  1. Ned,

I bought what I though was the closest fit from eBay (but it didn't quite fit).

However, it was 'relatively' easy to insert a screw driver, slide out the spade connectors, and replace the existing socket and plug.

disclaimer. Others may have found the exact fit, and I did have to work head down in the footwell to sort it out.

  2. Car now with more fuel... No joy.

i have have a photo of the correct wiring for the key barrel. However, there is a study plastic cone clipped onto the back of the key barrel (with the diameter tapered down towards the wires end). Does anyone know how this can be removed without breaking it?

  3. Ok folks, advice please.

I'm having trouble getting the engine started for the first time.

I turn the key to position II. I hear the fuel pump and liquid moving. the dash board comes to life. I see an orange engine warning sign and a red battery sign.

The imobiliser light flashes rapidly and then turns off (a good sign I think).

i push he start button but nothing happens.

I move the key to III. When I push the start button the starter motor springs to life and turns the engine. ( a bit weird, the start button is supposed to work on II??)

fuel doesn't seem to be getting to the pistons and I can't smell fuel.

I have pressed down on the inertia button behind the brake reservoir - it is not that.

    What am I missing?

    any ideas...

  4. I am trying to sort some film protection for my rear mudguards and I have been in touch with Dave at Premier Paint Guard.

At the moment he does not have a template for the 160 rear mudguards but he is considering getting one sorted. Would there be much interest from other 160 owners (of which there are growing number)?

    website here (no commitment)

    thanks

  5. hello folks,

It says in the instructions to attach the earth lead of the repeater to he wingstay using a pop rivet. I'm thinking that in this damp environment there is likely to be rather rapid corrosion between aluminium and steel. Am I being over sensitive, or is the least of my worries...

    advice please.

  6. Thanks, I have the IVA compliance sheet from the website. No mention of cycle wing position though.

I notice that, unless the wings are fairly far forward, they clip the body work when the steering is on full lock on both sides (and this looks further forward than I have seen on most photos). Is this the norm?

  7. I'm about to fit cycle wings on my 160. Is the any IVA requirement that they must cover some fraction of the wheel, or anything like that.

I think I'll bolt them on rather than bond them. However, any advice welcome (before I cock it up).

  8. I have relatively easy access to the drain plug and filler plug of my 160. However, the level plug is awkward to access in the transmission tunnel (it is 3/8” square hole, but I can't squeeze a wrench in). The handbook says the capacity should be 1.2L

I'm going to measure the volume of oil carefully and just fill it.

    Any wisdom gratefully received....

  9. Thanks,

I emailed Caterham, and they confirm what you said. I'll tighten the bolts. I am a bit worried about vibration coming through the footwell. However, the heat proofing is fairly thick. Hopefully this will have a damping effect.

  10. hello folks,

I just lowered the engine into my 160 body today. I notice that the gearbox is resting against the heatproof insulation on the drivers footwell and that, although I can get all the bolts into the engine and gearbox mountings, the shaft of the gearbox is not exactly straight.

Is this the case with other Caterhams? Any wisdom gratefully received....

  11. Quoting Paul Deslandes:
Lidl have a reasonable multimeter on special at the moment ("Once they're gone, they're gone!") for £8.99. Not the best but well featured and good value for money. Also claims to measure AC current if that's of use to you - quite unusual.

Thanks for this. I picked one up today. As you say, not the best, but great for basic car stuff.

  12. Quoting Myles:
What kind of fuel pump problems?

A classic build issue used to be (probably still is) to accidentally connect the fog lamp to the fuel pump connector and vice versa.

No not that... It was just a blown fuse.

    We have ignition! *cool*

  13. Ah ha,

We took the starter motor out, tested it, put it back. Then success...

Your earth comments might have been correct or maybe the starter motor was just stuck.
