  1. Thanks Fred, takes longer to do that though!!....
  2. Hi all I have for the second time in a year found that the pop rivets on the left hand side of the drivers floor have come apart.....my b***side is almost on the floor now!!!!!!! I am sure part of the problem lies in the fact that I am just under 16 stone, however I am sure there are other 7 owners in the same boat.... ... so the question, other than replacing the pop rivets every few months, has anyone come up with a more substantial solution!!??? 3. Well mine is in the boot too.. dedion rear, battery is in one of those plastic boxes, goes via the cut off switch and no problems with starting. It just takes up too much space!!!!... and is centrally located! Would love to move it back! Gary Supersport 1.6k
  4. Peter As I was driving in this morning the same thought occured to me as your suggestion re drilling out and fixing longer bolts with nylocs. So I was pleased to see that it is your suggestion as that gives me confidence in my thought process. I have noticed a change in characteristics, but they seem to differ from others, as an example, the ride has become very jiggly(?), which in itself does not feel so sure footed on the road, so I am keen to return to the lower fitting point. But I will be doing this with Bolts and nylocs as it just pulled out before giving me a real shock as the car crabbed!!! Peter/anyone, having not looked closely at the fixing yet to guage sizes etc, if I were to drill out the thread thats left and leave the brazed nut for strength purposes, do you not what length bolt I should be looking for as a trip out to find one is on the cards!! All help appreciated Supersport 1.6k Edited by - boughtoneatlast on 2 May 2003 16:24:33 Edited by - boughtoneatlast on 2 May 2003 22:16:32
  5. Steve Mine is a 97, HAS TWO FIXINGS BOTH THREADED FOR 7/16 unf I had a nasty moment as the thread stiped and the arm dropped off and the car scewed, I am unsure as to what difference the two settings might give and in fact why they are there at all??? Gary Supersport 1.6k
  6. Could anyone tell me the difference between the 2 fixing points on the radius arms. I have had a problem with the lower ones and wondered what effect raising the fixing point will make. Also, one of the lower ones has striped a thread on the fixing, what is the best way to solve this problem....?? Thanks Supersport 1.6k

  8. Trouble is the corner locking has me on it!!!!... all 15.5 stone of me!!!!!! So it can't be too light.... but maybe its too heavy!!??? Looks like the weekends booked with work then!! Gary Supersport 1.6k
  9. Good point and one I had not thought of!!!! Needs looking at! Gary Supersport 1.6k
  10. Hi Having gone out for a reasonably fast (I was on the road!!) blat ot the weekend, well every day in fact!, I found that if having to brake heavily and in fact checking it out braked several times, the rear offside locks. This is a new thing and even on recent track days this did not happen, even when stopping for a spinner in front of me.... I am unsure whats the problem, disks do not look warn, pads still have approx 50% left in them or more.... braking feels surefooted through pedal, but its not doing my 32rs a lot of good, if and when they lock?? Any ideas advice, oha and running standard braking systems..... Disks all round, de dion car. Gary Supersport 1.6k
  11. Okay so I might be suffering a Christmas achohol induced lack of intellect but............... ............. I am just trying to remove my old column to fit a quick release one, the problem is Ihave the standard column with normal ign barrel etc and cannot just withdraw the old one, am I missing the point and what could be stopping it from coming out, currently new wheel and column just sitting there so some advice from anyone still sober enough to help would be appreciated.......... I have removed the clamp and withdrawn it part way but then it catches on something - I was told it jsut came out once clamp undone!!!! Many thanks and a Happy Christmas to all!! Gary Gary
  12. Thjanks oilyhands Head has been away and has had the treatment!!!!... is this a weakness?, my car is fairly tuned with a standard head big valved and ported running throttle bodies, In your opinion do you think its likely to go again? Regards Gary
  13. I also had problems with my oil pressure readings, I have a 1.6k SS and having installed an apollo and a new sender am now getting much more accurate readings in line with the mech. guage used to test it. I am getting 1.5 to 2 on idle and 4-6 bar dependant on thrust !! and temp......... It is much more relaxing seeing the right numbers, I have also got a light on the dash set at 25psi, so if I have a problem on a track day I will see it and not have to keep checking the guage........ Gary
  14. Well just to knock this one on its head!!!!!!! It has turned out to be a pin pick in the head, no 1 cyl. the water way near the inlet valve was letting water into the cylynder and burning away in use!!!! So this time it was not a head gasket!!!!! Thanks to all the posts, I am learning more about my car all the time, I am hoping next year to use it a lot more and to gain some more track day experience on its ability..... Gary 😬 😬 😬 *biggrin* Gary
