  1. Good experiment. Hope it works, but I'm sceptical so far... Ditto Velcro. I'm also surprised that 7s don't generally need something stronger, particularly on the end ones, eg: http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/content/images/thumbs/0021602_long-black-turnbuckle-fasteners_150.jpeg SFBS use directional poppers for extra strength on the half-hood straps just behind the door. Jonathan
  2. What ECR says. Both ways. Get the crud out, no need for clever chemistry (until it's back in the car with appropriate coolant). Jonathan
  3. My first comment was too short. It doesn't sound as if you have a major problem. I have a pretty standard 1800. At the rebuild Ratrace asked what it was used for and on hearing it was road and occasional trackdays changed it to an 82° thermostat. That seems to work fine. Except that it runs too cold in winter on motorways etc. I haven't drilled a hole in the thermostat but would be happy to if I had any problems. But I do warm it up rather gently. Jonathan
  4. Sounds OK to me. Does it warm up enough on motorways in cold weather? (Mine doesn't and a blind is beckoning.) Jonathan
  5. Tape over it. Easy to adjust by adding layers, and easy to remove, (On my mother's Stiletto there were little translucent eyelids which worked very well.) Jonathan
  6. Interesting comment on the need to close the heater valve completely. Hope that helps. By the time I was relying on evaporative cooling (see Spitfires and the predecessors) I'd be looking at getting more ambient air flowing onto the hot bits of the cockpit. Jonathan
  7. Manual as above. This site will support your blog. Have you found the Guides and the new offers of equipment on loan? AFAIK other's build tips are scattered around the forums and blogs. Some of those will save you a lot of time. Jonathan
  8. Thanks. Any offers to lend these when needed? Jonathan
  9. Is it in Shaun's bolt list? Jonathan
  10. That might be the cause. Fortunately there is a relay available that seems to work with all types of bulbs. Swapping to that is probably the easiest solution. Let us now if you can't find it in the archives, Jonathan
  11. Very interesting. Is there consensus that it's OK to disconnect an oxygen sensor for a short time for diagnosis? Jonathan
  12. Have you had it out to see how hard it would be to dismantle? If I couldn't do it I'd go to one of the specialist speedometer repairers. There are three with good reputations in the archives. Jonathan
  13. Oxygen sensor as another possibility? I'm not sure but I think it was recently suggested that you could disconnect that for diagnostic purposes. Check the archives. Jonathan
  14. Replaced the battery Brand new? Unlikely to be battery if that's a new one and because it happened while running. But measure battery voltage at rest, while cranking and at 3,000 rpm. Then measure battery voltage when the problem recurs. Recovery after a pause could be fuel starvation from an air lock, but running OK at high engine speed is against that. Check by removing the filler cap when it happens: does the running improve and do you hear an inwards whoosh? Check connections on feed to ECU and all earths for that and the engine: disconnect, clean, inspect and reconnect. If those don't show anything I think you're into checking the throttle position sensor and wiring. Visual inspection and wiggle the connections while we're waiting for the experts on diagnosing that. Jonathan
  15. Have you asked Stack directly? Jonathan
  16. I don't remember that... you're not thinking of shock socks? Reasons not to use silicone polish? I can't think of any. Jonathan
  17. Thanks to both of you. Great start. Any ideas from anyone on how to help make it work and keep it going? I would guess it will be mostly spotting requests in other threads and pointing to the list. Perhaps discussion with ARs would help? Jonathan
  18. Similar here. But I'd still like much better forward lighting. Jonathan

    New Build

This thread has a catchy title. What's the chance of all new builders making contact and sharing experiences here? Jonathan
  20. I may not be the best Member to advise... I'm slightly averse to thread proliferation. How about writing yours as a blog on the site AND adding comments to the New Build thread in the TechTalk forum... and encouraging all new builders to join in the latter. That will carry as many photos as you and others want to add. Have you played with adding photos yet? A large fraction of TechTalk is about upgrades... so I'd leave that at the moment. Jonathan
