  1. Given that a decent everyday wrench can achieve +/- 4% (or even +/- 3%) For common or garden varieties? That sounds very tight, is it new or across working life? Thanks Jonathan
  2. important is to unwind after every use, this way your spring will stay longer within calibration range This is widely recommended and I unload mine. But is there any evidence for it? Even an argument from plausibility? Jonathan
  3. That sounds pretty well calibrated to me. Did you check repeatability at the same time? Jonathan
  4. I know! This time it isn't that authenticity thing but a combination of laziness and there not being much in it at the hoped-for price of a preloved one... :-) Jonathan
  5. The electrician I use in Oxford is Ivor Terrill. I've been pleased with their work and they might do it or know someone. Jonathan
  6. Please can you add brake piston spreader and windback tool from me. Anyone offering a flywheel locking tool? Jonathan
  7. With the proprietary connectors! Thanks Jonathan
  8. How about rigging a new warning light system for testing? (And disconnecting all of the old one.) Jonathan
  9. martyn: Is this for a build, or a specific piece of work or just general maintenance? Have you had a look at Shaun's list, above? That will give the rough mix of types across the 7. Then I'd use Charles' fastener packs for specific tasks. I usually have an assorted set of metric bits around for other projects as well as the 7. Beware stainless steel fasteners from the point of view of strength unless you are sure what you're doing. Jonathan
  10. On the subject of reflective tape, does anyone know if this stuff is as impressive as the amazon photos suggest? Black in natural light, but reflects white - could be a no brainer to add to the roll bar. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scotchlite-Black-Reflective-Tape-20mm/dp/B00940IEU0 Just got some to play with. Looks like shiny black tape in ordinary light. Reflects as silver speckle. Here's some (left) on the roll bar next to a piece of reflective bike sticky (right) of the same size, on-axis flash: So it's nowhere near as bright as the ordinary sticky, but would clearly show the shape of the bar etc. Jonathan
  11. The one I measured at 16mm od goes to the top of the expansion tank. Jonathan
  12. I'm lost... is the RIVNUT still in the skin, and is it spinning freely? Jonathan
  13. The one I hate doing... cut the bolt flush and drill down the shank to destroy it? Jonathan
  14. A thread about threads with a contribution from a Vine can only point in ...:-) Jonathan
  15. Can't picture the access. Mole wrench on the back of the RIVNUT so that you can get counterforce there rather than on the skin? Jonathan
  16. There are others with much more experience than me. But while we're waiting... the priority must be to not damage the skin. Do you have access to the back so that you could grind the flare of the RIVNUT off? Might need a bit of cooling. Jonathan
  17. What's the female bit on that one... something like a RIVNUT? Jonathan
  18. You will need someone in the car with their foot had on the brakes too. I used a steel bar on the wheel studs and the ground. Jonathan
  19. What Paul says, but from a position of greater ignorance. If all 3 thought-to-be-good alternators show the same problem then what is the common factor? It's either the warning light system or the rest of the electrics including the car battery. It's quicker and easier to assemble a new warning light system than a safe load for the alternator that is independent of the rest of the electrics so try that first. (Although the latter isn't too hard with some thick cables and another battery.) Jonathan PS: Exemplary generosity, Andrew.
  20. I'm in Garsington, OX44 9DB, may be the nearest. 41mm socket + bar available. Let me know if you need anything else. Jonathan
