    Heater Upgrade

I have a Crossflow, with older style heater. One of my attempts to cool the cockpit was to add a bypass valve from a tx4 taxi, with a cable from a mini to under dash. My theory was to try to reduce the temperature of the heater matrix in normal use so bypassing it would do that. Seems to work. The problem with mine was it worked almost too well. The first fan setting was hot. The second was enough to create a pizza oven... if you have a by pass valve I'd check it was opened if you want hotter water flowing through the matrix?
  2. Is this it? http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/billet-aluminium-switch-single-indicator-arrow
  3. I'd be tempted to take the M fuse out and see if the RHS light worked?
  4. Spotted just by the roundabout over the M25. Heard the rumble even though I had headphones on, walking... nice sound!
  5. I'm pm ing you as perhaps not wise to detail tracker on an open forum.
  6. I've put a Summit Racing heat shield wrap over my starter motor, I'm sure it would fit an alternator, though Take care due to the proximity of whirly bits. (I put it around a new starter motor as on a Crossflow its in a pretty hot place near exhausts.) I bought it in an auction but they are sold here on 'buy it now' http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.TRS0&_nkw=SUM-350118+-+Summit+Racing®+Starter+Heat+Shield+Wraps&_sacat=0 On my alternator, I had occasional cutting out after it got pretty soaked one night. Mine did not have the plastic plug, so I retro-fitted one that goes under the clip. It's one of those simple things I feel should have been like that in the first place, it's vulnerable down there to dampness.
  7. I 'think' one reason for the modern prevalence of laminated is legislation. The laminated glass prevents you exiting the vehicle in the event of an accident as I think you were alluding to earlier?. (Hardly relevant as your strapped in tight in a Caterham). As for bullets...I've been dodging those for years.
  8. Jk, it's in the benefits section.... Car Screen Windows. ( I suspect cut a pasted from US site?)
  9. I JK I thought that landrover flat plain screens were toughened? I may be wrong. Stevenage Glass do have a web page explaining differences. http://www.stevenage-glass.co.uk/news/toughened-and-laminated-glass-explained/
  10. I just replaced my screen today. it was a rather chipped heated screen. As I've used it perhaps twice in two years fr a few mins I figured plain glass will be fine. Glass was cut by Stevenage Glass. It's 4.5 mm toughened. They put a mark on it, not CE but says toughened I think and Stevenage Glass. It's small, right by where the mirror goes so hidden. They did it for £30, a couple of local members also got spare screens 'just in case'. Totally agree on getting a can of silicone spray. Use it ! Remove knee panels undo nuts, cut wire, take to table. Remember how you removed screen. Especially orientation of the triangle wedges at the base. i was lucky enough to get a new surround from a member recently who'd had his screen and frame replaced under insurance, it was the more modern matt Ali surround which I had metal polished to shiny shiny shiny finish. I found using a load of silicone spray meant the rubber went into the surround easily, after first wrapping around Glass. I have fitted a new mirror, old one was slightly pitted. I used the glue in the tube fixing method. You put glue on the mirror base, put a bit of supplied gauze on that, then press on screen for a bit longer than a mi ute and leave overnight. All done in an hour and a bit. Taking bets on when my next chip will happen.
  11. Yup, mine was 3 bolts, 10 tooth. I seem to remember the cog on the replacement look slightly shorter than the older one, but works fine. Thinking about it, after 20 years of use in the hottest part of the engine bay (exhaust is near it) it has a tough life... I wrapped my replacement in a heat reflective cover. Probably no need as I'm happy to buy a new one every 20 years... The difference in spin up was marked, went from a 'will it or won't it' at the risk of draining the battery to 'whoooooompffffff'. i think a year ago there was a thread on this, another member did the same as me at the same time with the same unit and supplier.
  12. Ta... hard to share links from iPad, for eBay. search term is: FORD SIERRA 1.6 2.0 OHC PINTO HIGH POWER BRAND NEW UPGRADE STARTER MOTOR 82-86
  13. I replaced mine (1995 Crossflow) with one of these, new: http://https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271765788262 It was cheaper than a refurb and as delivery was next day so no time off road. It has perked up starting no end. Been in for a year with absolutely no issues.
  14. 'Queerbox'. I'll google that carefully, but what an interesting thing. Thanks for that JK, you learn something ever day. (Though I forget more...)
  15. Thanks for the tips. Yes BGH looked great (sheds, smell of oil, loads of gears and a wealth of knowledge from the 3 guys there). Got their name from old threads on here. As Sevens and Classics have had the car in for a month this year being repaired they did comment on gear change after I asked them to look at it. They inspected it and reported it wasn't linkages. It's not an urgent repair as I'm used to it, I just know it could be better. As the box is lower mileage than my current box and picked up for a bargain price I figured it perfect to get fixed on a bench at leisure by experts. BGH did say they experimented once by putting a higher gear on 3rd than 4th and lowering 4th to make an odd gated gearbox , which actually appeals to my sense of humour and love of idiosyncrasies... but they said it wasn't really strong. Nice idea though! Wheel size, I'll keep at 13" ...changing just rears doesn't appeal as I have the spare and like the 'classic' look. ill probably try the diff thing at some stage, as and when that needs looking at. Maybe I'll put that down as next years 'fiddle'...
  16. Picked up box from seller and swung round to BGH Geartech in Cranbrook, Kent. Initial inspection fine. Will be stripped, refurbished where needed, stronger casting to gear lever fitted and put in my 7 nearby when I can. No rush. Will do clutch same time. So, only practical way for me to get better cruising is diff gear change? Any experience of this? Would it dull acceleration (bearing in mind it's a 150 bhp modded Crossflow used for street, no intention of tracking it.
  17. My current gearbox, 4 speed, on a Crossflow, 'Roger King'd' to 150bhp from standard 135 has some signs of wear, after 45000 miles of use. When it was recently serviced the garage did inspect it to see if it was linkages but it's not. Quoted £700 approx to repair. It graunches between 3rd and 2nd If I don't time it right. I've just sourced a low mileage (15,000) mile box. Apart from getting this newer box inspected by a gearbox guru before fitting (no real urgency, car runs fine except for the slight probs) what are my options. Are there any cog upgrades suitable? As I have a tad more power than stock can I utilise a 'longer' 4th in any way? (I'm not after an overdrive feel just wondering if I could get a calmer motorway cruise). After 2 years of Cat ownership I've settled into enjoying 3rd a lot for the local twisters but also I do regular motorway miles. Any thoughts and suggestions? I am more than happy if the consensus is kept it stock, just inspect before fitting.

    tight nuts

Mmmmm, you mean a good tight by the brace then a quick stomp on it with a foot isn't good enough? You live and learn. i guess my optimal setting is 1 foot pound?
  19. Pic of the car and I presume owner at. Brands last year.
  20. spotted my twin coming the other way, slightly surreal. Id popped out as it was so nice round here this afternoon, looks like you were doing the same. Thanks for the wave back!
  21. "One of the battles we had was with anaesthetists who cut off bands as soon as they could in case they needed access." Maybe that's why I woke to find they'd shoved a needle in my foot!
  22. On the subject of wristbands, on Monday the hospital put identification tags on both arms AND allergy alert bands on both arms. I looked like an escapee from Glastonbury. I asked if it was in case they chopped one of my arms off by accident.