  15. It feels like a new MPG!!!! I have had the head pressure tested and all was fine. I am wondering now if the block might be at fault. Mind you the new gasket is fitted so I will try it out and see where we go from there, if it holds together then alls well if not I guess I might have to look deeper, how can you tell if there is a fault with the block and is it likely?? Gary
  16. Hoopy, I have had a new head as my last was porous!!!, I am somewhat concerned as I agree with your point about symptom rather than cause!! There appears to be nothing wrong have had head checked out for straightness and pourosity and all is ok. And the gasket that came off seemed to have nothing wrong! How many miles have you managed per gasket!>?? Gary
  17. So am I alone in this one???? After several cooling level problems, I am now on another Head gasket!!!....; so who else has experienced failures in the head area !! and found the gaskets not holding up. My head has been reworked and whilst not seeing any power or running problems – I have still lost water!! There was a small jet of water escaping from no3 cylinder. Is this a contiuous problem experienced by others? and what is the best gasket to fit – MG standard parts or alternative?? My car is a 1.6k SS running at approx. 170 bhp having had several upgrades, yet I see other cars in a higher state of tune not suffering the same problems...... or are they just regularly changing gaskets. 18. Dave When was your car registeredf and engine....? Gary - 1.6KSS = 170bhp - now- but looking for more! P335VHT
  19. Well having been there!!!.... I have experienced similar symptoms to yourself, however mine was due to a porus head initially, so loss of water meant that there was not enough to give the fan sender a reading therefore not kicking in therefore blowing gasket at the same time....... I am still not out of the woods as another fault has occured but it is being dealt with by a well known Caterham service centre so I am confident that all should come together soon........ Good luck, but careful, Rover dealers tend to have fitters - not engineers in my experience and I would not trust them to do much on my 7! Gary - 1.6KSS = 170bhp - now- but looking for more! P335VHT
  20. tried loads of tests this weekend... does look like it is seeping water somewhere I suspect the replaced head, or as batteredoldsupersport says the gaskets gone, I don't have the equipment to test so its back to my mates in Barnet......... More time off the road, guess my track days will have to wait till next year Gary - 1.6KSS = 170bhp - now- but looking for more! P335VHT
  21. Paul I did wonder about overfilling also, but I am only filling to the indicator on the header, so should be OK........ I am just about to try out whether it continues to go down if you don't fill, should be interesting!! It certainly has me confused and frustrated at the same time as I want to get some track days booked but not with a car loosing water........ ☹️ ❗ Gary - 1.6KSS = 170bhp - now- but looking for more! P335VHT
  22. Andy, The head was replaced 2 months ago, so hopefully thats not faulty. The system was pressure tested last week and there was no drop in pressure and no noticable leaks which is worrying...... But each time I go out I fill to the coolant level marker, then when I return (needs to be 20 miles or more it seems) then it has dropped about 1.5 cm... Have had rails changed and all main hoses are now silicone, new cap on header, although I have to say I wonder if this is faulty but cannot see any evidence of water loss from here. It is a very strange fault!!! Gary - 1.6KSS = 170bhp - now- but looking for more! P335VHT
  23. This has been an ongoing situation and is now causing a lot of head scratching....... Car 1.6kss, with various mods, big valve/ported head and throttle bodies etc......;. the car runs really well, however an ongoing coolant problem is now causing great concern and I am hoping that the knowledge on BC will help shed some light. I initially lost coolant and it was found that I had a porous head, this was replaced along with hoses, etc...... I then had to run in the engine and for this period it did not loose any water..... Having had the head reshimmed (I run solid followers), new cap etc........ it has started to loose water on each journey;.40/50 miles = about 1cm drop!! It has now been back a couple of times, (this work is beyond my tech ability) and having picked it up Saturday, having had suspect hoses replaced (they leaked on pressure testing) I have checked the car and again lost water. When this initially happened, it was obvious that there was a head problem as water/steam emanated from the exhaust – this time there are no tell tale signs, no obvious water leaks, no loss of performance and no poor running. Please any advice, I want to get the car on the track but can’t till I am happy with it!!!!! Gary - 1.6KSS = 170bhp - now- but looking for more!
