  1. That's the point. The voltage at rest tells (a bit) about the battery. The minimum voltage during cranking tells a lot about the battery AND an estimate of the risk of some electronic component not working properly, see #26 above. The voltage at 3,000 rpm (or thereabouts) tells you about the charging system. What are the values? This collection of tests isn't only diagnostic for primary faults. If you're relying on having a good battery in any other tests and it isn't then they may be misleading. Jonathan
  2. The 3,000 rpm criterion isn't crucial, it just needs to be well above idle... open the throttle by hand while you measure the voltage across the battery terminals. Or treat yourself to those croc clip leads for the multimeter. Jonathan
  3. Have to figure out how to measure at 3,000 Is the problem the lack of an assistant? Jonathan
  4. That's a straight H4 lamp replacement? Do you have a photograph comparing the before and after beam pattern, please? Jonathan
  5. Sorry to hear about the lamp post encounter. Glad to hear that the RIVNUTs® are now biting: which material and which tool? Are you intending to use nylon bolts for the wings? Jonathan
  6. ... and will be connecting/heat shrinking the 'rats tail' to existing wiring as the connectors to the loom under the dash do not fit through the hole/grommet. Thin bullet connectors seem to be popular. Jonathan
  7. How many circuits are suspect? And how many points of access to the suspect circuits do you have? ... And can you follow revilla's *demystification article? That's on the feed side but some of the electrical and diagnostic concepts are similar. Jonathan * Or first demystification article, as I hope.
  8. Isolate the fitting by pulling the fuse or disconnecting the battery. Then as SM25T suggests using needle-nosed pliers. Jonathan PS: Ordinary WD-40 isn't a particularly good penetrating fluid. But I shouldn't think that you'll need anything for this job.
  9. What a great offer. And the answer is now in the archives! Jonathan
  10. I can't find the answer in the archives. The instructions from the Assembly Guide, but I think that they only describe how to resynchronise a fob, not the original pairing. So I've just taken one apart... and there isn't a set of switches from which the pattern can be copied. There are some experts mentioned somewhere in the Honest John forums.Jonathan
  11. They don't get mentioned as much as some others, but there are a few comments in the archives. Jonathan
  12. Select the image and then click this icon: The tools are there but I can't use them to make changes consistently. Jonathan
  13. ... what's the great resistance trap? I'm an amateur, and this is something that I mostly learned from BlatChat. Apparently the audible continuity warning can lead you to think that a circuit is good enough when in fact the resistance is inappropriately high or the smoke is actually flowing through an inappropriate pipe. But I still think that it's useful and can speed jobs up as long as you bear that in mind. Jonathan
  14. That's been reported once before. I couldn't reproduce it and don't know a fix. Jonathan
  15. Just checked the archives: Are you sure that the problem isn't with the ignition switch or a battery switch or the inertia switch? The only documentation I know for Toads. There are a couple of reports of needing to replace Toad immobilisers that couldn't be reset.Jonathan
  16. Yes. How long? I'd start with Car Builder Solutions, but sources include both automotive and building plumbing! Jonathan
  17. Appreciate the phone will be inaccurate... Which app were you using? I think they can be pretty good. It would be great if you could compare the app back to back with the dedicated meter... Jonathan
  18. Welcome. Have you already got an Assembly Guide? Let me know if not. I recommend reading John Vine's essay on clutch release bearings. Jonathan
  19. Is that viewing the image while you're managing the upload or after it's uploaded to BlatChat? Jonathan
  20. Sorry you're still not fixed. ...allen key headed screws (what's the correct name?) I'd go for "hex socket head screw" and then "cheese", "dome", "button" etc within that. But no-one's going to misunderstand "Allen", although he was a real person and deserves a capital letter. On the other hand de minimis non curat hex. Jonathan
  21. In addition to the Elise Service Manual, which contains the "Rover K Series Overhaul Manual" as above, I have the Rover Workbook for "Engine K Series 1.7 VVC". Jonathan
  22. IIRC Derek Batty had one for sale, can't remember which version... Jonathan
  23. Were they of different sizes? Jonathan
