  1. Permanent connection: Opinions and experiences seem to vary. It may be systematic difference between types of charger or types of batteries or it may be random or there may be no effect: I don't think we have any relevant data. Jonathan
  2. Yes regulations. Thanks I have to replace helmets due to regulation revisions, each helmet which no longer conforms is fine. How do you assess the ability to absorb energy? Jonathan
  3. Life of helmets There's a widely held view that the energy absorbing layer under the shell deteriorates with time regardless of knocks etc. And that it can't be assessed without destruction. Common advice is to replace every 5y or sooner, but there's a few people saying 7y. But I don't know of any studies that give answers at a high level of evidence. There's an obvious risk of bias from those who make make money out of selling them. Then there are platitudes about only being issued with one brain etc, but that doesn't add much practical advice, as opposed to anxiety. If you have intention of competing in near future, then that is a different matter altogether. Do you mean solely about regulations? Jonathan
  4. Is your battery topuppable? ... I've just had something similar with a CTEK MXS 5.0 and Powervamp PVR25 battery. Couldn't get past desulphating stage on its own. Could after charging with a dumb trickle charger. I decided the battery was trying to tell me something and replaced it rather than continue the conversation somewhere less convenient than the garage. Jonathan PS: Desulphating pills are available but even if the cells aren't sealed I wouldn't bother.
  5. I've checked the Rover service and overhaul notes, the VVC notes, the Haynes manual and my Elise bumf. I can't find anything beyond the various timing belt tensioners. But my paperless Haynes manual for the Rover 214 seems to have Chapter 1 missing: that might be worth checking. Is there anything special about where the bolt goes? If not and BlatChat is defeated you're left with engine specialists or... the standard torque setting for the size of bolt. Good luck Jonathan
  6. With those TBs is it easy to remove the fuel injector rail so that the injectors are just pointing upwards into the air? You could then see if they are spraying at all during craning (in a well vented place, preferably outdoors). Agree with the value of discovering this. Don't now if it's feasible. Jonathan PS: "Cranking"... unless you're thinking of Heron heads. :-)
  7. I'll check the Rover service manual tonight. Jonathan
  8. 5 year old helmet that needs some work? I'd consider a new one. Jonathan
  9. Can't find the torque setting in the archives. Does it come from another vehicle so that we could check that documentation? Jonathan
  10. It's slippery but ethylene glycol is sweet*. Some proprietary antifreezes have a bitter additive, but I don't know how many. Jonathan * And toxic.
  11. If I were fitting a new top plate I'd add a filler hole. Jonathan
  12. Well done. I was about to recommend adding a lot of sensors to monitor what's happening in the different phases but that might not be necessary... Looking forward to the "back in the pits" data. Jonathan
  13. Have you spoken to Redline? Jonathan
  14. The batch size has been decreasing and I wonder whether the market is full. But then we do have lots of new Members... Details including pictures and prices in the first post in this thread. Any interest out there? Jonathan
  15. Thanks, John. TOOL TUBES! That space is crying out for a few! :-) Jonathan
  16. ... fuel pump is running. Connector now seperated and spayed with contact cleaner - sprayed twice and no difference. It will still not start from cold. So squirted fuel into the throttle bodies and it starts first press of the button. That helps narrow it down. I'd still want to know the ECU wasn't dropping out. What's the modern equivalent of pulling the fuel line off and seeing if fuel is pumped out? Jonathan PS: The connector has two seperate levers that both have to be fully pressed in and the connector then comes apart. Simple when you know how. ... and have the confidence to use a bit more force on the release levers! :-)
  17. Very neat, John. What's the device between the foam filter and the washer bottle? Jonathan PS: And where are the tool tubes? :-)
  18. If the minimum voltage during cranking is <10.5 V please could you also tell us the voltage with everything off and at 3,000 rpm (if it ever starts). ... ... i have the battery hooked up to a trickle charger... Traditional trickle charger or conditioning charger? If the former beware of overcharging, especially with the little batteries that most of us have in 7s. Jonathan
  19. Put your headlights on and crank. Do the lights dim out? I agree about the desirability of that test. But a multimeter only costs £15, will make you a lot more confident in the result, and enable you to share it with us! ... Yes, there are several reports of terminally duff new batteries. I don't know the root cause. ... i have tried rocking the car in gear to see if its stuck Post #2 assumes it wasn't... (I had a Minor 1000 convertible with a spanner in the glove box specifically to turn the end whenever this happened.) Jonathan
  20. Convenient time to add sealing and protection gunk if you think that's a good idea. Jonathan
  21. It worked normally for a time after the new battery was fitted? Have a good look at the starter and give it a wiggle. What's the battery voltage while cranking? Disconnect, inspect and clean the contacts of all the relevant thick wires including the earths, and the connections to both terminals of the battery.Jonathan
  22. What's the battery voltage while cranking? Can you hear the fuel pump? Can you add a photo of the connector you want to open? Jonathan
  23. Bolts and spacer, and tensioner. Jonathan
  24. Have you still got some of the residue, and if you have can you test it for solubility in water to check it is oily and not merely mucky? Has the car ever been treated with Waxoyl etc? No visible leak from engine or gearbox, and levels not dropping? ... I'd clean it and not worry too much unless it recurs. Jonathan
