  1. Electronic from the gearbox or from a wheel? Is it the sort you can recalibrate at the instrument rather than the drive... can you add a photo? Jonathan
  2. Just edited the post... do I mean "Advanced" or "Professional"? Jonathan
  3. Trolley jacks: lots in the archives, and you have to make decisions on: Entry height Maximum lifting capacity (what will you use it on apart from the Seven?) Mass (aluminium structure is lighter but more expensive, do you want to take it to eg trackdays?) Cost.Jonathan PS: Mine's a Sealey Yankee 2.25 tonne steel structure. Works fine but I have no reason to think it's better or worse than any other.
  4. For the toolkit I'd start by looking at the Halfords Advanced range: lifetime guarantee (on the tools), frequent sales, Club discount, and Members seem pretty happy. As an amateur I discovered that smaller socketry is faster unless bigger is needed. And that T shaped hex wrenches are nice. All of the tools I've bought at Aldi and Lidl have been good quality, with the exception of a folding workbench. Currently recommended multimeter: Draper 60792 (but you can get it a lot cheaper elsewhere), and treat yourself to some additional leads with croc clips. Jonathan
  5. Mathematically, horsepower equals torque multiplied by rpm. H = T x rpm/5252, where H is horsepower, T is pound-feet, rpm is how fast the engine is spinning, and 5252 is a constant I was wondering if expressing one of those in different units accounted for your observation that "the power and torque curves did not merge at 5250 rpm". Could you post the curves? Jonathan
  6. No. How to measure final drive ratio... and it does involve twisting a wheel! Jonathan
  7. ... the power and torque curves did not merge at 5250 rpm? In what units of measurement? Jonathan
  8. There are some windback tools in the Equipment Register... but demand seems peculiarly high at the moment! Jonathan
  9. I'm just finishing off my first Caterham build (420R) and this weekend adjusted the handbrake and bled the brakes. In that order? See here. Jonathan
  10. That came up somewhere very recently, with the correct sequence. I'll try and find the thread. Edited: here. Jonathan
  11. Maintenance notes from Alcester Racing 7s with annotated photos! (Are there any differences for more modern 7s?) Jonathan
  12. Have you found the link to the Ford workshop manual? Jonathan
  13. If you'd like that one please send me a Private Mail with your email address. Jonathan PS: “The Devil Drinks Sangria” by Caterham Valley... does that explain the transmission whine? ;-)
  14. Have you got a recent Assembly Guide with "Fitment of dry sump oil tank" and "Routing of the oil pipes"? Jonathan
  15. That's good to know. There must be some more experiences by now... Failing that there's reputation and brand to support buying decisions. Meteor Motorsport have the Varley Lithium Li5 at £99 + VAT. Demon Tweeks now have a big range and after some discussion today of which non-lithium batteries are used in 7s they came up with: Varley list the Li-16, which is the same size as the PC680 battery and 16amp/hr, this battery with charger is £655.00 + vat Or Super B offer the B15p version again @16amp/hr , this cost - £595.99 + vat, and the charger to suit is £99.99 + vat. Jonathan
  16. PPS: Thoughts on the mobile battery solution? Jonathan
  17. Only for very specifically Porsche questions, of course! :-) Jonathan PS: Isn't it interesting whom we trust and why...
  18. interesting question. I don't know the chemistry of any of the types of Loctite, but I'd suggest gentle heat or petrol or acetone followed by the tap. Try a test piece first and keep acetone off plastics, finished surfaces etc. (Many proprietary brake and clutch cleaners contain acetone.) Jonathan
  19. Any recent work and has it been drowned? Was it being used frequently before today? Where did you connect the jump leads? Any hint of it turning over or a click with them on? What's the battery voltage at rest, minimum as you try to start and at 3,000 rpm? Then can you do the first two measurements again with it jumped to another car with the engine running fast? What type of battery and how old? Fluid level if relevant? Check all the relevant connections to battery, starter motor and earth to block etc. Inspect, wiggle, disconnect, clean and reconnect.Jonathan
  20. How have you wired it? What does the warning light do before, during and after starting and if you keep it running with the throttle?? Jonathan
  21. Brilliant, Andy... and I was waiting for the wrench to appear! Thanks Jonathan
  22. They're not in Shaun's bolt list and I can't find a definitive answer in the archives, other than to ask Redline. Jonathan
  23. If you don't get an answer here I suggest contacting Peter at SPY Motorsport in Berinsfield and asking who they use/recommend. Jonathan
  24. You haven't fitted LED indicators have you? I forgot to ask about recent work! Or drowning. Grrrrr... Jonathan
