    Oil problems

Andy, I don't think that the capacity of the caterham DS system is 4-5L. I thought it was more like 6. Anyone? Graham
  2. so anyone really think they have got avon rise and quarry sorted? Graham PS could they let me into the secret pls?
  3. Mike, I was there last week on weds on a day run by the CC race school. Peter, it's def a toe issue. I had it firmly pressed down on the loud pedal all day! Looks like this winter's project is to get a proper geometry and flat floor setup done (last winter's being redo all the suspension bushes, change shocks, springs and ears). BTW I have got a nice collection of spare 1.5 degree ears if anyone wants them. Graham
  4. last winter I changed DD ears for 0.5 degree ones for ACB10 usage. Having just done a hot fast day at CC, my left rear ACB10 is worn down on the inside half, but not the outside. Is that to be expected? Graham PS that's Castle Combe not Caterham Cars! Edited by - gridgway on 8 Sep 2004 21:35:38

    R500 REBUILDS

When I went for an R500, I was working on spending 3k on a rebuild every 2 years. Unfortunately I couldn't get the engines to last more than 3 months each! That's all changed of course over recent years. However, it's worth bearing in mind the risk factor. If the worst does happen and it does break, a new engine costs £13k odd. Graham
  6. interestingly, I don['t have the soot and it took my oil months and months to get dirty enough for me to have half a chance of seeing it on the dipstick! Graham
  7. that's exactly what I was thinking!
  8. I think it's just on startup. Hard to see what's going on under hard acceleration though. I assume at this stage if it's just the head it's only a nuisance rather than a sign of imminent failure? Graham
  9. good idea Steve. I'll make contact! Graham
  10. My 1600 k is a bit oily out the exhaust. This happens particularly on startup after a few days/weeks rest. The engine has done 40k miles, but has had a top and bottom end done in the last 3-5k miles. I compression tested today to get 200psi on all 4 within 2 or 3 either way. It goes like stink, pulls like a train and as smooth as a baby's bottom. I would think that the prob is valve guides/seals leaking oil down. Anyone any other ideas, and how can I diagnose same? Graham
  11. looks like you'll have fun at MOT time!!! That's if you get it sorted by then! 😳 Graham Oooops, sorry, don't take it like that, just trying the be light-hearted!
  12. wow, what engine do you have to rev to over 10.5k rpm? Graham
  13. I just love using ACB10s on track days, they are very sticky and very forgiving, perfect for me. CR500s are good as well. I didn't get on that well with 032s, ACB10s - easily the best! Graham
  14. in my humble opinion Joachim, 50% of new cost is appropriate for used parts. But of course it depends on demand and there is often lots of it on BC! BTW nice vid from Dijon if that was you! Graham
  15. well that wouldn't be good on a rebuilt engine. Have you done a compression test? Graham
  16. just out of interest, why do you want to do one anyway Steve? Graham
  17. I can vouch for that. I have fitted same said dampers. Fronts needed packing washers top and bottom, rears needed them at the top. The dampers are excellent, but I find the whole spacer thing a right PITA! Graham
  18. it sounds to me that Simon is eliminating an obvious 'wrong' thing. But I agree with Peter (it's a miracle) that it's very unlikely to be camber. I ran my R500 happily on 'radial' settings with ACBs with no sign of snappiness at the back. Graham (PS It was Simon who told me given the above info, that it didn't really matter!)
  19. dont forget to change the OP sender. This has cured my low oil pressurte problems in 4 caterhams so far since 1996! Graham
  20. the relay mod worked for me. The way I knew it was going to work was to wire up a fly lead from the feed on the solenoid. I took it up to near the +ve on the batt and whenever I got the click, I used the flylead to activate the starter. Always worked so I did the relay mod and all has been well since. Make sure that the flylead cannot accidentally make contact tho! If the rocking works, I doubt it does it by freeing a jammed starter. Graham
  21. Paul Mcken, undoubtedly I have been wrong on many occasions in my life, possibly even in relation to this thread. However in this case I am actually right and you are most definitely wrong. Graham
  22. you should be able to run perfectly happily without changing camber. But it's better (for grip and tyre longevity) to get it right. Graham
  23. I dont think you'll find tyre direction makes any difference to tail-happyness. I love my ACB10s at dry track days, they are very good! Graham they are ok in the wet, its just all very slippery in comparison with the dry!
  24. I normally use a wire brush Steve. A bench grinder with a brush attachment is also good. Dremel wire brush is good too, but wears out quickly. Graham PS Philippa wants this 😳 smiley in!
