  1. What else do you use it for? How many miles/ year? How important is grip in the wet?Jonathan
  2. Do you want to use the immobiliser? Where do you keep the car? How would a conditioning charger compare with disconnection for your purposes? Jonathan
  3. Lots in the archives, including comments on specific products. Jonathan
  4. Lidl, £34.99. Aldi, £49.99. Jonathan
  5. I've been running a Lithium battery for nearly a year now, having convinced myself that the point had come to stop theorizing and to just give it a try. Well done. Any comments on performance in cold weather, please? Thanks Jonathan
  6. Before I changed the fuse I switched the ignition on, but didn't start the engine and the red light did not illuminate. I also checked the fan and that didn't work either. Thanks. Really impressed with your hypothesis, Andrew. And I think that's consistent. Jonathan PS: Reminds me of the strange case of the false path through another lighting circuit with a bad earth.
  7. So, should I be worried the fuse blew in the first place? I wouldn't be. It's probably like Fleming's description of happenstance, but you could try warning it... Jonathan
  8. Couldn't remember how to post a picture SO I've change my profile picture to show what mines like. Forum User Guide. And I admire your ingenuity. :-) Jonathan
  9. Have you got some photos of the forward illumination of the road, please? Thanks Jonathan
  10. Well done. That lumpiness as one or two cylinders dropped out, rather than erratic speed without lumpiness, might be a useful clue for the next victim. Jonathan
  11. Well done. Did you check the behaviour of the ignition warning light before fixing the fuse? Jonathan
  12. Advice, please. The Joe Blow track pump is waiting for me to fit new seals, the Lezyne miniature track pump is just brilliant (and Highly Recommended), the little electrical pump from the Jazz works but is slow and isn't always at home, and the previously trusty Michelin double barrel foot pump is U/S. But at least I now know why: I can get a replacement hose but what can I do with that fitting? The white metal crimped end swivels freely on the yellow metal piece. And a whole new pump only costs £18. Thanks Jonathan
  13. Can you tell us the part number of the sensor? How many terminals on the sensor? How many wires go to the sensor, and what colour are they? Do you have a wiring diagram? ... You've already done the test of a forced open circuit. There's one other quick check you can do: disconnect that wire at the sensor end and short it to earth. What does the display now show? ... Edited. Just found a manual for a Stack 8130. Let me know if you'd like it. It identifies their sensors, and includes: Jonathan
  14. One other thing there is no petrol smell and the spark plug I pulled was dry. This may also point to the crank sensor/ECU but a fueling problem is possible if we assume my no spark test was a bad one. You could give it some Easy Start or similar while cranking. Jonathan
  15. I don't have a multi meter, but I think I should invest in one. Current recommendation: Draper 60792. It's worth getting some croc clips as well. Jonathan
  16. Have you changed anything recently? What's the voltage across the battery: At rest Minimum during cranking?Jonathan
  17. #5: That's a link to a PDF from text. In #3 I was talking about from a PDF or other image. Jonathan
  18. Please can you do some comparison photos of the illumination: before and after, or swap one side and compare L (with R occluded) and R (with L occluded) with fixed camera settings. Thanks Jonathan
  19. Anybody else thought of using strong small magnets? I am considering replacing the door strap poppers with magnets as I find they are such a pain to do up easily in the S3. It should be possible to use magnets for both closures - yet another winter project! Haven't seen it suggested before. Should work fine. How about trying some on their own for a bit before attaching them? Jonathan PS: I had some left over after attaching a metal lizard to the beams in our bedroom. So I put them safely away in the garage. And now I can't find them, despite repeated careful tracking with a Silva compass! :-)
  20. There's a lot in the archives on LED headlights (and driving lights (and little lights)). It would be great if someone could trawl and summarise the options. Jonathan
  21. When I was playing with the new site I discovered that images could be links. But, IIRC, I couldn't find a way to show the user that they were. Jonathan
  22. ... but the battery has the complicated charging electronics built into it... Yes. That seems to be the key. From what I can tell this type of cell is pretty tolerant, but you won't get maximum charge in without that extra control. If the batteries are at 14.4v, and the alternator is providing 14.4v, then no current is going to flow in either direction. What's this "topping charge" they're talking about? Charging curves in this article. Jonathan
