  1. You can detect lower wishbone wear easily with the trunnion test. Jack up wheel about 2" off the ground. With a long bar 3' or more lever the wheel vertically up and down. Watch trunnion or Sph bearing in this case. Does it move vertically? You can also just lift the wheel vertically from above and detect play as the 7 front corner is so light... 2. You might need to get grease all the way from the adjuster opening to the far end. I took the gaiter off that end and filled it with light grease, put it back in and used it as a bellows to squeeze grease in from the far end - after several repeats to fill her up, it worked a treat. 3. I've not done any bhp testing but can't say I can detect any power loss on the road. I made a box with 3" inlet pipe and cold air splitter / sort of air ram thing in the nose. I left plenty of room from the trumpets to the end plate of the air box. I actually had to richen the map a little at revs as she was getting more air than before... Fantastically quiet compared to the ITG filter. 4. Ever the helpful (not) Tony Dad ran over something and tyres are wearing like crazy on insides so wanted to check with our gauge. Add lightness, says the man with a VX :-) My racing & other pics here General pics (mostly of 7's and cars). here
  5. Anyone with a Ford Focus Haynes manual out there? - year 2005, Petrol 1.6. Please let me know the Front Toe settings. Add lightness, says the man with a VX :-) My racing & other pics here General pics (mostly of 7's and cars). here
  6. That looks like a spring plate washer of some sort - no idea from where... I would discard the cover and fit a half undertray. Keeps the alt and DS belt (if you have one safer) and the front engine compartment clean plus you can easily do a visual check. You are not alone in finding things that should not be there. I found a slightly knurled M12 nut sitting in the sump foam baffle first foam change I did Never found from where or why and have done 15,000 miles / 8 yrs since Add lightness, says the man with a VX :-) My racing & other pics here General pics (mostly of 7's and cars). here Edited by - stevefoster on 25 Jan 2009 12:24:07
  7. I agree at least with my cheapo MIG. Using the right gas - Argon is best I have found. I had trouble welding right at the manifold headers where the SS if heat cycle hardened so much. My work just cracked or a new crack appeared along side my work. I got a TIG owning expert to repair and strengthen area. Been fine since then. 8. Some carriers certainly do allow you to send oil. As an aside: I have Gunwash (mix of Cellulose and other more aggressive thinners) sent to me. 9. My clutch cable is 11 years old and ~20000 miles used. I think HPC VX have less clutch cable issues than Xflows and K series though. I always give the cable/sheath a few drops of light oil when I have the pedal box cover off for routine inspections - perhaps this is a contributing factor. 10. Yep JPE/R500 pump = Rover 220 turbo Tomcat fuel pump 27gm/s, versus 19gm/s for the stock (Caterham) K-series pump. I made sure mine could deliver 4 bar pressure with all the injectors fully open... Add lightness, says the man with a VX :-) My 2002/2003 racing pics here General pics (mostly of 7's and cars). here
  11. 1L might be enough depends how quickly you get the air out. 2l will def see it done so I'd get that much in. If you are DOT4 or DOT5.1 then cheap enough. AP600 or the Castrol high temp stuff and it gets a more expensive... Add lightness, says the man with a VX :-) My 2002/2003 racing pics here General pics (mostly of 7's and cars). here
  12. You need to preload the grub screw. Tightening it alone as described above WILL NOT work and could in fact be dangerous. A flat screw will only make matters worse I would have thought. Procedure: Unload the two bolts that do the clamping and screw the grub screw in so that it is about 1mm proud. A bit farther if you are aiming for an existing 'ding' in the column. Apply a little suitable thread lock to the grub and the clamp bolts for extra security. Suitably tighten the locking nut. Now tightening the two clamping bolts evenly to force the grub screw in to the column. Use mechanical sympathy understanding to feel what it right with regard to torque applied. Done properly this results in a force on the grub screw greater than could be achieved by just turning it and the assemble will remain done up properly for the life of the vehicle or until you next undo it. 13. Not just about following (or perhaps it is)... rear toe in give stability. Both under braking and power on. I raced against a Westie that 1st season was always spinning - driver I thought. Then he got the car set up with rear tow in. Low and behold he had a car he could handle and did pretty well after that. 14. ooh tempting - I have one Kevlar and one S type at the moment. Are yours black and are the bases scratched? I'll think about it... Add lightness, says the man with a VX :-) My 2002/2003 racing pics here General pics (mostly of 7's and cars). here
  15. Agree about the run it up to temp - burn off all the condensation that forms acids otherwise. I will be starting and moving mine - keeps the clutch happy too... Add lightness, says the man with a VX :-) My 2002/2003 racing pics here General pics (mostly of 7's and cars). here
