Have you tried sbd or qed? I believe they do stats for the 2.0 16v vx which are 70 something degrees. They may do them for the 8 valve. Failing that a normal stat with the centre cut out may help a little bit. James
  2. 1.4 k-series engine for sale complete with inlet manifold and injectors. Engine rattles (ends) and smokes! Head seems o.k. Suitable for re-build or spares. Came out of '95 Rover 214 mileage approx 55000 All proceeds to ntl Can deliver if needed James james.seven@virgin.net 07973 162353 S.London/Surrey area
  3. Stewart I would not recommend using the sump without the sponge as it is the only form of baffle in the sump. The oil surge would be a major problem. The plate you refer to is the windage plate which basically helps to prevent the oil from splashing onto the crank. If this happens it slows the engine down ie less bhp etc it will also tend to come out of the breather pipes etc. The sump I got is from SBD (sbdev.co.uk from memory) It cost £200 plus the vat and comes with pick up pipe with a strainer. The main drawback with this sump is the ground clearance. It is a bit deeper than the standard Caterham sump. I cannot remember by how much but I can measure it if ness. If you do go for one check with SBD on how much oil to fill it with. The sump seems well made but seems thinner on the bottom so maybe not as strong as the standard one? Also the flywheel is left exposed so I have made an ali plate to cover this. If you do go for one dont forget to drill out a hole for the dipstick. I seem to remember that SBD call it a "lowline sump" suitable for w*******ds and rwd installations. Have you modified your breather system? I found this to help reduce oil out of the breather pipes. Hope this helps James Forgot to add that I have not grounded it out in 1500 road miles Edited by - James on 12 Dec 2000 23:52:29
  4. Alex No problems with surge yet. The sump has some baffle plates around the oil pick up and it has a baffle plate the whole length approx half way up. If you look at the inside it seems very well designed. It is not a standard sump, its a cast ali job. James
  5. I have found a similar problem with my vx. I tried changing the baffle and the oil. Also I got a tappet noise after sustained high revs My cure was to change the sump to one without a foam baffle. No more problems! The reason for this (in my opinion) is the oil cannot return quickly enough through the foam. My new sump has a strainer on the oil pick up pipe which I feel safer with. Has anyone else had this problem? James

    Brakes

I saw a set of Tarox calipers today! What a sight! They are the dogs ******** They are very light and can have 10 pistons! The chap I spoke to says that 6 pistons would be the most needed for a seven. The kits they do come with discs (vented, grooved and cross drilled) pads calipers hoses and all fittings needed. Does anyone know the weight of the 4 pot calipers from Caterham? I am waiting for some prices but I dont think they are going to be cheap. Has anyone seen them or tried them on a seven or any other car? (they do sets for anything from minis to Ferraris)I should have some more info soon if anyone is interested. James cool.gif
  7. I will try and ring you tomorrow. Does this incude a donation to ntl? wink.gif Thanks James
  8. Is it distributor less? What area are you in? Thanks in advance James Edited by - James on 3 Dec 2000 22:26:03

  10. Could you give me more info on mbe system (if wacker is not interested). How much for the lsd? Thanks in advance James
  11. Ed, On my 7 the master cyl is the standard type (two pipes) The front brakes are fed by the outlet nearest the pedal ie the front of the car. Hope this helps James
  12. The battery I use on my HPC is a Bosch battery I think it is originally intended for a Reliant Robin (dont laugh). If you need a part number let me know and I will have a look. All that was needed to fit was a few small mods to battery tray. James
  13. I received two new nuts and bolts today. One had 8.8 on the end the other had nothing. These were wrong as my chassis is threaded. The correct ones will hopefully arrive tomorrow. I will see what they have written on them. If it is not 12.9 what should I ask for? James
  14. According to a man from Comma the Comma 0w40 is Mobil 1 in a different bottle. Mobil and Comma are the only oil companies to produce a 0w40 oil and Comma own Mobil or vice-versa. James wink.gif
  15. Help!! My HPC must have something wrong with it. I average about 30 mpg. Do I drive to slow? On the oil subject I found that sustained high revs made the tappets noisy. Also the oil pressure used to drop slightly. I have recently changed the sump for a different type with no sponge baffle. This is what I think was causing it as it has been rattle free since. I am using Mobil 1 0w40. Since the sump change the oil pressure has been higher after a good thrash. Hope this may help. James cool.gif Edited by - James on 12 Oct 2000 21:31:05
  16. I got a temp gauge but a speedo would be handy. How much did you want for the speedo? Many thanks James
  17. Temp gauge and speedo wanted for Caterham 7. Not sure of any differences etc but mine are on a '96 Caterham 7 They are the Caterham branded ones. Thanks in advance James.
  18. Marius The oil pressure relief valve is there to maintain constant oil pressure. As the revs alter so will the oil pressure. If this was not fitted things like the oil filter would explode! All engines have them and the original vx one is the big bolt on the rhs of the pump when viewed from the front of the engine. The standard one is also adjustable by fitting spacers behind the spring in effect stiffening it. When you say external oil pump do you mean belt driven like for a dry sump kit? SBD have probably told you this but it is a good idea if you are replacing the pump to make sure it has a nylon relief valve as any small debris in the engine can jam the standard metal one. This may be more of a problem with a Caterham as the strainer in the original sump is removed due to lack of space. As for adjustment this would depend on your engine spec ie solid lifters and other mods. SBD would be able to tell you what spring rates etc would be best suited to your engine. Please could you let me know which type of pump you are getting as I may be replacing my one shortly? Hope this is of use James

    Track days

Does anyone know which type of crash helmet is needed for a track day (ie fia approved etc)? Also what size fire extinguisher is needed? Is anything else required for the FIA roll bar to fit apart from the boot cover? ('96 de-dion) Thanks in advance James.
  20. Please can anyone tell me the mods which are recommended for the breather in the rocker cover of the 16v XE engines? Thanks in advance James.
  21. Anna Pulp Fiction is a film with John Travolta and Bruce Willis amongst others. Try your local video store. Pump Fiction reminds me of something I saw advertised in an Ann Summers catalogue smile.gif James
  22. Pierre Do you know if you can buy them yet? I tried a couple of months ago and was told they were not available. James
  23. Stewart, My '96 HPC has 1 1/2 degrees neg. camber front and rear. It handles really well on this but I have not tried altering this as yet. This was set up by Arrowstar. This was also with 032Rs. Do you know what it is set at at the moment? Happy 7ing James
  24. Jules If you watch pulp fiction you will find out! smile.gif It is the normal attire for me at the weekends when in my 7 with no roof or doors blush.gif Have I just let my secret out? James
