  1. Cheers Jonathan. I've got an assembly guide that should be contemporary to the car which mentions a bracket, but Arch put a later type fuel tank mounting (which has caused headaches) so I'm guessing they might have done the rest of it 'the modern way'! I'm not sure which ali panel it would go through mind you, as that would simply take it into the passenger compartment :-/ This doesn't have calipers, it's a drum brake one, so the pipes don't need to accommodate any movement. I'll have another look, and if I can't suss it I'll make my own mounting.
  2. hello - putting my Dad's early HPC back together and I have a feeling that Arch my have left a bracket off when they re-did the back end, because I can't see anywhere for the flexi brake line from the De Dion tube to attach to the chassis. I've got it pointing upwards from the T-piece and can't see where it would attach - does anyone with an older car remember where it goes onto the chassis at the back of the tunnel? I've still got to make up the hard lines running to the front of the car, and obviously can't do that until the flexi is in place :-/ Any pointers greatly appreciated, I'm back down South tomorrow and wanted to take my flaring tool back with me :-D Cheers Paul
  3. The Rapfix are brilliant, but too rich for my blood!! I think I'm just going to have a non-removable wheel. I was in two minds anyway aesthetically so will sell these on I think. My Dad might want it, he struggles for space more than I do! I do need a new boss as I'm restoring an old Moto lita race wheel to replace my 70s-tastic Mountney, but a simple boss will be fine, and at least there's no chance of play.
  4. so Lifeline got back to me, and said they can't guarantee the fit as they are a matched pair, but they can sell me a male spline. but it'll be £50, which I'm not sure is really worth it :-/
  5. assuming the boss is a more expensive part than the splines then I'd rather try to find a spline - I've not fitted the column yet. It would be good to work out what it is even if only to sell it on! Have emailed Lifeline to see what they say about availability
  6. https://goo.gl/photos/brx36udJft3UEZQD7 can't get the image to post but hopefully that link will show the disparity - the column has one less spline and is 1-2mm smaller
  7. Hi Unfortunately, for some reason the column and boss I bought from this thread http://www.lotus7.club/forum/sale/sold-steering-column-upper-section weren't compatible as the splines are a different size and number (maybe Lifeline changed this over the years?!) These things happen and both were cheap so no worries, but does anyone know if anyone can supply the male spline or an upper column separately? can't find anything online :-/ Cheers Paul
  8. do you know if it'll fit a 98 Classic please? Not sure if all the steering columns are the same :-/ I'll have it if it does :-)
  9. if you can be bothered to take the nosecone off, I find tin foil to work really well, you just wrap it round the edges of the rad and it stays there with no other help needed, and is waterproof of course - had buy some from a petrol station to do this when I bought my Classic in January and drove it up to Wales. Plan to sort the stat out in the next couple of weeks mind you so maybe it won't be necessary, we'll see.
  10. Hi Charles - I'll have the rear wings please if no-one else has their name on them? Would have to nip down one evening probably to get them if that's ok? Cheers Paul
  11. I'll have the grill if you still have it please? Cheers Paul
  12. Unless you've had a timing light connected and seen definite issues of the spark being in the wrong place, I'd start by looking at the carbs - I've had similar symptoms with Webers. Check for air leaks at the o rings (these will tend to show up on part throttle) and then blocked jets. Also look into the carbs to make sure the chokes are all in position, the bolts that locate them can fall out of the bottom of the carb, and it is surprising how well the engine will still run on a steady throttle when they do!
  13. Thanks all, have just got back from France where the stormy weather meant I used the tonneau quite a bit - the headrests were just a little stuck due to rust. The first time one came out I of course ended up hurling it into the air in surprise but luckily it didn't land on the car! They are going in and out easily enough now though.
  14. Cheers Ian - I can't see a stem because the headrests are right down, and it looks like 2001 was a changeover year for seats (though they look pretty similar): http://caterhamparts.co.uk/product.php?id_product=4561 I will try to see if I can get a glimpse of the stem and try the WD...
  15. hello, this might turn out to be a daft question, but can you remove the headrests on grey cloth adjustable seats of '98 vintage? I've bought a tonneau that doesn't have pockets for headrests (will be changing the seats and roll bar in time anyway and will have the headrests mounted on the bar) About to head off to France on Wednesday and I thought the tonneau would be handy if the headrests are removable - however, lots of pulling to no avail and I'm worried I'll break something - is there a knack or are they a permanent fixture?
  16. Thanks Oliver - R&R will supply the diff from Quaife, they are the same price as Quaife so easier for me. Demon Tweeks don't list the Ital version, just the DD. Phil at R&R told me fitting the Quaife would remove one of the weak links of the axle, though this may only be if you spin up one wheel a lot. Elie, 100bhp and ancient 185 Michelins trashed mine on one airfield day with a 5000 mile car, so let's hope it lasts a bit better once R&R have fixed it :-D S&C will pull it apart next week and get the diff over to R&R - will report back what they find...
  17. thanks elie - it's R&R who are repairing the diff and suggested the Quaife wasn't that good for drifting and donuts, but I think is all they can supply for the Ital - will give Jigsaw a call tomorrow if I get a chance, but not sure I can run to the £816+ they list for an LSD on their site - Oliver, I'll post up if I find any other options. I've driven a DD car with the early Sierra diff and it did noticeably (under, mostly) steer the car, and would like to avoid the sudden and unexpected sideways in the wet moments that car was keen to dish out, so it's likely the ATB is the best compromise.
  18. great, cheers Gordon for the vote of confidence :-)
  19. Actually, a bit more searching and a bit more confidence that the ATB will be fine judging from a Caterham owner on this thread: http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=173966
  20. Hi - considering my options for my Ital diff repair, and wanted to ask if anyone knows of any plate type diffs for the Ital axle - I haven't found any online, and in two minds about the ATB as it's not supposed to be much cop for sliding about Alternatively, if you've got an ATB and can verify it has no problem sliding, please let me know :-) Cheers Paul
  21. Cheers - the slingshot isn't really that different from the 7 - spaceframe chassis, ally body, based on a 50s design... :-D on the other hand, no ability to get round corners, 4-500bhp of lumpy cast iron V8 and designed and built by a pillock in his garage instead of the greatest automotive genius ever ;-)
  22. Reluctant to put a non-7 post in this forum as it's the only one, but maybe some Essex members might want to get along in future... Last Sunday we had a great day out at North Weald running my slingshot (only it's 2nd and 3rd runs since I finished it, so no full passes) but there was a great variety of cars there, from hot rods to hot hatches, Ferraris to Fiat 500s There's a good vid here (we did have some problems starting the slingshot at the line!) Next one is on 5th July, hope to get a few more runs in!
  23. Just a note that Corby Motorsport's special offer on Quaife diffs wasn't so special - 5 days after ordering they refunded my money and emailed to say it wasn't "viable" to sell me the diff - I can only assume they weren't going to make enough money and changed their mind...
  24. Thanks Elie, I've pm'd you is it possible that the factory baffled some axles but not others? I read lots of tales like yours Andy before plumping for an LA car so figured that I shouldn't have any problem putting 100bhp through rock-hard (15 year old) 185 Michelins on a dusty airfield - maybe the reason some axles cope fine and some like mine give up when faced with their first track abuse is because some have baffles and some not?
