Paint / re-painting

Recommended Posts

Whilst peeling a bit of gaffa tape off my car at Curborough, a rather large chunk of paint came off with it (approx 6x4cm!). My car's Audi Aluminium Silver. With all the chips and scratches the car's taken in it's 21,000 miles, I'm starting to feel rather sorry for it and as you can imagine, the sight of it's newest and largest war wound is really rather upsetting.

Loads of questions.

Anyone out there had their car repainted? Any good tips as to where to go? Can a good general car bodyshop paint a 7? Can a large area of missing paint like this be repainted on it's own or will it look blatently like a botched job? How much will it cost?

Any info would be great because I've gone into the garage twice now and stared miserably at the wound! I can't suture this one up!

Tough luck, Alex. One of the downsides of having a painted car rather than bare ali! At least you don't get wounded by the salt gremlins in the winter! Where abouts is the damage.... can't be covered by a tasteful sticker or similar I suppose? I would certainly try a goog quality body shop for advise or perhaps a specialist with 7 experience of repair work. Good luck.

And I thought you Doctors could fix anything!!

Sounds like a mesh repair job rather than a simple suture, Alex. Seriously though, when I had the sides of my car re-skinned (for a cycle wing conversion) I went to TSK paintshop in Erith, who are Caterham's painters. If anyone knows about painting sevens thay do. If it's not practical for you to use them, they may be useful for advice. They are on 01322 441604.

Alex

I spoke to Classic Carriages who gave good advice about respraying.

An alternative is to speak to Direct Auto Services (based in Newcastle Under Lyme). They cosmetically repair cars for the trade. They would be able to tell you if this form of repair is viable and cost effective. Tel 01782 719999 and ask for their Direct Auto Cosmetics Manager.
