  1. Did you tell us the effect on the engine of removing the cap? Jonathan
  2. Thing is, it's said to be bad practice to put a shake proof and plain washer together. The plain washer reduces the effectiveness of the shake proof and can render it useless. I think it's necessary to distinguish between split ring washers and star washers, and for the latter the types of surfaces that are engaged. The relevant Wikipedia article has links to guidance from NASA and others, but note the uncertainty about who asserts what. Jonathan

I don't want to make a car that I feel I can't drive to its full extent without be overwhelmed. I know what you mean. See also the joy of 160s. Jonathan
  4. It isn't normal. As above. I'd also check tyre pressures, and does it track true hands off on the flat? Jonathan
  5. Check the archives... someone might lend you the tool. And possibly have a few spare pins... Jonathan
  6. I'd crimp new pins just like the originals onto the wires on the new lights. There's a source in the archives but the experts should be along soon... In the meantime have you identified and matched all the wires? Jonathan
  7. Engine coolant temperature during this? What coolant? Do you know about chemical testing for combustion products in coolant? Jonathan
  8. I have not yet drilled the hole to fit the forward exhaust mount bracket Are you using Andrew's magnet trick? Jonathan
  9. I can't seem to add photos Do you want to upload them or link to them on an external server? Forum User Guide. Jonathan
  10. I am concerned by the cable wear because the "nude" cable will continuously touch the pedal hole. Am I too worried or will it cause a premature failure ? I haven't heard that described as a problem in practice, but I'm not sure what angles people get with DIY cables. You could use a nipple with a neck that would bear on the edge of the hole in the pedal: Or you could add a tubular guide that smooths the transition. Probably easiest using bike bits. But with either you'll need to know the size of the hole in the pedal. Jonathan
  11. Thanks, John. I have the same in Advanced settings but don't remember what it used to be. I also don't understand the relation between what is set there and the actions I select for notifying email in a particular thread. Jonathan
  12. Current display is 1.167 x true. 577 to 591 is 1.024. That would take the display to 1.140 x true, or 61 mph displayed at 70 mph. Is that an electronic or mechanical speedometer? I don't know when they changed. On some (? all) electronic speedometer recalibration is a matter of pressing buttons. On factory mechanical speedometers I think the repairers can change the gearing but i'm not certain. A cheaper option is to add lines at the speeds of interest using something like Letraset. Jonathan
  13. What fraction does it currently overread, and what tyres would be on the before and after wheels? Jonathan PS: What type of speedometer... it might be easy to recalibrate.
  14. How to remove the pins from the connectors. Jonathan
  15. ... just had a look. I don't think email notifications of followed threads are being sent either. Please can someone confirm. Jonathan
  16. Please send me a Private Mail with your email address. There are suspicions of problems with Private Mail today. Please can you post here when you've sent it. Jonathan
  17. Could you add a photo of yours? Jonathan
  18. The tunnel cover moves with a little encouragement, how do you get the handbrake lever vertical ? Major adjustment ? You use the handbrake adjustment bits on the cable to make enough slack. (I think the moves are not at all intuitive but they do work.) Would you like an Assembly Guide? Jonathan PS: For prolonged use on a 7's battery you need a conditioning charger, not an old-fashioned trickle charger.
  19. Previous versions of the Assembly Guide had: 8 Attach the other end of the braided hose to the solid brake pipe coming from the transmission tunnel through the vertical aluminium panel. A plain washer should be placed between the solid brake pipe fitting and the aluminium panel and a shakeproof washer between the aluminium panel and the braided hose fitting. Jonathan PS: If you check the preceding paragraph of your Guide (concerning the other end of the flexible hose) does it have: "The rear braided hose can now be fitted. Thread the locknut onto the male union on one end of the hose then attach the braided hose to the three way union on the De Dion tube and tighten to 10 Nm. Lock into place using the locknut. The locknut supplied should not restrict the union from tightening fully." In 1998 that used to read: "If the locknut is too big and overfills the threaded space it should be replaced with a smaller one, otherwise the hose fitting will be pulled from its taper seat."
  20. What are the actual numbers showing you have exceeded the limit? I'd talk to Shaun. Jonathan
  21. How do you feel about things that are like Range Rovers rather than things that are like cars? New or used or either? Bentley? Tesla Model S? Jonathan PS: I'd love any of the current Jaguars, but the styling of the rear end of the XJ isn't quite right. PPS: And I don't think it's possible to spot in advance cars that will appreciate. ;-)
  22. You can do either. Using a chassis earth avoids another cable to the battery terminal. Jonathan
  23. Yes, there is some discussion about this in the archives, including this thread with recommended products. I'd be concerned about increasing the noise level. Jonathan
