigation while I look for the diagram: Check the wires are connected to the gauge. Check the voltage at the gauge end of the sender wire (with it disconnected from the gauge). Does it match the sender end? Ditto resistance on the sender wire (disconnect from gauge and sender and use a length of mains cable to get to both ends). Disconnect all wires from the gauge and put a fused 12V across it and see if it responds. Jonathan
  2. I don't remember those being discussed in my time. If you can't find replacements how about resilvering eg 1, 2? Jonathan
  3. My current view is that there are HPC cars and BDR cars which are not HPC. Have you got access to a copy of Chris Rees' "Caterham Sevens"? The introduction dates and production numbers are on page 196 and 197. That supports what you say. My current interest is to identify whether there any differences between my car and the HPC do that I can answer that question both for anyone who asks and for me. The best description of each model that I have is in his 'the Magnificent 7". Separate sections and identifying features for the "1600 BDR", the "1700 BDR" and the "HPC 1700". If you haven't got access to those send me a Private Mail. Jonathan
  4. Namrick. Jonathan PS: Have you found Shaun's bolt list and Charles' Fastener Packs?
  5. Thanks. Do you have an external home page of contents so a single link could point to that and not need changing? Jonathan
  6. Great piece of work. Thanks. Are the pdfs already pointed to from a static page on the Club site other than the Forums? How about outlinking them from the Bolt List page? Jonathan
  7. Which type of neck and cap? John Vine has a copy of the related Workshop Notice. Jonathan
  8. With that good cranking it sounds unlikely to be the problem but what's the battery voltage while cranking? What's your coil set-up? Is there now any connection between the fuel pump and the ECU? Check ECU fuse and earth. Jonathan
  9. Morning. At the moment the two options would seem to be a thread in a forum (such as this) or a Blog. How would either of those stack up against what you'd like? And what would be better? Thanks Jonathan
  10. Agree about the need for neatness in switchgear. Using this however would mean that the flick-wipe function would be neither fused (you could add an in-line fuse) nor ingition-switched (it would work with the key out) which seems a bit messy. Why couldn't you run a fused supply, either ignition switched or not according to taste, to the single pole version and then pick up on the existing inputs to the wiper control unit and the headlamp relay? Thanks Jonathan PS: Nearly added a "just" there. ;-) PPS: If you forgot which way round it worked you could wipe your windscreen when trying to communicate with other drivers, as traditionally performed with the stalks in unfamiliar cars. :-)
  11. How many bolts have you removed so far? Jonathan
  12. How about an A-Off-B spring loaded to centre switch with the headlamp flash on one way and a single wipe on the other? Jonathan
  13. Did you find this thread with the Big Red and (probably) Ford part numbers? Jonathan
  14. John Vine measured some. Jonathan
  15. Is it this unlabelled object? If you're not sure I'll work through the wiring colours. 1998 1800 K, RHD. Jonathan
  16. I used the Pipercross cleaning kit on the cylindrical type on my 1800 K The bottles are smaller than you might expect. It wasn't very dirty and there's enough left for next time. Instructions as Paul posted. Jonathan
  17. It depends on the age of the vehicle (and whether it's used at night!). MoT Inspection Manual, section 1.4. Jonathan
  18. I don't know if it's in the manual, but there a couple of threads that might help you find a copy: 1 2. Jonathan
  19. It's cranking, you've got sparks and you've got fuel. Did you disconnect the plug leads at any point in that tidying? Jonathan
  20. The start of the saga, including someone offering helpful advice on setting the sensor... ;-) Jonathan
  21. I think he's done 2 from a previous thread... I can't explain the blowing fuses from an intermittent opening of an earth. But did you ever try replacing the fuse without touching the sensor? Doesn't sound like that heat-related wiring saga (can anyone find it?) but how about intermittent moisture causing a feed to short? Jonathan
  22. That's a very big number of replacements: did it ever work perfectly? Is it the sort for which there's a factory advisory note on earthing differently? Any relation to engine temperature: there was a fascinating report of something like that... I'd go for the gap and try adjusting it regardless of what it was before. Is yours the sort where the sensor unit flickers when it's working? Jonathan
