    The Chair
Formally announcing the ‘Caterham and Lotus Seven Club’

I am delighted to announce that effective from 7th November 2021, the
Club formally became the “Caterham and Lotus Seven Club”
following the decisive outcome of the members’ vote earlier in
    the year.

Now that the formal name change has been adopted, the work of
updating the Club’s identity throughout the many locations that
it is used is proceeding. This process will of course take some
time to complete but in the first instance, our new name is being
displayed on November’s edition of Lowflying and is being rolled
out across the Club’s various locations online.

We have now adopted the new web domain: www.caterhamlotus7.club and
whilst the old web address will continue to forward to this URL
for some time, we would encourage all members to change their
browser bookmarks to the new address, and also to note that the
email addresses to contact Club officers have also changed (see
November’s Lowflying or look on the Club website under “About Us”
    for details).

A new range of Club merchandise is being worked on and will be
available soon. The address to view and order merchandise online
is now: www.7gear.store - do keep an eye on the range as this is
surely the perfect Christmas present opportunity…

The Leadership Team of the Caterham and Lotus Seven Club hopes
that all members will fully embrace our new, more inclusive title
which better reflects the full lineage of the cars we are so
passionate about. We remain that same club of dedicated Seven
enthusiasts, under the same Club logo motif that we adopted in
2003. Only the name has changed — a little. As we have said
before and are happy to repeat, the Club does not want to lose one
iota of the Lotus Seven Club, just “add Caterham”.

Here’s a great opportunity to banish the winter blues (for a little while at least).
Winter is coming, the opportunities to get out in your Seven are limited or non-existent, so what better time to be looking forward to the New Year and new opportunities.
With Richard Nichol (Chair of the Caterham and Lotus 7 Club) we have been looking at how we can provide opportunities next year for members and their partners or friends to come together for a mix of social and driving pleasure.
As a result, we are delighted to announce a series of “Club Weekend Blats” – a new initiative, starting next year with three fantastic blatting weekends away at different locations around the country. Our first event will be the “Club’s Bath and Wells Weekend Blat” but expect more news soon about other events we are looking to arrange including “The Club’s Bard’s Weekend Blat” in the Midlands, “The Club’s White Rose Weekend Blat” in Yorkshire and possibly one further weekend away in the SouthEast.

The end of the year is fast approaching and that means the first Sunday in November and Sossiges, the London to Brighton Veteran Car run gathering at Handcross. This year marks the 125th anniversary of the running and is likely to be better than ever.
We will be providing bacon rolls (alas sausages are not as easily cooked but the event name stays) and plenty of tea and coffee awaiting you for breakfast. So come down and enjoy a good old chat with friends from around 08:00 and enjoy the spectacle of veteran and vintage cars on making their way at various speeds towards a finish at Marine Parade in Brighton. The ESV will be on hand as well should you fancy some club merchandise.
We would like some volunteers for car parking and other duties throughout the morning so please let me know if you can spare some time - email surrey@lotus7.club or ring me on 07894 464900
This is a very popular event every year and hopefully you will come out and support it in your droves and donate to new Club charity, Prostate Cancer Research. We ask for £10 for your breakfast, and all profit will go to the charity. In 2019 you raised almost £500 and it would be nice to soundly beat that this year. Here's hoping (probably in vain) for for a nice crisp, clear and sunny Sunday morning.
Details of the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run are here:
    https://www.veterancarrun.com/
Our set up will be outside Handcross Primary School, B2114, London Road, Handcross, RH17 6HB with parking at Handcross Health Centre's car park, postcode RH17 6BN, just South of the School. For those of you with the What3words app the location is "placidly.steamed.sliders"

    Introducing the Seven 170

    By Mcalvert, in Caterham Cars,

Seven 170 – the new featherweight Seven
At a time when most mainstream cars seem to be piling on the pounds, the announcement of Caterham’s “lightest ever production car” comes as a welcome surprise.  With a headline weight of just 440kg, the Seven 170 is listed as being 50kg lighter than Seven 160 it replaces.   Of course, as an entry-level car powered by a 660cc turbocharged Suzuki engine, it’s not designed as an all-out track weapon, but with 84bhp and 116Nm of torque, the power-to-weight ratio of 170bhp/ton should still make for a very entertaining drive.
The Seven 170 is also the smallest Caterham as well — measuring just 1,470mm wide, it’s 105mm narrower than anything else within the current range.  Part of the justification for these diminutive dimensions and small engine capacity is, of course, the fact that the model conforms to Japanese Kei car regulations With Japan such a key market for Caterham Cars, and the recent acquisition of the business by VT Holdings, such a move makes clear sense.
In a further departure from the 160 which was only available in a single base configuration, prospective Seven 170 customers can choose between two packs, the road-ready 170S or the more stripped back, track-focused 170R whose features include sport suspension, limited-slip differential, composite race seats, four-point race harness and a carbon-fibre dashboard.  An added bonus of the pared-back design lies in reduced emissions; ULEZ and Euro 6 compliant, the new model also claims to be Caterham’s lowest emission model, which is likely to become increasingly important in future years.
At a time when the pool of available internal combustion engines is shrinking, and emissions regulations are getting tighter and tighter, the launch of this new model has to be excellent news for the future of the Seven.  The Seven 160 proved itself to be a highly entertaining car to drive; we plan to get behind the wheel of the Seven 170 in both ‘S’ and ‘R’ Pack finishes for a report in Lowflying magazine very soon.
