A new category of Guides has just been launched with details of our favourite driving routes including maps/satnav files and good places to stop en-route. Thanks go to Nigel Mercer for volunteering to be the curator of this section. If you have a favourite route to add then please contact Nigel, preferably with a good description of the route, the route details (a map, link to google maps and/or satnav files) and details of any good stopping points (pubs, places of interest, etc.).

Now in its third edition, Roberto Rizzo tells us that the team is working to make this year’s event better than ever!  The Portofino Meeting has always been one of the most successful meetings of Lotus 7 Club Italia, and the team is keen to invite Seven owners from around the world to join in.
“The spirit will be the same as usual, exactly what one could expect from a Seven meeting in Italy! First of all a lot of driving along beautiful scenic roads, between the Maritime Alps and the Ligurean Sea.  And if this is not Italian enough we add picturesque old towns on the sea, with colourful houses, delicious local food, and of course –even if Phil doesn’t agree, read his article on the side!- a lot of wine.
Again if you think this is not enough, remember that in Liguria in September the average temperature is high enough to enjoy a bath in the sea or in the hotel’s swimming pool, and the sun is strong enough to gently dry you while you indulge on a chaise longue on the beach.
The program of the meeting is roughly to gather at the meeting point (that will be communicated a few days before the meeting), then we drive along the meeting route, with a few breaks, and of course a big lunch. The route will end at the hotel, where we’re expected to arrive in mid-afternoon. So you have time for a little rest, or to take a bath!
Before the dinner, we’ve organized an “aperitivo” in the hotel patio, so we can have some informal social time with the other guests.
The dinner also will be in the hotel’s restaurant. So you will not have the hassle to drive back to the hotel, and you won’t feel guilty drinking a couple of glasses of wine. I must add that the hotel’s restaurant is one of my favourite restaurants in the area…
On Sunday we will have a shorter drive in the area, to leave some spare time for sightseeing or going to the beach. The meeting will end with the final lunch on Sunday.
    Prices & conditions
The price is €260,00 for the driver and €180,00 for the passenger (which means, at the present exchange rates £187,00 and £130,00).
    The price includes:
    Registration to the meeting
    Saturday lunch
    Saturday aperitivo
    Saturday dinner
    Stay in 4-star hotel
    Private parking in the hotel
    Sunday lunch
(the meals included: water, wine or optional beer and coffee).
Please note that the room availability is limited. The first people who register will be assigned a room in the main hotel. When the rooms will be finished we will send you to nearby hotels, but prices or hotel category might change.
If you have any special need (attend to 1 day only, sleep in a different hotel, etc), please contact roberto.rizzo@lotus7club.it for a personalized quote.
Interested?  The registration form can be found at: http://www.lotus7club.it/en/portofino
What? Drive to Italy for just a weekend?
We understand that it is a long drive from England to Italy. So we will be happy to provide a few suggestions for a longer stay.  Just send us an email and we’ll be happy to advise
We also have contacts with a shipping company which can arrange for your car to be transported down to Italy, if you don’t fancy the drive.  Again, send us an email and we’ll be happy to put you in contact.

The fourth round of the L7C Speed Championship took us to Gurston Down near Salisbury in Wiltshire. Unusually this event, a round of the British Hillclimb Championship, takes place over two days with three practice runs on Saturday and one practice plus two timed runs on Sunday. Saturday was warm and dry but the forecast for Sunday was not looking so good. In the end it was dry until late afternoon when some light drizzle (or psychological rain as some competitors like to call it) affected the second timed run for most. There is a write up on the day on the Gurston Down website and the full L7C results are Gurston Down 2015.pdf.

Sunday 17th May saw the club's 3rd speed championship event of the year take place at Curborough Sprint course near Lichfield. This is the spiritual home of the L7C sprint series and is one of just two events that the club organises itself (for the rest we are an invited club at other clubs' events). Some competitors got some sneaky practice in on the British Motorsport Marshalls Club sprint the day before and then stayed over for a BBQ under one of the club's Coleman shelters. Although Sunday wasn't quite as warm as Saturday, the weather stayed dry and we saw some close competition. The full results can be found Curborough Standard 2015.pdf but the highlight of the day was Simon Rogers (pictured) breaking the class 7 record which had stood since 2007 with a fantastic time of 54.24s. On board footage can be seen
. If this has whetted your appetite, either to spectate or compete, then the club runs it's next event at Curborough using the alternative figure of 8 layout on 30th August. The next event for our championship is this coming weekend 23rd/24th May at Gurston Down.

The club's first Speed Championship event of 2015 took place on Saturday at the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit. Competing here is always quite daunting, not just because of the history of the place but also the fact that it is a very fast circuit. The quicker Sevens reach speeds of over 130mph on the two straights and for most of the lap you never use any gear lower than fourth! Despite a wet night and early morning, the track was only a little damp for first practice but that didn't stop a few over exuberant competitors from spinning. It dried fairly quickly though and the rain held off for the three timed runs. We even had some decent amounts of sunshine which encouraged a few spectators.

The next event is this weekend at Hethel although, unfortunately, spectators aren't allowed. Sunday May 17th sees the club run its own event at Curborough sprint course near Lichfield and spectators are very welcome – better still it's free!
