  1. Surely if I disconnect this wire then there'll be no power going to the fan then? Or do you mean by shorting it, I'll actually see if the wire is live? Edited: See warning in post #2. Cooling fans are usually wired like horns: the switch connects that side of the circuit to earth. (The live feed is on all the time.) In this case the temperature sender is that switch. It saves a wire or something. So by disconnecting the wire at the sender and shorting it to earth you complete the circuit for the fan and it should start turning. We'll get on to testing the sender later if that looks necessary... Shirley
  2. What's the battery voltage at rest and minimum during cranking? Check the fuse for the fuel pump... have you got a diagram already? Any changes made to the car recently? Jonathan
  3. As to whether or not I'm worth it, would you mind trying to convince The Boss about that. Have you checked the archives? :-) Jonathan
  4. Don't know specifically about VVCs but I think we're seeing more and more reports of overcooling on Ks. Mine does it after the engine rebuild but didn't before. Does that only happen on cold days and what thermostat do you have... and is it working? Beyond that it's a radiator blind. Jonathan
  5. Welcome. Where are you? Have you checked the coolant level? 2. Fan. Does the radiator fan fire up automatically and at what temperature? There is a fan switch on the dashboard but I'm guessing this is for a heater if there was one fitted? Yes, that switch is for the heater fan. Edited warning following subsequent comments: the next paragraph only applies to traditional circuits with a single wire to the sender. You can reassure yourself that the fan on the radiator is working by disconnecting the wire that goes to the sender and shorting it to earth. Make sure that the fan isn't going to catch you or anything else! Jonathan
  6. 1978 AFAIK you can't tell if the foam layer is still capable of doing its job by inspection or nondestructive testing. The manufacturers and retailers are clearly at risk of bias in their recommendations, but replacement at 5y or 7y are the upper limits I've seen. And that's apart from improvements in design. Because you're worth it. Jonathan
  7. "MOT manuals and special notices", contains the testing guide and inspection manuals. Jonathan
  8. ... with warm water, a toothbrush and some washing up liquid... I've never seen it studied but a detergent without a lot of added phosphate might work better than one with. Mine had flat shiny patches at nine and three o'clock and I focussed on them, working from the edges where there was texture or nap to try and tease up the suede again. Moderately successful, but there are still flat patches. Try steaming next? Jonathan
  9. Is there any reservation I should have with the 7" width? Will the medial surface move any more inboard with those? Isn't there a known clearance problem with some bit that doesn't rotate? Jonathan
  10. Cunning plan (in the Forum User Guide thread) and testing (in Testing). All comments and improvements welcome. Jonathan PS: I think that means that it's possible for all of the commercial hosts I've tried.
  11. ... by virtue of age if not miles... James Whiting told me maximum of 5y, regardless of mileage. Previous discussion. Jonathan

Not much in the archives. That probably means it isn't being encountered as a problem. Jonathan
  13. I couldn't find the length in the archives. While they're to hand please could you add the size... M5? Thanks Jonathan
  14. To the best of my knowledge: Private Mails are all getting through, despite the error message. (Assuming the recipient's mailbox isn't full!) Some external email notifications are being sent but others aren't.Jonathan
  15. I think that I've finally cracked how to show inline images served on Dropbox, if that would help. Jonathan
  16. Excellent. Back to back comparisons? What do you think of that app for Sevenry? Jonathan
  17. Will make sure I post a decent video of the noise , before and after style! Could you add the loudness measurements using an app on a smart 'phone? SPLnFFT might be the best. Jonathan
  18. I'm expecting that it would have taken a long time for the engine to come up to temp (maybe it did but I had no reference.....) and in winter maybe not hot enough. Yes, but hard to predict how big those effects would be. Can you face doing a back to back comparison? Blinded if you can find an accomplice. Jonathan PS: I think we hear more tales of overcooling than in the past.
  19. Well done: I'd want it fixed. Fortunately the other driver noticed their mistake with plenty of time to correct it and I was applying avoidance tactics in case they didn't. What a strange line the green car took: any explanation from the layout? Jonathan PS: Does the 7 always sound like that on the recording? And in real life?
  20. Can you get a blanking grommet the right size? And then punch a hole in the middle or pop and glue a little one in? Jonathan
  21. Car Builder Solutions? Rimmer Bros? eBay? Jonathan
  22. Clicking that image link leads me to a Dropbox page that requires me to log in. Jonathan
  23. They are surprisingly repairable. Jonathan
  24. But the battles weren't in vein! ;-) Jonathan
