  1. How about looking with an endoscope down the filler and then through an existing aperture if that didn't allow enough access? Jonathan
  2. Current ratings look good. Do you have an intercom or can you otherwise comment on electrical noisiness? Thanks Jonathan
  3. Sorry. Workshop Notice sent. Credit to John Vine on this. Jonathan
  4. I thought any of the 3 cigarette lighter jacks will produce the same output but may be time to do some tests. Agreed... they're usually passive connectors. it's the USB bits that might not supply enough current, and might vary between sockets on the same device. Jonathan
  5. Workshop Notice 572 describes how to modify the wiring to improve reliability. Please send me a Private Mail with your email address if you'd like a copy. Jonathan
  6. Paul's comments on noise. Jonathan
  7. ... or it is time to bin (any suggestion for a good one please?) Yes, but I don't know which... I'd like one "cigar lighter" socket that grips the plug well, and two USB sockets with enough oomph, and no noise. Panel or surface mount. Recommendations, please. Jonathan
  8. At least three issues there: Charging current The maximum charging current for some devices is surprisingly high, eg 2.1 A for for iPhones... greatly more than your 0.5 A. This *isn't standardised across sockets in the same way as the USB power and data standard that we all love/ hate/ rely on. And several will offer different maximum currents in different outlets of the same device. You should probably look for nominal 2 A in all of the USB sockets of the replacement. Electrical noise This has come up before, and I warned about it only yesterday. I shouldn't think there's anything you can do about it. Accessory sockets ... and it takes its input directly from the +ve battery lead. Mine also comes straight from the battery, rather than through a switched feed or battery isolator. You should have a fuse in there... Jonathan * AFAICT the widespread use of USB as a power bus wasn't foreseen. There is now the USB Battery Charging definition but it doesn't seem to help much in avoiding this type of problem. That article describes the latest initiative aimed at sorting this out. And this was the topic of my first first full and frank exchange of views on BlatChat. :-)
  9. The rules and procedures under the current regime are in Section 7 of the inspection manual. I'd go and have a cat with the tester before the inspection in case there's any disagreement in interpretation... Jonathan
  10. New regime from 20 May 2018. Jonathan
  11. You can now get sockets that include both "cigar lighter" and a few USB sockets. But there have been warnings about electrical noise from them. I use an adaptor. Jonathan
  12. Have you got the date of first registration? MoT inspection before or after 20 May 2018?Jonathan
  13. Dedicated device or smart 'phone app or would you consider either? Do you want to design routes on your computer and load them into the device? ... with atrocious battery life How about running a USB power supply off the 7? Jonathan (Navmii on an iPhone) PS: Previous discussions.
  14. Yes. I concluded it's something to with confused indexing or flagging in the database. Jonathan
  15. When I've experienced that it's associated with the post not disappearing from "New and Updated" after viewing... Jonathan
  16. Could you add a photo of the springs? Jonathan
  17. Thanks for all the requests... another batch is now looking much more likely. I'm waiting for the quote on costs. Jonathan
  18. Is the gauge reading sensibly? Previous report of a loose baffle. Jonathan
  19. That's a rather unusual way to present technical findings. Is the test that he is using well known or validated? Jonathan
  20. I inherited some Lotus fitted cases. On Nifty's advice I contacted Club Lotus who were very helpful in advertising them so that they could get to someone with the matching Elite Type 83. Private Mail sent. Jonathan
  21. Are you describing the pistons? And the Mintex pads are thinner? If so you have to wind those back in. There's a tool that makes it easier although it has been done with eg needle-nosed pliers. And you can borrow the tool if you don't want to buy one. Excellent maintenance notes from Alcester Racing 7s. Jonathan
  22. There has been no work near by, so may just be the relay or dodgy switch, are these both susceptible to failing? Compared to ordinary cars my impression is: Earth faults are more common. Relay contact and seating problems are more common. In addition: There's a known problem inside some hazard warning switches. It can be intermittent and can sometimes be temporarily fixed by cycling. It can reveal itself by faulty operation of the indicators.Jonathan
  23. I've read that excellent description again and I think that John is right. Sorry. I'd be checking the high-beam circuit starting at the dip switch. Agreed. Identify all the connections on the switches and trace where 12V is appearing as you switch them and where it isn't. Jonathan
